: the best babysitter ever.
We knew each another away from sports, before even he was a Post-Gazette colleague. Tennis partner (competitive). Visited each other’s homes (he had 75 ties! the sport coats!). That relationship is how he came to help babysit our youngest.
But a man that giving and public — Butch to Guy’s Sundance (a TV run longer than Gunsmoke, he proudly noted), the soothing voice to a sports-mad region, everybody’s bud from living room to car radio to porch to press box — his is a loss shared by millions.
So good, so warm, such multiple roles to so many. Mensch and mentor. Interviewer and interlocutor. Sports conscience and counsel. Co-host and partner. Husband and brother. This leaves holes all over his adopted city, which adopted him right back. A Cleveland guy leaves us as a part of Pittsburghese: Stan’nGuy.
