Huddled between the soaring Balkan Mountain massif and the lower, smoother curves of the Sredna Gora ridge, rose fields stretch out far into the distance. The unique microclimate of this pristine valley provides ideal conditions for the Rosa Damascena – the Rose of Damascus – an ode to its probable origins. In the late spring, the harvest begins, producing one of Bulgaria's most precious commodities: rose essential oil, known as "otto" or "attar".
In the new issue, Jodi Hilton and Martin Dimitrov head into the Rose Valley to investigate how Bulgaria built a powerful national symbol around the rose – and why it might lose it.

Stories and photographs on the issues shaping the future of Europe
Point.51 is a magazine of original photography long-form journalism about the issues shaping the future of Europe. We are a proudly independent slow-journalism magazine, produced by a team of journalists and photographers based across the continent.
Find out more about our latest issues below, or by visiting the website. You can get a print copy of the magazine from a range of stockists worldwide or directly from us here.
Our first issue was the product of more than a year of planning, researching, interviewing, reporting and photographing. Inside, we follow the asylum seekers searching for sanctuary and the ordinary citizens living in the towns and communities caught up in the largest mass movement of people to and across Europe since World War II.
We learn about why some Cuban asylum seekers are now arriving in Serbia, as entry to the United States has become more difficult; and about what happened in La Roya on the French-Italian border after the Paris Attacks. We spend time in Calais, known to most as the former site of the “Jungle”, as it attempts to rebuild a troubled tourism industry; and newly-arrived asylum seekers share their experiences as they adjust to British society. We also hear from those who call Ireland home, while having a dual sense of national identity; and we visit Istanbul as record snowfall brought the city to a stop.
In our second issue, we get to grips with Britain at a time of unprecedented global attention. Across 152 pages, the stories and photographs inside stretch across the UK, throwing light on how Britain got to where it is today – and where it might be heading in the future.
In London, with time running out, we meet the changemakers at the forefront of the new wave of climate activism as the future of the planet competes with Brexit for political attention. We journey to Scotland, where we meet the man who stole a symbolic stone from Westminster Abbey in 1950 in the name of Scottish nationalism, sparking a nation-wide manhunt. And we head to Port Talbot in Wales, one of Britain’s last surviving steel towns, to meet the people determined to see it reinvented.
Across the Irish Sea, we travel to Dublin and Belfast – and the towns in between – to talk to people on both sides of a contentious border. We travel to the exact locations of some of the most important events in Britain’s modern history, seeing them as they are today. In Bulgaria, we meet some of the British immigrants who have made one of the EU’s poorest member states their home. Finally, we head to Albania, a country hoping to join the EU as Britain prepares to leave, challenging the idea that geography alone can make one “European”.
Please support our work by ordering a print copy of the magazine. You can get it from a range of stockists worldwide, or directly from us here. Each issue costs £12, or you can get issues one and two together for £20. Shipping within the United Kingdom is free.
