If they wanted to get back into the Netherworld, a meeting with Radoslav Krall was essential.
Lexi stood at his side. Big brown eyes met his, and for once, there was no joy or playfulness within her gaze.
Whatever Greggan had done to her had shifted her entire personality. He’d awakened the darkness within the once kind, loving creature who managed Wryn Castle.
She gave him little more than a nod, and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “So, we’re making deals with warlocks now,” she said, under her breath. “Brilliant.”
Radoslav was hosting a party that had nobility, royalty, celebrities, and moguls from all around the world. More guests arrived and walked past them to enter the opulent mansion.
Halston leaned in close. “Whatever it takes, right?”
She shrugged. “They haven’t caused any problems with my kind since the 50’s.”
“Oh, what happened then?”
“Well, let’s see. They took a few vamps and did some nasty experiments,” she said, and then met Halston’s eyes. “So, we raided one of their covens and separated their heads from their bodies. It was all quite dramatic, but we were making a point.”
She twirled the end of one of her curly locks, and flickered a look up to him. “So, I guess we’re about square now.”
He sucked in a breath and released it. Witches and warlocks weren’t something they dealt with. They were human, and therefore outside of the nephilim order, and safe from Netherworld Division scrutiny. But, now he wondered if there should be some regulation there.
He winced. That was no longer his business. Paranormal work was a thing of the past.
Old habits die hard.
Halston shook his head and reached out an arm. “Let’s hope so,” he said, and they linked arms.
They turned to enter the mansion. Bright lights awaited as they crossed under the archway and stepped into the wide foyer.
Directly inside, there were attendants taking coats.
Lexi shrugged off her mink, and handed it over, revealing a black dress laced with tiny crystals that reflected the light.
Inside, they were led to the back of the estate, through a wide corridor, and to what was a formal ball room. Scores of guests filled the room from wall to wall, chatting, dancing, enjoying the passed champagne and cocktails. There were too many scents to focus on one, and Lexi seemed to have the same issue.
“Dear me,” she said, and her eyes closed. She sniffed the air.
“Oh,” she said, licking the tip of one of her fangs. “Do tell me I can feast tonight.”
He shook his head, and gently pulled her along. “Not if we want to get out of here without a fight.”
Her eyes opened and she flashed a bright grin. “Oh, don’t threaten me with a good time, mate.”
He gave her a wink. “I’d rather not get blood on this suit,” he said, and she chuckled.
“Oh, I’ve always liked you, Halston,” she said. “You were never like the rest of them. And, I can see why Koa was so smitten. Handsome. Smart. Funny as hell.”
