In line with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to environmental sustainability and pest control in flood-prone areas, the Delta State Government initiated fumigation of public facilities through the Ministry of Environment last weekend.

The fumigation started in Ellu, Isoko North Local Government Area, to reduce infestations and combat diseases like cholera and Lassa fever.

This initiative will extend to other flood-prone communities in the Delta South Senatorial District, including Bomadi, Patani, and Warri. In an address, The Commissioner of Environment, Hon. Jamani Ejiro, advised residents, particularly in low-lying areas, to move to higher ground due to potential flooding forecasted by NIMET this year.

Public facilities in Ellu, including schools and markets in Obie Irri and Obrogo communities, were part of the areas covered during this exercise.

LG Polls: Delta PDP dismisses APC’s emotional instability; Says it's caused by trauma

Once again, the attention of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has been called to yet another gibberish published online with the headline: “DSIEC recruits, trains PDP members as ad hoc staff for July 13th Delta LG polls.”

For us in PDP, as well as other right thinking observers, we have become used to the regular antics and spurious allegations of the APC in every election season and we are not at all surprised that they have typically resorted to accusing the electoral umpire, this time DSIEC, of a recruitment exercise that only exists in their delusional imagination.

This of course is the usual smokescreen employed by a political party that simply doesn't have the wherewithal to organize a proper campaign and it is even clear that the medium used in delivering the weird report of the accusation is heavily compromised in intent and purpose, and out rightly malicious in carrying out the obvious hatchet job.

Indeed, how else should a proper news medium which knows it's onions be described, when it decided to throw caution to the wind and become unethically opinionated in the opening paragraph of its story in which it stated: “The expectations of Deltans of having what can be considered as credible election in the proposed July 13th Local Government polls might have been dashed as the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), has recruited and trained members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as ad hoc staff for the conduct of the elections.”

This evidently diminishes and dismisses any claim of the report being authentic and for us in PDP, it is a worthless story. The innuendoes and concocted accusations against Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) are untenable, unsubstantiated and fall into the category of tales by moonlight. Otherwise, we dare the medium and its APC sponsors to provide incontrovertible proof of what they have alleged against DSIEC.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), a party that is presently without shape or form in Delta State, has once again deployed its antic of sponsoring a spurious report to mischievously cast aspersion on the good work that DSIEC is doing and sow the seed of doubt by creating the impression that the forthcoming Local Government elections will not be credible, for the simple reason that the party is not and has not prepared for the election.

Of course every one observing what is going on can attest to the fact that APC in Delta State is a party in disarray, rudderless, with no clear cut leadership; it is a party where, to paraphrase the immortal quote of Chinua Achebe, "turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer, things have fallen apart and the centre can no longer hold, with mere anarchy loosed upon Delta APC".

Is this the party to be taken seriously with bogus allegations that DSIEC recruited ad hoc officials from PDP members that it will use for the Local Government elections? Is DSIEC just conducting council elections in 2024 in Delta State for the first time? How did it conduct the elections in the previous years? If it did not recruit ad hoc staff from the PDP in previous elections, why will the State electoral body do it in 2024? Infact allegations like this were also the stock in trade of APC in previous elections and they were conclusively proven to be completely false and roundly dismissed outrightly.

The organ through which APC brought out its jaundiced report, claimed to have done some investigations from which it drew its biased conclusion against DSIEC, yet did not give any convincing proof of conducting proper investigation that would make its report credible.

The very online report showed its partisan and bigoted disposition when it succeeded in talking to only the APC State Publicity Secretary, but failed to engage or interface with the PDP State officials so as to balance up the story.

Unfortunately for the medium, the Delta APC Publicity Secretary Barr. Valentine Onojehuo, said that the party was not aware that DSIEC was conducting training for ad hoc staff pointing out that the Commission hardly furnished other political parties with information on the activities leading to the conduct of the election, but the issue he refused to acknowledge is that the APC in the State is not unaware that DSIEC will be conducting the Council elections and for which all registered political parties are eligible to field candidates.

