On April 23rd, 1954, a counterattack on the position Huguette 1 was planned. 2e BEP was assigned to carry the attack with 380 men led by Major Liesenfelt. After the heavy french artillery barrage though the attack was delayed and this gave the Viet Mihn forces precious time to reorganize e prepare for the assault. When this was launched by two companies of the 2e BEP from Opèra position they suffered 80% of casualties. Major Liesenfelt called for reinforcements but nobody answered. A second attack by other two companies was repulsed and Lt. Colonel Bigeard (6e BCP) called off the assault. With this order the three Huguette positions(7,6,1) were definetelly lost and 2e BEP was dissolved due to heavy losses.

After the end of Second World War the French Army adopted the copy of the German Splinter camouflage, producing shelters that were highly used during the Indochina war. From this original scheme they also produced some less common variants with different colors, eventually to be replaced in 1951 by the famous Lizard camo. Althrough this camo is more common to see in Algeria war sometimes some camo Splinter cap have been seen in use by some NCOs like in this case.

Suddenly the FM gunner spots movements a few hundred meters from the outpost and the men position themselves on alert. They do not immediately open fire given the uncertainty of the identity of the contacts and the risk of causing collateral damage. Meanwhile, the team leader reports to command via radio and asks for orders.

The patrol manage to reach the arrival point without encountering hostility and the soldiers establishes a small observation post. They take the opportunity to relax by smoking a cigarette. Meanwhile, the squad leader prepares a Berber tea for everyone, ideals after a long and cold march. He also has the opportunity to show his djellaba. This tunic was locally purchased and it wasn't only used to keep warm. Many times the commandos forces used it to conduct infiltrations operations in the the FLN ranks

The patrol sets off. The arrival point is not distant but the road is open and with few covers. For this reason the squad leader makes the men stop to observe and listen for any suspicious movements and noises.
