Exciting news for women in law! 📢 Justice Sarah Huggett has just been appointed as the Chief Judge of the NSW District Court, making history as the first woman in this role. You may recall from episode 3 ‘Girl Boss or Bossy Girl: Women in the Workplace’ like many industries, the legal profession is plagued with gender based issues, including women not being adequately promoted to judicial positions.
Justice Huggett continues to break down gender barriers. Throughout her career, in addition to being an incredible lawyer all-round, she’s dedicated herself to improving the experiences of women, children, and Indigenous people within the legal system. Since being called to the NSW bar in 2001, Justice Huggett has presided over complex cases including the carnal knowledge trial of Chris Dawson. She has played a pivotal role in various sexual assault cases, such as the Golossian and Mason trials. Her honour has also served as a member of the NSW Sexual Assault Review Committee and contributed to the NSW Bar Association Criminal Law Committee, her honour’s impact has been undeniable. Witnessing remarkable individuals like Justice Huggett rightfully assume leadership positions is inspiring, especially when they help to shatter the glass ceiling.