How will a party that is disorganized and messy as a result of its disorderly state, and which did not campaign and has no visible posters of most of its candidates anywhere else except on social media, have the temerity to seek to create an impression that the coming Local Government elections will not be credible?

We are in the days of Artificial Intelligence (AI), through which mischief makers can spin abracadabra just to hoodwink the unwary. But Deltans know better and are not deceived. While PDP in all the 25 Local Government Areas are engaged in comprehensive and well reported campaigns, selling their candidates and seeking their votes, APC, the party with stunted growth and without visibility in Delta State, is crying wolf where there’s none, and seeking to employ disingenuous means to badmouth an election for which the State electoral body has gone far in its preparations.

PDP in Delta State is already in the thick of electioneering campaigns, and we believe so also are other political parties. But let APC, a band of unserious and disorderly politicians be reminded that PDP is on ground in Delta State and will not be distracted by its hysteria. It is the people’s party. That is why Delta is PDP and PDP is Delta. There’s no amount of silly pranks by the unmanageable and traumatized APC that will work to frustrate the council elections.

Delta PDP is fully on ground and will continue to cooperate with DSIEC to ensure that it conducts credible Local Government elections in the State.

PDP! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!

Signed:

Engr. Dan Ossai, MNSE, CEng.
State Secretary,
PDP, Delta State.

DO YOU KNOW?

His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's administration in Delta State has taken significant steps to ease land acquisition as a strategy to mitigate Nigeria's housing deficit, which reached 28 million units as of 2023?

Central to this initiative is the enforcement of the 2018 Delta State Public and Private Property Law, designed to combat illegal land occupation and the disruptive 'deve’ syndrome, which has historically hindered land development. This law imposes strict penalties on those who unlawfully enter or occupy land, ensuring that transactions are legal and straightforward.

In addition to legal reforms, Delta State has partnered with the federal government on the Renewed Hope Housing Estate project, which plans to build 50,000 housing units across Nigeria, with a significant portion in Delta.

This collaboration aims to provide affordable housing and stimulate local development, aligning with the governor's agenda for meaningful growth and improved living standards.

UNEMPLOYMENT: OBOREVWORI TASKS YOUTHS ON SKILL ACQUISITION, FINANCIAL LITERACY

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, charged youths in the country to acquire skills and financial literacy that would enable them become self employed instead of searching for white collar jobs.

Governor Oborevwori gave the charge at the Niger Delta Viewpoint Small Medium Enterprises, NDVP-SME Conference 2024 with Theme: 'Financial Literacy and Skill Acquisition, A Journey To Self Actualisation' held in Asaba.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Prince Johnson Erijo, Governor Oborevwori said acquisition of skills in various fields was a sure avenue for self development and empowerment, calling on young people to learn from and emulate successful entrepreneurs by starting businesses of their choice.

The Governor said: "The training of our youths and women in self actualising knowledge and skills to make them economically independent is a most welcome development.

"The time has come to wean our people, especially the youths, from sole dependence on government for the provision of all human capital development mechanism, especially through white collar jobs. Government alone cannot employ everybody.

"It has therefore become necessary to train our people in various areas where they can become entrepreneurs, grow their businesses and become employers of labour.

"I am happy this programme will train our people in financial literacy. This way, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs can find their way in independently negotiating and accessing funds to grow their businesses, thereby creating opportunities for them to become employers of labour."

He said the State government has trained thousands of youths - male female alike - in skills acquisition in various fields and empowered them to start their chosen businesses on their own.

Governor Oborevwori said; "we sincerely believe that the State has created a sizeable pool of entrepreneurs capable of revolutionising SMEs in the State. But we also know that more needs to be done.

"It is noteworthy that this initiative covers catering, fashion, IT, both soft and hardware, farming, manufacturing and the creative industry.

"These array of skills acquisition is capable of making participants economically self reliant. I urge all participants to pay serious attention and be well equipped in the knowledge of whatever area they have chosen. The market for your products and services are readily available.

