Quick announcement that our next album, an incredible free jazz trio of Andrew Barker (drums), William Parker (bass), and Jon Irabagon (reeds) is now up for pre-order (link in the comments). Bakunawa (OOYH 030) releases Friday August 30 on digital + LP.

Andrew Barker and Jon Irabagon have played duo many times (and documented it), and Barker has a long history playing with William Parker as a member of the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra. But this is a first meeting for Irabagon and Parker, and it is a magical session. This is the one and only time they’ve played together, and we’re so glad tape was rolling! The title track is up now on Bandcamp-only for you to check out.

This one also has some incredible original artwork and design by TJ Huff. The vinyl test cuts sound amazing, so if you want a great combination of awesome sounding music with great LP art, we’re biased but highly recommend this one. As with our last few LPs, this one has some special surprises coming your way. We’ll have much more soon, stay tuned!

Surprise digital EP drop today out TODAY only on Bandcamp (and streaming soon)! The new trio of Mali Obomsawin (bass, vocals), Magdalena Abrego (electric guitar), and Allison Burik (bass clarinet, alto saxophone) are planning an active touring schedule over the next year, and Live Sketches (OOYH EP001) is a preview of what’s to come. Live Sketches is a two-track EP featuring two songs from Mali Obomsawin’s internationally acclaimed 2022 debut Sweet Tooth (OOYH 017), deconstructed and reimagined live. Check it out on Bandcamp (link in comments), available for download and both tracks are streaming. Chicago, the B-side single from ChristopherHoffman - Vision Is The Identity is OUT NOW! You can stream it anywhere via the link in the comments, and it is also the featured track on the Vision Bandcamp page. Also today is Chris’ birthday and all he wants is for you to listen to him absolutely shred a cello solo with Frank Locrasto and Bill Campbell on Chicago. This was originally written as a solo piece for Tomeka Reid’s Chicago String Summit, but Chris always imagined it as this full band version. Chris did the cover/design for the single.

We have a few limited Vision reaper hoodies left, and when they’re gone they are gone. Check them out on Bandcamp, and if you get one people are sure stop you on the street and ask what’s up with that cool hoodie.

Limited Wax Mage JAWBREAKER vinyl for Kenny Warren - Sweet World (OOYH 028) will go up for sale at 1pm EST on Tuesday July 2. The pictures speak for themselves, but Wax Mage Records absolutely crushed this one! The colors are incredible, and match the album cover by TJ Huff perfectly. We’ve had a lot of people reach out about these already, so they are likely to go fast (we’re keeping one, so there will be 24 out in the world). They’ll hit Bandcamp at 1pm EST on 7/2 and are $75 + shipping. We’ll also have some test pressings coming soon signed by the trio, stay tuned for announcements regarding that. Release day! We are so pumped to finally be releasing the debut album from Alfredo Colón, Blood Burden (OOYH 029)! Coló is a saxophonist we’ve been hearing about for years, from associations with Henry Threadgill and William Parker, as the latest addition to Amirtha Kidambi’s Elder Ones, and recently appearing on EWI on Christopher Hoffman - Vision Is The Identity (OOYH 026). Blood Burden features Colón with his quartet of Lex Korten, Steve Williams, and Connor Parks, navigating 8 tracks of modern jazz in the vein of Ambrose Akinmusire, Darius Jones, Henry Threadgill, David Binney, Kenny Garrett, and Miguel Zenón, but introduces Colón as a totally original new voice on the alto saxophone. Tomorrow (Weds 6/12) at The Basement in Richmond, the incredible Nicole M. Mitchell joins Noah Campbell, Scott Clark, and Adam Hopkins in a first-time quartet!

SURPRISE: Very special vinyl coming your way this Summer! The reception for Nick Dunston - COLLA VOCE (OOYH 027) has been incredible, and thanks to so many people for already picking it up. We’ve gotten a lot of requests for this on LP so Nick did something extra cool with it, detailed below. Up for pre-order now (link in comments), shipping in August!

Limited (500) 12” black vinyl LP of Nick Dunston - COLLA VOCE: Praylewd (OOYH 027), featuring original artwork by TJ Huff. For this very special vinyl edition, Nick remixed the material from COLLA VOCE into two 15-minute sides, and as of now these tracks are ONLY available as an LP and will not be released digitally (TJ also chopped up the COLLA VOCE art into something extra awesome for the LP). Nick made the two long-form electronic tracks using samples from the album, but sees it as a non-linear introduction and/or followup to COLLA VOCE. Both LP track titles (Side A: Phoenix, Side B: Ouroboros) are based on mythical figures that represent time/life/death as cyclical rather than linear. LPs are in production and will ship in August 2024.

