🟠| How Akwa Ibom State was Formed

Before 1987, Akwa Ibom was an eye sore, more like a deserted area with small villages and dusty roads. Education and healthcare were limited as well.

The first struggle to create Akwaibom State was in 1983 during the administration of Gowon. Sadly, it ended in futile efforts.

However, eleven years later, on September 23, 1987, during the General Ibrahim Babangida's military administration, Crossriver State was divided, giving birth to Akwa Ibom.

Fast-forward to today, the state that started off as a baby inside a cradle has grown so massively and spread its wings of goodness within and outside the state.

Proudly, Akwaibom is standing tall as Nigeria's highest oil and gas-producing state, with a thriving economy and a population of nearly 5.5 million.

As our former Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, would say, "It can only be God."

Akwa Ibom State has risen from zero to being the hero of uncommon transformation.

Happy 37th Birthday, Akwa Ibom State - The Land of Promise!

The famous Aba Women Riot (Ekong Iban) of 1929 originated from a market called Ukam Market in Ikot Abasi.

The riot was organized by the rural women and led by Madam Udo Udoma, a woman leader from Ikot Abasi, and encompassed women from different ethnic groups.

It was the first major revolt by women in West Africa, and led against the Warrant Chiefs, whom they accused of restricting the role of women in the government.