"I implore the organisers to lay emphasis on mentoring. Some graduates of skill acquisition often branch off from what they have learnt. But serious mentoring will stave off this attitude. Please give proper attention to mentoring."

Welcoming participants earlier, Founder and Group Managing Director of Kudimata Nigeria Limited, Mrs Kathleen Erhimu said after working for over 40 years in the financial world it became imperative to work for herself while creating value for others.

She stated that Kudimata was birthed two years ago as a hybrid educational financial service provider driven towards providing basic financial education, advisory, business support, internship, mentorship, empowerment, training and development to individuals and small-scale businesses in the interest of economic growth and long-term viability via Community (FINCOM) model.

Lead Speaker and Founder, House of Tara, Mrs Tara Fela-Durotoye in her presentation harped on the importance of relationship, reputation and resilience in the business world.

On his part, Mudiaga Enajemo, CEO of Mudi Africa, said he built his brand for over 30 years with talent and self-confidence and urged Nigerian youths to build on their talent by undergoing requisite training needed to grow their businesses.

Frank Onosigho, a lawyer who spoke on legal basics for entrepreneurs, said businesses must be registered through the Corporate Affairs Commission CAC, as well as building trust and relationships for excellence and sustainability in business.

At the ceremony, Kudimata in conjunction with Prudential Energy presented cheques worth N500,000 each to 50 beneficiaries to start up their own businesses.

OBOREVWORI TASKS WEALTHY DELTANS, ORGANISATIONS ON DEVELOPMENT OF DELTA

Delta State Government has called on multi-national companies, Non-governmental Organisations, philanthropists and well to do Deltans both at home and in the diaspora to contribute their quota in fast-tracking sustainable development in all parts of the state.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made the call while inaugurating a block of six classrooms each in four secondary schools at Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state which were renovated by members of Ogwashi-Uku Association, USA Inc.

The four schools that benefited from the Association's gesture were Adaigbo Mixed Secondary School, Comprehensive Secondary School, Saint Roses Girls Grammar School and Nshiagu College all in Ogwashi-Uku.

Rt. Hon. Oborevwori who commended sons and daughters of Ogwashi-Uku based in the United States of America for their laudable gesture, called on well spirited individuals to follow their footsteps as government alone could not address the entire needs of the people.

The governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, said several road projects have been initiated by the present administration, pointing out that the MORE Agenda of his administration was aimed at advancing development in the state.

He said the state has 489 secondary schools, 51,000 employees, 12,900 local government employees as well as other commitments, hence the need for reliable partnership.

"I am so happy that you are not just building physical infrastructure, you are also equipping them. So, we would like to thank you for this gesture.

"The reward for hard work is more work. So, we expect that many more would be done in the other areas.

"They should do things that they will be remembered for. This association, Ogwashi-Uku Development Union, USA, will be remembered for something very good.

"Other communities should borrow a leave from the association as what they have done is something worth emulating.

"As you can see, some critical infrastructure are being executed here in Ogwashi-Uku. You couldn't have driven past Ibusa all the way to Ogwashi-Uku on that bye-pass, that is a lot of access road, that is an inlet into Ogwashi-Uku. If you don't do that, how are you going to have access," he added.

Meanwhile, the governor charged various communities in the state to protect all government projects in their domains from vandals, even as he solicited the support of all in ensuring that peace reigned in all parts of the state.

Earlier in his address on the Association, Dr. Henrietta Udensi, underscored the importance of education in societal growth and development, adding that it was the best legacy parents could bequeath their children.

She noted that education was the best investment for sustainable development, pointing out that education would continue to receive the attention of all stakeholders both at the local, state and federal levels in Nigeria, just as she disclosed that it was for this reason that the Ogwashi-Uku Association USA INC decided to embaek on the ex*****on of the projects.

Executive Assistant to the governor on Community Development, Mr. Emakpor Odogwu and other speakers at the ceremony described the projects as laudable and charged students and management of the benefiting schools to put the renovated classrooms blocks into good use.

