Just barely visible thru the brush is the base foundation of one on WTIC's original towers in Avon, c. 1929. Note the remains of a spotlight that was used to illuminate the adjacent tower. The two towers, approx 200' in height, supported a T cage antenna utilized with TIC's 1st 50,000 watt transmitter.

Tomorrow on Spotlight CT, as we continue our anniversary series "The Broadcaster at 100," we're going to focus on an often overlooked chapter from our past: the nearly 17-year era when our founders, The Travelers Insurance Company, ran not only WTIC Radio but also the original WTIC Television, Channel 3. Former producer Jim Stewart is going to explain how the radio division acted as a "big brother" to the fledgling TV station the Travelers founded in 1957. NOTE: it was during this era our signature Broadcaster statue debuted! Tune in tomorrow at 2pm on your radio, your smart speaker and the FREE Audacy app.

Sadly, we have lost yet another member of the Hartford radio family. "Country" Paul Payton died on Monday, October 23, 2023 at his home in NJ, following a battle with cancer. Per his wishes, there will be no funeral, but a celebration of his life will take place in the future.

Should you wish to make a donation in his memory, you can direct it to either the Connecticut Electric Railway Association (a/k/a the CT Trolley Museum) in East Windsor, CT, or the Railway Museum of New England in Thomaston, CT.

John Ramsey adds:
Paul was significantly involved with Hartford radio back in the 70s and 80s starting out at WWUH and also working at WCCC and WDRC-FM among other stations.

He had an amazing voice, was a great musician and a wonderful man. Our thoughts go out to his family.
