Mount Athos is a peninsula in northeastern Greece, which has been central to Eastern Orthodox monasticism for over a millennium. There, isolated from conventional time as well as global events, live about 2,000 monks, dedicating themselves to prayer and worship. Resonating across the Aegean Sea, their sacred songs have been heard only by visiting pilgrims.

Iso Toxyl’s EP 'Zero zero' has recently been re-uploaded to music platforms after a brief hiatus. The EP brings together the best of metal, alternative rock and hip hop to deliver a distinctive sound that steps away from her previous releases with a more mature and developed style.

Filled with a raw energy that bounds from the first song until the last, in her own words, “Zero zero is mainly about defence mechanisms, hardship and the psychological effects they may cause”. “I’ve written these songs while trapped in a terribly toxic relationship which gave me a lot of insight on myself and psychology in general; I tend to analyze and overthink a lot, which definitely helped me out of tricky situations”.

Her vocals, at moments aggressive and at moments softer, are also a reflection of this life experience, confronting a catharsis filled with underlying layers of rage, self doubt, lack of control and ultimately resilience.

Within nearly a decade, Bogotá-based outfit Romperayo have moulded an eclectic take on their local cumbia music, infusing it with psychedelia and humour, twisting it with raunchy synthesisers and an accordion.

When we reached Pedro Ojeda, the band’s drummer and lead, Romperayo were in the midst of a busy touring schedule around Mexico. Instead of comprehensive notes on the sounds that shaped them, Pedro chose to share a comprehensive list of music, reassuring us that each and every single one of these songs were very important influences in achieving the sound of Romperayo. Listening to them, the connections become obvious.

Rompareyo are playing Le Guess Who? 2022 on Saturday, 23:00 - 23:00 at EKKO as part of the Coco María presents Club Coco selection.

We’re happy to see a new APOCALIPSIS] release by Colombian-American composer, producer, and DJ

His EP, Sonoras, is a meditation on channeled chaos, inviting a return to intuitive movement both as a creator and as a listener. It promises constantly-evolving soundscapes that shapeshift between pitched vocal performances, drum breaks, and multi-layered diasporic references.

“Juego de Cambios” (“Game of Changes”), referencing the ancient Chinese divination text I Ching, enters a collision point between chance, fate, free will, determinism, disarray, and order under reverberations of a Korg Minilogue synthesizer. “Dale Diente” (“Give it a bite”) merges mutant accordion melodies, sub bass, and staccato-like drums for industrial-leaning storytelling.

“Siglo Acelerado” (“Accelerated Century”) enters digital hyperspeed territory, exploring younger generations’ experience of the exponential speed of tech development and media consumption. “Alegria” (“Joy”), features a vocal performance and co-writing duties by Silas Alesa. The culminating track offers world-making that investigates the extreme yet interconnected states of death and ecstatic happiness, bridging cumbia ballads and trance influences.

Sebastian Maria’s work draws upon diverse influences including música urbana, reggaeton, musique concrète, chance operations, and field recordings– celebrating and signaling a debt to diasporic memory while remaining individual in calculation.

Tio is a singer/songwriter from Ambrym island in Vanuatu who grew up immersed in local practices, customs and stories handed down through generations. His first interest in music was born from his early encounters with the traditional ‘tam tam’ (a wooden slit-drum) and songs in his language, Daakaka.

Whilst living in Vanuatu’s capital Port Vila, Tio got involved with the local reggae and roots music scene, while he also collaborated with a broad range of artists from across the Pacific, Australia, Africa and Europe including members of Airileke, Blue King Brown, Kalja Riddim Klan, Simangavole, Kaumaakonga, Impossible Odds, Hermann Hartel, Natano Pasifika, Rize of the Morning Star, Tabura and Black Rose.

A talented multi-instrumentalist, Tio switches between violin, ukulele, guitar, tam tam, djembe and bush bass. He is driven by his passion to mix traditional and contemporary beats and styles and share his traditions with other musicians. In Vanuatu, he is passionate about encouraging Ni-Vanuatu youth to use local instruments and create music based on their unique cultural rhythms and mother tongues.

While we recover in between music festivals, this week we listen to the magical healing soul of Witch Prophet, a Canada-based East African singer-songwriter whose 2020 sophomore LP “D.N.A Activation” has been on heavy rotation at many of our team’s home offices.

Co-produced alongside her partner and DJ SUN SUN, the critically acclaimed “D.N.A Activation” explores Witch Prophet’s Ethiopian and Eritrean roots fusing jazz, hip-hop, soul and RnB with songs in English, Amharic, and Tigrinya. Each song bears the name of a family member, while she also explores depth and connection in creating music as a portal for self-growth and discovery, as she navigates and better understands her cultural and q***r identity.

Check out the powerful and comforting music video for "Tesfay", inspired by the memory of her late grandfather at the link in our bio and follow Witch Prophet for more refreshing soundscapes.

Neggy Gemmy's (FKA Negative Gemini) heartfelt electronic pop is built
around duality. In astrology, Geminis represent polarity and though
Lindsey French—the producer, singer, and songwriter behind the name—is
an upbeat Sagittarius, her music has always been linked to that idea.
The Los Angeles-based artist delivers sparkling vocal hooks alongside
angst-ridden missives, and floating atmospherics with chest-caving
bass. She’s constantly swerving and shapeshifting as her interests and
surroundings change: no two releases are quite alike, yet within all
of their DNA lies a magnetic songwriting sensibility that makes you
want to sing, chant, and scream along with her.

In order to match everyone's current mood we share her latest single,
‘Beep Beep’, which is the second single to drop from her long awaited
LP. It’s a fierce soundtrack to tearing up the LA highway system.
Confident and distorted lyric strust over bouncy house chorts, fizzy
bubbles and punchy brass section reminiscent of the early 00’s dance
pop Neggy Gemmy was raised on.
