👏🏾Celebrating Habibata Ouarme 👏🏾

Habibata's journey began in the Ivory Coast, where at a young age, she underwent the devastating practice of female ge***al mutilation (FGM). FGM, a harmful cultural tradition that involves the partial or total removal of external female ge***alia, has long-lasting physical and psychological effects on its survivors.

Determined to shed light on the long-term devastating effects of FGM, Habibata became a passionate advocate and filmmaker. Her journey led her to Canada, where she continued her mission to raise awareness about FGM and empower survivors.

Habibata's advocacy took a cinematic form with her documentary, "Koromousso (Big Sister)." This powerful film delves into the lives of FGM survivors, offering a poignant and intimate exploration of their experiences and struggles. Premiering at the 2023 Human Rights Watch Film Festival in Toronto, "Koromousso (Big Sister)" resonated with audiences worldwide, sparking important conversations and shedding light on the urgent need to end FGM.

Currently, Habibata is working on her next project, "1001 Crowns for My Head," a film exploring African heritage and identity through hairstyles. The film has received financing through Telefilm Canada, furthering her mission to amplify marginalized voices and stories.

Habibata's resilience, compassion, and dedication serve as an inspiration to us all.

A bill proposed by New Brunswick Liberal MP René Arseneault aimed to make the oath of allegiance to King Charles optional for Canadian MPs and senators. However, a cross-partisan group of MPs, including most Liberals, Conservatives, and the Prime Minister's cabinet, voted against it, resulting in the bill's defeat. This maintains the requirement for parliamentarians to swear allegiance to the reigning monarch, as outlined in Canada's Constitution.

Supporters of King Charles enthusiastically celebrated the bill's defeat by singing 'God Save the King' in the House of Commons. Monarchists see this as a victory for preserving Canada's longstanding connection to the monarchy, while republicans welcomed the bill as a step toward eliminating what they see as an outdated institution.

Despite divided public opinion on the monarchy, it's unlikely that Canada will sever ties with the Crown soon due to the constitutional requirement of unanimity among provinces, territories, and the federal government.

Saskatchewan RCMP Launches Mandatory Breathalyzer Program 🚔

In a proactive effort to combat impaired driving and enhance road safety, Saskatchewan RCMP has introduced a new campaign mandating breathalyzer tests at every traffic stop within their jurisdiction. This initiative, rooted in amendments to The Criminal Code, aims to deter impaired driving and foster safer driving habits among all motorists. While drivers are obliged to comply with the breathalyzer test upon request, there are concerns surrounding privacy rights. Nevertheless, this move underscores a determined approach to addressing a critical issue on our roads.

There is a lot of back and forth about this, but let me put it to you.

What’s your stance on Saskatchewan RCMP’s mandatory breathalyzer testing at all traffic stops, regardless of suspicion?

The Gambian parliament has voted on advancing a bill to lift the ban on female ge***al mutilation (FGM). The vote saw 42 in favor and 4 against, supporting the bill's aim to repeal the 2015 ban, which previously carried a penalty of up to three years in prison for perpetrators. Could someone please explain how a simple veggie or fruit platter is priced at $44.99 when you can probably get a whole basket of fruits or veggies for the same amount? The irony of the 'New lower price' sticker truly baffles me. Metro stores are primarily in Ontario and Quebec, and in my neck of the woods, I've never encountered such exorbitant prices.

However, I've noticed that even items like half a watermelon are priced ridiculously compared to buying a whole one. What exactly are we paying for, and where's the logic in these pricing strategies?

Notice that there is not even a dip in the platter... LOL, so we can't even claim that is what is causing the exorbitant price of the platter. 📹:

Here is the gist

Approximately 3,000 academic workers at York University, including contract instructors, teaching assistants, and graduate assistants, have initiated a strike. The strike began after the union representing them, CUPE 3903, and the university failed to reach a new collective agreement.

The strike officially started after midnight following the expiration of a strike deadline. Picket lines were set up across the campus, with a rally scheduled later on.

The main issues leading to the strike are concerns regarding wages and job stability. Academic workers argue that their wages do not adequately reflect the cost of living in Toronto and are advocating for increased job stability, particularly for teaching and graduate assistants.

