Their first choice for a name was Carnival Records, under which they released two singles before discovering another label had taken the Carnival name first. From 1966 to 1999, the company's headquarters were on the grounds of the historic Charlie Chaplin Studios at 1416 North La Brea Avenue, near Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. The label has been home to some of the most influential artists of the
last 50 years, with numerous success stories in each of the last five decades. The success of Herb Alpert’s own Tijuana Brass and Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 in the 60s gave way to a more diversified roster in the 70s including The Carpenters, Joe Cocker, Peter Frampton, The Police and Cat Stevens. A&M successes in the 80s and 90s included Sting, Janet Jackson, Amy Grant, Sheryl Crow and Soundgarden, to name just a few, while contemporary artists such as The Black Eyed Peas and Maroon 5 keep the A&M brand shining brightly in current times.
2012 marks the 50th Anniversary of the label and throughout the year, we will be celebrating this milestone with everything from brand new interview clips with some of the artists and execs who shaped the label to new releases, contests, polls, playlists and much more. Celebrate this landmark label with us!