We are so incredibly excited to be releasing NYC-based trumpeter/composer Kenny Warren - Sweet World (OOYH 028) today, an album that has been in the works for us long before it was even recorded (link in our bio). is one of our favorite musicians anywhere, and one of the most versatile we know. He seamlessly jumps between his avant-country band Laila and Smitty, Tuesday nights at Barbes with Slavic Soul Party, freely improvised gigs, and performances with rock bands like the Walkmen. He truly does it all, and does it all well! On top of that, he is just an awesome person. When he started a trio with Christopher Hoffman on cello and Nathan Ellman-Bell on drums (two more of our favorite musicians, who just sound so incredible together on this record) we told Kenny we would put the record out before we even heard the music. We love the songs that became Sweet World, and we hope you will too!

This one is LP + digital, and the acoustic trio of trumpet, cello, and drums transferred to vinyl in an awesome way. Definitely an album worth owning on vinyl! The cover photo (check out that jawbreaker!) and album design is by TJ Huff and the Bandcamp page has some great liner notes by Kenny himself. Enjoy!

This band is absolutely on fire on this track! Blood Burden is such an incredible debut for Alfredo, and we can’t wait to share the rest with you.

V.M.C.S. is dedicated to Alfredo’s older brother Vladimir, who would often take him to museums during their childhood, and whose love of visual art inspired the composition. The quartet of Blood Burden features Alfredo on alto saxophone, Lex Korten on piano and Klavins Una Corda, Steve Williams on bass, and Connor Parks on drums. The full album comes out June 14, which is also the day of the release concert at The Jazz Gallery. Much more soon, but for now enjoy this track!

Here it is an art of collage and folding, sound upon sound, pulse against pulse, a gathering of LuMinous intensities of Song.” The alto saxophonist knows how to describe his work, in particular the work of his foursome of pianist Santiago Leibson, bassist Matt Pavolka, and drummer Mark Ferber on their new LuMiSong album. I’ve been watching the vinyl go round and round in last two weeks, and the swirling motifs stack up with the kind of eloquence that pulls you deeper into the action with each spin. A dedication to inflection helps this process. So does a give and take movement that finds the individual musicians disappearing and a branded group persona rising forth. Guess I’m a “sound upon sound” guy. Or at least I am when they stack it as cleverly as they do in “Mister Softee Is a Front.” —Jim Macnie

In Kenny’s own words: “New York is my favorite city in the world because it is home to people from every culture on the planet. None of these songs are literally in the style of anything in particular, but I think you will hear some of those multi-cultural elements step forward.” “I wrote most of these songs with Nathan and Chris in mind. I tried to bring my whole musical self to this project. I love so many kinds of music. Improvisation is central to everything I do. The written material for these pieces all fit on one or two pages and each of them creates a little world for the three of us to play around in.”

You will recognize Alfredo’s name as a guest artist on Christopher Hoffman - Vision Is The Identity (OOYH 026) where he contributed his talents on EWI, but Blood Burden fully puts his alto saxophone playing front and center, blazing through eight compositions (seven of his own and one interpretation of a Son House song) with a quartet of Lex Korten, Steve Williams, and Connor Parks. RELEASE DAY! We've been so excited for this record for a long time, and we're thrilled to announce that Nick Dunston - COLLA VOCE (OOYH 027) is OUT NOW! There is a link in the comments to listen anywhere you like to listen to music, and head to Bandcamp to grab a CD, digital copy for keeps, and check out the beautiful art by TJ Huff. This is Nick's third studio album we've worked together on, and his fifth counting two Untamed (for Atlantic Extraction and Spider Season). It is not an exaggeration to say that he defies expectations every time he brings us new music. We were completely blown away the first time we heard COLLA VOCE, his Afro-Surrealist Anti-Opera, and every time we listen something new grabs our attention. We definitely recommend headphones to hear the full depth of production by Nick and Weston Olencki, fully utilizing the studio as an instrument.

The personnel is split between two recording sessions, one in NYC and one in Berlin, and you'll hear the incredible talents of producer Weston Olencki; vocalists Cansu Tanrıkulu, Isabel Crespo Pardo, Sofia Jernberg, Friede Merz; instrumentalists JACK Quartet, Tal Yahalom, Maria Reich, Anil Eraslan, Moritz Baumgärtner; engineered by Guy Sternberg (Berlin session) and Ryan Streber (NYC session), mastered by Eivind Opsvik, and artwork + design by TJ Huff. Limited Wax Mage LP variants of Deerlady - Greatest hits are in stock (as are the standard black LP, which are already shipping)! Another perfect match with the cover art, the Wax Mage Records team caught the very subtle blue in the image and ran with it. Wax Mage Records are hand-poured one-of-a-kind LPs, and are a limited edition of 25 for $75 each. Mali, Magdalena, and the label are all vinyl nerds so we each grabbed one, which leaves 22 of these that will go up for sale. The drop will be MONDAY APRIL 29 at 1pm EST, and these will ship immediately. They’ll go live in the Deerlady Bandcamp page, link in comments.

Also a note for this first pressing, we submitted album art before they named the band Deerlady, so the spine says Mali Obomsawin and Magdaela Abrego. If/when we repress this they’ll get printed as Deerlady, so that will be a little tell as to which ones are the first run. Superfans, go grab a standard vinyl before they are gone (they’re going fast)!

