Lucinda Literary NYC-based agency specializing in stories that change lives. Newsletters to keep you informed and workshops to transform your pitch.

Lucinda Literary, founded in 2011, is a literary management firm specializing in “ideas” or “big think” books that look to change the way people work, behave, and live. We also selectively represent fiction, seeking voice-driven, emotionally raw, and often unconventionally told novels for adults and young adults. In children’s books, we look for stories that transport us and break new ground, much

in the way our adult books do. Most often, our clients come to us already well-known in their fields as original thinkers or voices—they are business leaders, scientists, or bring a strong media or online profile. But sometimes, they bring just a great title concept. Or a great story that requires a professional writer. We help develop books from the ground up. Lucinda Literary also offers programs and services to help writers build their voice, platform, query letter, manuscripts, and proposals. You can find more information about our workshops and courses at www.lucindaliterary.com/workshops. Lucinda Literary’s Speakers Bureau was founded in 2016 to offer lecture opportunities and relationships to all Lucinda Literary authors, along with a select list of authors represented by our colleagues. Bringing a background in marketing, along with media and film relationships, we are above all strategists and advocates not just for the books, but for the entire careers of our authors. We take on a small number of new clients by design, which allows us to be hands-on, attentive, and editorially invested. Lucinda Literary also has a private Letter Better Facebook group, which is only accessible to those who have participated in one of our workshops, consultations, or courses. We do not accept membership requests from those who have not taken part in one of our programs.

How can you be sure your manuscript has the best shot of success— both at the writing and ex*****on level?

(While we’re sticking to just manuscripts for our purposes, this actually applies to any product you create. The strongest products have been iterated upon many times over.)

Every author has a different path to publishing—it’s the beauty of the business. And it’s filled with rejections and challenges along the way, which also lend to its ultimate reward.

In Lucinda’s brand new interview with Rachelle Bergstein, the author of Women From the Ankle Down, Brilliance and Fire, and most recently, The Genius of Judy, writers will hear firsthand Rachelle’s inspiring story from editorial assistant to journalist to an author published by major houses, complete with professional and personal challenges she could have never imagined.

A book pitch (or query letter) is a diagnostic tool that can point to the strengths and weaknesses in your idea and manuscript. In this way, marketing mirrors craft, and the two always go hand in hand. Often, writers wish to return and improve their manuscripts once they've buttoned up the pitch.

Writing a book is a long and involved, intellectually and emotionally challenging project, not for the faint of heart and nearly impossible to do alone!

At Lucinda Literary, we are so proud of and inspired by our first group of Accelerators, who are undertaking this effort: improving upon both how they write, and how they pitch, supporting one another in ways we couldn't have expected:

Dr. Aseem Desai

Dr Sumita Ambasta

Mary Judd
Dr Olivia Ong

Based on the progress and the breakthroughs we have seen in this first group of writers, we are excited to start teaching our second group (of fiction and memoir writers) next week! There’s just ONE more spot left for anyone interested in accelerating their book this summer!

Here’s a way to lose the pressure of needing to seem brilliant or witty with your social media posts. If you’re a professional, coach, speaker, teacher, therapist, think about the last time you had a conversation with a colleague or a client and received a reaction like “ah” or “oh!”

The reaction that indicated a point you made had really landed. Or think of something someone else told you, that resulted in a similar breakthrough.

That one line is exactly the thing you should post, as soon as the conversation ends, while it’s fresh in mind.

Even better: keep a list. These insights may become even better material for your book.

Waiting for Agent Responses? Here’s How to Stay Productive! You've poured your heart into creating the perfect book proposal or novel, and now it's out in the world, waiting for agent responses. The waiting game can be tough, but there are several productive activities you can engage in to make the most of this time.

🌟 Productive Activity #1: Focus on Your Online Presence When an agent receives your query, the first thing they'll do is look you up online.

Here's how to make sure they find impressive, substantial information about you:
Social Media: Build an active and engaging presence. For nonfiction authors, aim for at least 10,000 highly engaged followers on a single platform.

Personal Branding: Whether you're a journalist, blogger, or novelist, ensure your online presence reflects your work and personality. Create a Wikipedia page, encourage social media support from your fan base, and build a personal website to showcase your writing.

📚 Productive Activity #2: Read Comparable Titles Successful writers often share a strong conviction in their ideas. While waiting for agent responses, use this time to:

Research: Read comparable titles to gather inspiration and understand where your book fits in the marketplace.

Stay Updated: Follow publishing news outlets like Publishers Marketplace to spot trends that can support your book's timeliness and relevance.

⏳ Productive Activity #3: Be Patient and Stay Active Silence can be daunting, but it doesn't mean rejection.

While agents review your work:
Engage in Promotional Activities: Appear on local media, write posts for popular blogs or journals, secure blurbs for your book, and more. Query in Rounds: If you don't receive an offer on the first round, use feedback to improve and try again.

✉️ Productive Activity #4: Constructively Follow Up Timing and approach are crucial when following up with agents:
Check-In: 4 weeks is a good benchmark for a follow-up. Offer constructive updates like recent publications, media appearances, or relevant news that highlights the timeliness of your idea.

On the evening of July 10th at the Barnes & Noble in downtown Philadelphia I'll be giving an informal talk and Q&A about my book Get Signed, and how writers can crack the code of book publishing.

I'm even more excited to be in conversation with my new friend and inspiration, NYT bestselling memoirist Molly Roden Winter, who brings an incredible story of finding success as a first-time author with no platform to boast of—just a BIG idea, great writing, and a willingness to do the hard work.

What’s a Nonfiction Book Proposal?
A roadmap and marketing tool of about 50 pages that outlines your book’s concept, purpose, and potential audience. It’s crucial for grabbing the attention of agents and publishers.

💡 Top Tips for Crafting a Winning Proposal:

1. Start Strong with an Overview:
- Summarize your book’s main idea and why it matters now.
2. Showcase Your Bio:
- Highlight your expertise and what makes you the perfect person to write this book.
3. Include a Detailed Table of Contents:
- Give a clear structure of your book, showing its depth and breadth.
4. Write Compelling Chapter Summaries:
- Provide a sneak peek into each chapter to keep your reader hooked.
5. Research Comparative Titles:
- Show how your book fits into the market and what sets it apart.
6. Plan Your Marketing Strategy:
- Outline how you’ll reach your audience and what platforms you’ll use.
7. Add a Sample Chapter:
- Give a taste of your writing style and the book’s tone.

Why It Matters:
A strong book proposal not only presents your idea but also convinces agents and publishers of your book’s potential impact and marketability.

CINNAMON GIRL, the second Pacific Coast Highway Mystery has just RELEASED!

From the author of the acclaimed The Last Songbird, Lyft driver-turned-sleuth Adam Zantz returns in a neo-noir dive into the dark side of LA’s rock scene . . .

Cinnamon Girl is a cold case murder mystery that begins to spiral when amateur sleuth and failed songwriter Adam Zantz stumbles on a test pressing of a teenage garage band from the Paisley Underground.

“Cinnamon Girl is a musical joyride through the strange and deadly cul de sacs of Los Angeles. This book is effortlessly cool, delightfully weird, and wholly satisfying. I’d go anywhere with Weizmann at the wheel.” —NINA SIMON, New York Times bestselling author of Mother-Daughter Murder Night
