So last night during my stream someone asked how I choose my tracks as they were struggling with sets and feeling overwhelmed.

After a moment of thought and heavily under the influence of gin, I paused the music and delivered an impromptu TED talk lol
I'm posting it here because some might find it useful, at the very least it might spark discussion

TLDR; Find what works for you, play to your strengths and I shouldn't get tipsy on stream

I give a little advice whilst heavily under the influence of gin

Since the subject of producers using engineers has come up again, I'm gonna chip my 2p's worth in.

It seems virtually every producer has used an engineer in some capacity. Looking through some of the vinyl, Guy is listed as engineered some of Lee Haslams stuff. Mik Cree is listed as engineering Paul Glazby's remix of Dreams. Tidy Boys did loads for other Tidy artists as has Paul Janes. The issue seems to be down to how much the engineer is doing and whether the artist is being honest about using them.

I've used engineers in the past to varying degrees. Early days it was because I needed a lot of help getting a track up to scratch. From parts not being in key to the fact I'd EQ'd the F out the bass and couldn't work out why there was none! (I can't think Martin "MSeries" Harrison enough for persevering with me in my early days!) I've also worked with an engineer for when I've had an idea but it's completely out my wheel house so I've enlisted them because I know they've got experience in that style (Paul Clark comes to mind for "Your Call" & "Whatever It Takes") and it became a fantastic learning experience. It's why I'm working with Digital Mafia at the weekend. Sometimes I work with an engineer simply because I love their stuff and just want to work with them. Recently though it's been all my own work, but I'm only here because of the Tidy Course and the knowledge/experience I've picked up from working with engineers.

The questions though that have essentially been posed seem to be around whether it is actually the artists work & does it give them an unfair advantage in getting other opportunities. In my case, the first one is something I've often discussed with the engineers themselves; at what stage does it stop being a Grazer J track and become theirs? It's a fine line I am mindful of. As for the 2nd one, well a quick glance at my diary of 0 bookings so far this year would suggest not; but then I am just a sample size of 1.

None of this is saying that any of the concerns raised by those questioning the use of engineers are invalid. The concept of taking credit and gaining success off other peoples work is abhorrent to us, especially in the art/creative space and definitely when people who do all their own work get overlooked by such people. There will always be people who don't want to put any effort in; they simply want to pay money and take the credit and there will always be those quite happy to take their money. That's why ghost writing is a thing.

There's a load more rabbit holes we can go down; What's the real reason why people are questioning success of others? Aren't you taking credit for others work if you're not creating your own sounds?

For me, using engineers are a fantastic way to learn and I've often suggested people use them if they have an idea but don't know how to execute it (and they also have the money) If you get a little bit of success from the result then bonus. I'm going to keep using them when I feel necessary and keep ensuring they get credited for their work (no matter how much they stress they're not bothered)