The strike affects various stakeholders, including academic workers, students, and the university administration. Academic workers are withholding their labor to pressure the university into addressing their concerns.

Do you think YorkU experiences more labor disruptions than other universities?

19/02/2024

Consumers should check the specific lot-code information on the CFIA website to determine if their eggs are part of the recall. While healthy individuals may only experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, vulnerable groups such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious, potentially life-threatening infections.

It’s essential for consumers to take note of the recall notices and dispose of or return the recalled eggs to the point of purchase for a refund. Moreover, implementing proper food handling and cooking techniques can help minimize the risk of salmonella contamination and ensure food safety.

📢 What You Need to Know: Bell Media Layoffs & Radio Station Sales

Bell Media, a major Canadian media company, has announced layoffs affecting approximately 4,800 employees, about nine percent of its workforce.

The company plans to sell 45 of its 103 regional radio stations located in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada.

Bell Media cited financial difficulties, including operating losses in its news division, as reasons for the layoffs and station sales.

Federal and provincial politicians criticized Bell Media for its decision, accusing the company of undermining local journalism despite receiving regulatory relief. Despite saving approximately $40 million per year from the government's Online Streaming Act, Bell Media faces scrutiny for not investing in news and local journalism.

Bell Media blamed regulators for the layoffs and station sales, citing slow responses to industry challenges.

The layoffs and station sales raise concerns about the future of local news coverage and the vitality of media outlets in affected communities.

When Autocorrect strikes, a Canadian Pizza Hut in Timmins, Ontario, inadvertently announced the closure of its dining room due to “unforeseen circumcisions” instead of “circumstances.” This amusing typo quickly went viral, eliciting widespread laughter on social media. Pizza Hut responded with good humor, reassuring customers that they only cut pizza, not anything else. The general manager attributed the typo to autocorrect and embraced the situation by offering a new special deal and stating that “no tip is required.” Even the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation joined in on the fun, humorously suggesting that Pizza Hut stick to making pizzas while they handle circumcisions.

05/02/2024

The Canadian government has extended the ban on foreign nationals and companies buying residential properties in Canada until 2027. The ban, initially implemented last year and set to expire in 2025, aims to address housing affordability concerns.

Foreign commercial enterprises and individuals who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents are affected, with some exceptions. Violators may face fines and property sale orders. The extension acknowledges that housing challenges persist beyond 2024, and the government seeks more data on the ban’s impact.

It’s part of a broader strategy that includes tax removal on new rentals and funding for housing initiatives. While its effectiveness is debated, the government views it as one tool in addressing housing affordability and preventing speculative investment.

Would keeping Foreigners Out of Housing Market Until 2027 really solve the housing crisis problem?

01/02/2024

The City of Regina has announced an expansion of its Red Light Safety Program to include monitoring rolling right turns on red lights at specific intersections. The aim is to enhance safety by ensuring drivers come to a complete stop before executing a right turn on red lights. This measure is intended to mitigate risks for pedestrians and cyclists and reduce collisions associated with right turns.

The program will initially issue warning notices starting February 1 at three designated camera locations: Albert Street and Saskatchewan Drive, Albert Street and Parliament Avenue, and Dewdney Avenue and Lewvan Drive. Full enforcement, with penalties of $230, will commence on April 1 for violators.

The announcement coincides with a concerted effort to address pedestrian-vehicle collisions, which resulted in fatalities in the previous year.

The Red Light Safety Program has been credited with reducing collisions at monitored intersections, as indicated by an evaluation report from SGI. To complement the enforcement measures, the City of Regina and Regina Police Service plan to launch an education campaign aimed at raising awareness and promoting responsible driving behavior.

Health Minister Mark Holland has announced that Canada is not ready to expand eligibility for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to individuals with mental illness as their sole medical condition. This decision follows the release of a joint parliamentary committee report, which highlighted unresolved issues surrounding the proposed expansion. The government intends to table a response to the report, seeking additional time to address concerns before moving forward with any changes. Despite the upcoming March 17 deadline, Minister Holland emphasized the importance of thorough consideration and readiness. Feedback from healthcare professionals suggests that the system is not adequately prepared to implement the proposed expansion.
