Republican state legislatures across the country are debating significant reforms in state university systems. The"Tenure with Responsibilities Act" is dead for now, but there is clearly plenty of support in the ND legislature for severely weakening tenure and faculty governance.

I here express gratitude to all of the people who opposed North Dakota House Bill 1446 (the retaliatory tenure bill). From the introduction of the bill in the ND House to the failed motion to reconsider in the ND Senate, we were focused and proactive along the way.

In the North Dakota Senate, reconsideration was not successful for HB 1446 (the retaliatory tenure bill). We must now watch for an attempt to introduce one or more aspects of HB 1446 into another bill in a conference committee, etc.

The North Dakota Senate has voted down a controversial bill that would have made it easier for presidents at Bismarck State College and Dickinson State University to dismiss tenured faculty.
