One of the replica posters I'll be doing for the Legends Reunion is a card I got to see live at the Coliseum. (Billy vs. Dory kind of sticks out like a sore thumb with that lineup, doesn't it?) They are based on the ads that ran in the Evansville Sunday paper until the mid-80s reformatting (and probably a subsequent hike in ad rates).

So close to having the draft ready for editing I can taste it.

Chipping away at 1969 and it finally occurred to me why this book has been like pulling teeth at times. The first three books have all had themes that came through and guided the overall story.

1959 - Rip Hawk revives Leon Balkin’s promotion
1960 - Leon’s success leads to the Indy office wanting a piece of the pie.
The Sixties Part 1 - The Ousting of Leon and the chaos that followed. Plus the Owensboro connection.

That chaos is a big part of why this book has been difficult at times. The business locally from 1963 to 1969 was the very definition of “fits and starts.” As a result it’s multiple stories rather than an overall narrative. It’s the end of an era and a preview of things to come. It’s dead periods and flurries of activity. It’s local politics creating a butterfly effect on who wrestles where. It’s a period I could’ve skipped to get into the Jarrett years, but there’s so much that foreshadows what came in the 1970s it needs to be covered.

Now I just need to put it to bed.