OUT TODAY! The final single from Nick Dunston - COLLA VOCE, titled ‘Blinding, Joyous, Fearful’ is out now and steaming everywhere (link in comments)! It is the only track on the album soley written for the JACK Quartet, and is Nick’s first time exploring Just Intonation as part of his compositional process. Check Nick’s IG post for more info on the track, and just look at that incredible single artwork by TJ Huff!

COLLA VOCE release day is this Friday April 26, and you really don’t want to miss this entire album. CDs are now in stock and shipping as of today. The whole package for this (music, art/design, etc) is incredible, so if you are a CD person we highly recommend grabbing one.

Angels Migration, the first single from Kenny Warren - Sweet World (OOYH 028) featuring ChristopherHoffman on cello and Nathan Ellman-bell on drums, is now available everywhere (link in comments)! Listen anywhere you like to listen to music, and if you like records be sure to grab an LP via Bandcamp. This trio played live a ton before making the recording, and you can really hear that throughout. They sound amazing, and the extra awesome instrumentation of trumpet, cello, and drums is...well, extra awesome. Awesome to see ChristopherHoffman - Vision Is The Identity in Best Jazz on Bandcamp March 2024! Big thanks to Dave Sumner for this great review. Link in comments for full review as well as Vision merch (LP, hoodies, stickers, digital).

Change is the guiding force of this month’s selections. That’s not a particularly novel characteristic in the grand scheme of the modern jazz scene, as it seems like every new month is the next stage of the music’s evolution. But in the context of this particular column, there’s meaning to be drawn from the observation. Nearly all of the inclusions are from musicians whose current recording is a departure from what came before. In some instances, it’s a small change and, perhaps, even foreseen. For others, it’s out of the blue. Not sure I would have it any other way.

Based on Christopher Hoffman’s established association with Henry Threadgill’s Zooid, as well as the cellist’s bird-of-a-feather 2021 release Asp Nimbus, listeners might understandably have certain expectations of the way Vision is the Identity would sound. Hoffman would like to have a word with those expectations. The cellist’s latest steamrolls all of them with a strong electronic music influence and a focused, driven, rhythmic attitude. Melodically, the ensemble throws out some feints and misdirects, but more often than not, it lands right near the spot it had pointed to at the outset. Hoffman’s core is a trio with keyboardist Frank LoCrasto and drummer Bill Campbell, but adds some nifty guest appearances by Henry Threadgill, Anna Webber, Ryan Scott, and Alfredo Colón (on wind instruments, guitar, and EWI respectively).

Some words from Nick about the track:

Right off the bat, it is important to mention to those who have listened to my debut album, that the penultimate tracks of Atlantic Extraction and COLLA VOCE, A Rolling Wave of Nothing and A Rolling Wave of Everything (respectively) are conceptually related. This track bears commonalities with operatic and theatrical musical genres. As an ‘11 o’clock number’, it is essentially the banger of the album, in terms of both energy and ample derivations to the material that precedes it. This track features Maria Reich on violin, and vocalist Cansu Tanrikulu, who gives a glimpse of her broad overall artistic range, and she masterfully engages with the text that both develops a sense of playing with (un)familiarity while also directly addressing the music. To put it more bluntly, much of the text-turned-lyrics of this track are literally instructions and suggestions to the musicians in the notated score itself.

We are doing a limited run of black hoodies (white ink on black shirt) with the grim reaper art from - Vision Is The Identity by . These will be a large screen print on a pocketless hoodie to allow for larger art, on a Comfort Colors 1467 Hoodie, printed by in Richmond VA. TJ converted the cover image to a single color to allow for a screen print (which is the coolest way to print on a shirt!) and these are going to look amazing! Pre-order goes live as soon as Vision releases tonight at midnight (the only away to allow you to get the full album download free with hoodie purchase).

So that we can order correct sizes, these will be on pre-order until April 1, 2024, which is the last chance to guarantee a specific size. Once we have the full order we expect a turnaround time of roughly 2-3 weeks, to begin shipping in mid April. We will order a few extras of each size, but if you would like one please pre-order so we can get an accurate count.

We are thrilled to announce our next record, Kenny Warren - Sweet World (OOYH 028), featuring @christopherhoffman on cello, @nathan__eb on drums, and @kennydotwarren on trumpet. Kenny wrote all the music specifically for this band, and it’s so fun to listen to the trio navigate this music. Fans of OOYH are already very familiar with Chris’ playing, and he and Nathan make a stand-out rhythm section on Sweet World. Kenny has been a friend of Out Of Your Head for a long time, playing as part of the collective in the early Brooklyn days, and we’ve been huge fans of his music since Laila and Smitty’s first record, and hearing him many Tuesday nights at Barbes with Slavic Soul Party. Nathan has actually been in the OOYH orbit even longer, having performed on some of the very first OOYH Collective shows in Baltimore at the Windup Space. Sweet World is due out on May 24 on LP + Digital, and we’ll have a super limited amount of what promises to be a very cool vinyl variant on this one.