In their separate remarks, principals of the four secondary schools who expressed profound appreciation to members of Ogwashi-Uku Association in the United States of America, assured them that they would make good use of the school facilities in addition to protecting them from vandals.

OBOREVWORI ADVOCATES EFFECTIVE FEDERATION ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Thursday, advocated for an effective management of the Federation Account for sustainable development of Nigeria.

Governor Oborevwori gave the charge at the retreat for members of Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) (Post-Mortem) Sub-Committee held in Asaba.

He said the theme of the retreat "Efficient Management of Federation Account" is apt and timely as FAAC remains the major source of revenue for the federal, state and local governments to fund developmental projects.

Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, Oborevwori lauded FAAC for its role in carrying out in-depth analysis of Revenue Generating Agencies as presented during their monthly meetings and periodic review of performances of the Revenue Generating Agencies.

He appreciated RMFAC and the Post Moterm Sub-committee for being instrumental to the refunds being received by the sub-nationals, especially the oil-producing states which has enhanced the capacity of government to deliver legacy projects to the people.

According to him, Delta State as a major oil producing state has contributed immensely to the Federation Account, adding that the retreat affords the state the opportunity to interact with the managers of the account.

"The retreat affords FAAC Post Mortem Sub-committee members to review the past records especially from January 2021 to December 2023 and ensure all areas of revenues not captured are identified.

"It also avails the Committee the opportunity to look at the areas that need improvement," he said.

In guiding the Committee for efficient management of FAAC, Oborevwori tasked the FAAC Post-Mortem Sub-Committee to "ensure that all funds generated were paid to the Federation Account promptly and application of right sharing formula.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun represented by Delta State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, said the retreat provides a valid platform for discussion for efficient management of the nation’s finances.

He tasked the Committee to proffer innovative solutions and collaborative approaches to strengthen the nation's financial system.

In his address, RMFAC Chairman, Mr M.B. Shehu said the retreat came at a pivotal moment as the nation continue to navigate the complexities of the fiscal landscape to strengthen the financial architecture of Nigeria.

Shehu said: "Our collective work is crucial in ensuring that the financial resources of Nigeria are managed in a manner that promotes sustainable growth, economic stability, and improved welfare for all citizens.

Earlier in his keynote address, Chairman Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) (Post-Mortem) Sub-Committee, Alhaji Kabir Muhammad Mashi, said the Federation Account is the lifeblood of the nation’s fiscal architecture, serving as the primary conduit for revenue allocation to the three tiers of government.

"As custodians of this vital resource, we are entrusted with the sacred duty of ensuring transparency, accountability and prudence in its management", he said.

Director-General Nigeria Governors' Forum, NGF, Dr Abdulateef Sh*ttu, represented by Mrs Olubunmi Akanbi, said the NGF has continually improved State Fiscal Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) Programme leading to states now publishing their annual budgets according international best practices.

He said the NGF would always support any policies that will ensure adequate revenue inflow into the Federation Account and prompt disbursement of allocations to enable states maximise its economic potentials and provide conducive and quality living standards for their citizens.

The retreat is being attended by members of RMFAC including the Federal Commissioner representing Delta State in the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Mr Andrew Agbaga.

DELTA COMMENCES WORK ON 2024-2027 MEDIUM-TERM DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Delta State Government, Thursday, commenced preparatory work for the formulation of a new Medium-Term Development Plan, covering 2024-2027, for the state.

The State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sunny Ekadeyan, disclosed this in his welcome remarks at an enlightenment and orientation workshop for Focal Persons at Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) held at the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba.

Ekadeyen said the state achieved 80 per cent of its Medium-Term Development Plan for 2020-2023 and commended professionals from different cadres of the State Civil Service for their contributions to the effective realisation of the development plan.

Represented by the Director of Budget, Mr Thompson Olije, the Commissioner expressed gratitude for answering the clarion call, adding that the crucial task ahead would be of immense benefit not only to Delta State but also the entire nation.

