One of the tracks I’m most proud of from a songwriting perspective is ironically one of the most underperforming of the entire ESA discography, at least from a sales and streaming standpoint.

Sometimes just because a track means something to an artist, it doesn’t always necessarily mean it’s going to communicate as well to the audience.

But even when listening back to it seven years later, it still hits all the same spots it did back in 2017 when I wrote it alongside Valeriia Bielokosova and I’m still hugely proud of making something that to me, feels like nothing else I’ve heard.

‘The Release’ is probably as close to Neo-Folk as ESA is ever going to get and with so much input from Valeriia, is absolutely slathered in a Ukrainian folk like flavour.

I’m not sure where Valeriia is these days. The last I heard was that she had re-domesticated in China with her band and performing on a corporate level. But I’ll never be able to thank her enough for inspiring me to write something so dense.
