For Lum 07, Sandy Rodriguez and Sarah Rosalena opened up about their intersecting art practices. They discuss how their research-based work recovers knowledge from the past and present—and how by creating maps with materials and techniques of the Americas, such as weaving, beading and painting—they are able to portray distinct aspects of histories of resistance.

Border Crossings opens tonight at the . "War, inequality and injustice shaped 20th century performance art. The exhibition rests on the idea that the immigrant, the asylum seeker, the exiled artist, shaped the language of dance modernism. The act of crossing borders, the nature of exile, initiated aesthetic philosophies which translated into choreography.” —curator Ninotchka Bennahum

Pecos Pryor and James Hapke — tonight and tomorrow at . They'll be showing and selling new work from this summer and spring that includes sculpture, print, drawing, textiles and ceramics. With on Friday.

"Our practices have been directly and indirectly in conversation and collaboration for years and we are excited to show our work together. In the spirit of our parallel disciplines we are working to establish a new studio that will function as both our own workshop, and a space for public events. The proceeds raised at this show will all go towards this endeavor."

Pecos is an artist and educator living in Carpinteria Ca. He holds an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he began work that investigates and enacts a visualized passage of time. More recently he has built a body of work that explores the transformation of grief through the form and symbol of the traffic cone.

James Hapke lives and works in Ventura, Ca. He holds and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he studied printmedia and ceramics and was awarded the Roads Grant to investigate, celebrate and study vernacular artists across the midwest and north east. He recently began making quilts to explore dream logic and softer sculpture.

Pecos and James share a deep love of printmaking, Dwight Yoakam, and the ocean.

An anti-disciplinary artist and environmental scientist, Cameron Patricia Downey creates in a "language of epics out of minutiae" — of the Blues, of Black survival art — shaped in precarious and fantastical sculptures made up of everyday objects of personal or collective importance.

There's still time to plan the weekend around Orchid Blues: Cameron Patricia Downey opening at Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara this Sunday (noon–4pm) with an artist reception. Photos by Ingrid Bostrom Photography

"Portals is a solo exhibition that brings together various works from three different threads of Sommer Roman’s larger body of work: new textile-based wall sculptures and “Brain Scan” colored pencil drawings are paired with “Cell Portrait” ink drawings. This grouping of work sheds light on themes and forms that appear and reappear in Roman’s work repeatedly: namely, the biological cross-section and the circle."

Please join us tomorrow (Sunday 4/16, 12–4) for the opening of Sarah Rosalena: Pointing Star at . We are proud to show , a pioneer in computational craft, as the museum’s first solo show since it’s reopening.

Pointing Star is a series of textiles and ceramics that refigure eight-pointed star motifs used across Turtle Island — here in Wixárika patterns — as a template
for weaving images of stars. Works are viewed as hybrid forms, both created by hand and programmed software. As the title suggests, the star motif is not an axis or compass star, but rather an entrance into the boundless, which contains all conceivable and inconceivable directions at once. The design points in all directions, representing the entirety of the Universe beyond measurement and borders. The woven textiles, ceramics, and beadwork point to the infinite as glitch, generating new possibilities for geospatial edges.

Join us for an artist talk with Alberto Lule, LUM Art Prize winner — Wednesday, March 15, 4pm, .

Lule’s work, much of which is handled with a careful beauty, is a rare gut punch — powerful, residing in the artist’s humanity — and frightful, drawing out the inhumanity of the incarcerated body.

Lule was incarcerated for 15 years after his arrest as a teenager in Santa Barbara County, where he grew up. He was featured as the art prize winner in no. 06, in a profile by .p.cruz, with the support of

“Beta Epochs is an unapologetically unpolished, collaborative adventure. Organized aspirationally in the lineage of basement punk shows and unsanctioned raves, this exhibition brings together work from close to thirty artists in a 4,200-square-foot warehouse situated between downtown Los Angeles and Echo Park Lake.”