"It is indeed an honour and a privilege to address this gathering of eloquent professionals from different cadres of the Civil Service who are dedicated to providing a plan for driving the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

"I can also recollect that the last edition was for 2020-2023 and, going through it, I discovered that at least 80% of the plan was achieved and this goes to show the dynamism of the Civil Servants as go- getters.

"As people in governance, we cannot over-emphasize the importance of this medium term development plan. It is the framework needed to drive the M.O.R.E. Agenda of the present government

"This is critical, given our ever-increasing needs in terms of health, education, potable water, roads and other socio- economic amenities, for sustainable development.

"I urge all of you to put in your best so that the Governor Oborevwori- led administration can effortlessly implement its M.O.R.E. agenda even as I have complete faith in your professional expertise and experience in executing this task successfully." Ekadeyan stated.

Workshop Consultant, Prof. Eric Eboh, said the purpose of the workshop was to enlighten and give orientation to Focal Persons from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for the generation, collation, organising, drafting and submission of writeup inputs into Delta State Medium Term Plan 2024-2027.

He said proper crafting of the Medium-Term Development Plan 2024-2027 was critical to the achievement of the MORE agenda and urged all to work towards achieving the aim of the meeting.

Prof. Eboh, pioneer Chief Jobs and Wealth Creation Officer in the state, said the development plan of any state or country was one of the most important documents and congratulated all the focal persons on being nominated to represent their MDAs.

Using China as a case study, Eboh said, the Asian country had had successful five-year development plan since 1953, adding that going by the growth rate projection, China would overtake United States of America as the largest economy in the world in 10 years time.

"In Nigeria, the current Medium-Term Development 2021-2025 is being realigned to the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Tinubu's administration.

"In Delta State, the oil sector accounts for 48 per cent of the states' Gtoss Domedtic Product (GDP) while the non- oil sector accounts for 52 per cent."

Eboh argued that the oil sector was just a revenue earner for the state and does not employ many people. He called for an improvement of the non-oil sector which employs more Deltans.

Welcoming participants earlier, the Director, Planning, Ministry of Economic Planning and Head of Drafting Task Team, Mrs Azuka Monyei, said the Medium-Term Development Plan was a very important document every country, state and local government should have, adding that the plan shows the road map on how the nation and state could plan for the welfare of its citizens especially in the current perilous times.

DTSG COMMENCES DISTRIBUTION OF 3RD PHASE PALLIATIVES TO ELEVEN LGSs

The Delta State Government has commenced the distribution of food palliatives to the Poor and Vulnerable House Holds (PVHH), as well as widows and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) across the 25 Local Government Areas of the State.

The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG) Dr Kingsley Emu, who also is the Chairman of the State Subsidy Palliative Committee, charged the coordinators and members of the 25 Local Government Areas of the State to ensure that the items for distribution gets to people affected by the subsidy removal.

Dr Emu gave the charge today when he supervised the distribution of food palliative items to 11 Local Government Areas of the State at the DAPA warehouse in Ibusa, saying that the state governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori is passionate about the transparency of the distribution exercise.

He stated that 940 bags of 25 kg rice, and 150 bags of 25 kg of garri was being distributed to the LGAs, and that items must be divided into equal proportion to the entire 20 DSIEC wards across the 25 LGA's, totaling 500 wards, so it can get down to targeted persons in the ward.

The SSG equally stated that the State Palliative Committee decided to use the DSIEC wards for the distribution for effective grassroots pe*******on, and ease of administration, adding that priority attention shall be given to persons who did not benefit from previous palliatives distribution in the state.

He called on the Committee LGAs Coordinators to be transparent in order for them to deliver on their assigned responsibilities, with firm instruction to LGA Coordinators to submit reports of distribution with photographs and video recording of the exercise.

The 11 Local Government Areas that received their palliative items today were Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Oshimili North, Oshimli South, Isoko South, Ika South, Warri South, Uvwie, Ndokwa West, Ughelli North and Ughelli South.

It would be recalled that on the 13th of June, this year, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori flagged off the 3rd phase of the State palliative distribution to vulnerable residents in the State.
