Government has decided to posthumously award Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of India to Shri Karpoori Thakur, the former Chief Minister of Bihar. Karpoori Thakur was the 11th CM of Bihar and was popularly known as 'Jan Nayak', or the leader of the people.

Karpoori Thakur managed to emerge as the tallest backward caste leader in Bihar despite belonging to the minority nai (barber) caste himself, but the rise of the leaders he mentored, from numerically stronger castes (Lalu Prasad from the Yadavs, Ram Vilas Paswan among Dalits), took away his pole position. He was CM for short tenures, but his radical policy decisions had an outsized impact, and resonate even today.

As the Mandal-Kamandal politics intensifies, Thakur’s legacy is being claimed by all political players in Bihar. CM Nitish Kumar, himself from a numerically small EBC community, has specially sought to identify closely with Thakur.
While Opposition leaders in Bihar have welcomed the announcement, saying their long-standing demand has been fulfilled, the BJP has accused them of selling the legendary leader's legacy for votes. Some have highlighted it as a politically motivated move keeping in view the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

BJP has offered two Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat to Janata Dal (Secular) i.e. JDS, which is demanding three seats in Karnataka. Last time BJP had contested on 27 seats, out of which it had won 25 seats and an independent candidate supported by it was also successful in winning. This time BJP has decided to contest on 26 seats.

Apart from giving two-three seats to Apna Dal and Nishad Party in Uttar Pradesh, BJP will itself contest all the remaining seats. AJSU is certain to get one seat in Jharkhand. In South India, BJP is placing maximum emphasis on Tamil Nadu after Karnataka, but talks have not yet started with AIADMK on seat sharing and contesting elections together. Even if talks take place, BJP can demand more than 15 seats for itself in Tamil Nadu.

There will be a similar condition with TDP (Telugu Desam Party) in Andhra Pradesh too, but considering the cooperative attitude of YRS Reddy, BJP may avoid forming an alliance with TDP there. BJP's message to allies is clear. The popularity of PM Modi will also guarantee victory for the candidates of allied parties and they will be in advantage even after fighting on less seats. Similarly, this time BJP has decided to put the full strength of the organization on the seats given to allies and campaign equally.

18/01/2024

Shiv Sena, which was part of NDA, won 18 seats after fighting on 23 seats in LS elections 2019. After the split between Shiv Sena and NCP, BJP is leading in Maharashtra. Similarly, after JDU's exit from Bihar, BJP is preparing to contest afresh on more than 30 seats. In 2014, BJP had contested on 30 seats and won on 22 seats. Whereas, LJP had won six out of seven seats.

In 2019, due to the agreement with JDU, BJP had given up its five won seats and was successful in winning all the seats by fighting on 17 seats. At the same time, JDU had won 16 out of 17 seats. Despite fighting on one seat less, LJP was successful in winning all six seats. This time BJP is trying to convince LJP on four seats. In case of more pressure, LJP can consider giving up to five seats.

At the same time, Upendra Kushwaha's party Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal may be given one or two seats and Jitan Ram Manjhi's party HAM may be given one seat. BJP's effort is to contest on 33 seats in Bihar itself.

Allies in NDA may have to be satisfied with fewer seats to contest in the LS elections. BJP is preparing to contest on more seats this time compared to 2019 and efforts are on to convince allies on fewer seats. According to statistics, there are 39 parties in NDA but very few of them will get a chance to contest the elections.

In the last LS elections (2019), BJP contested on 437 seats, and won 303 seats. Till now BJP has not formally given the slogan of the target of seats in the Lok Sabha. Some Chief Ministers of the party are claiming to win 350 to 450 seats, but senior leaders of the party are definitely claiming to win more seats than last time. Considering the public welfare schemes and the nationwide popularity of PM Narendra Modi among various sections of the society, this does not seem impossible, but to win more seats, the party is considering it necessary to contest more seats than last time. Obviously, BJP's seats will increase only at the expense of its allies.

According to statistics, there are 39 parties in NDA, but very few of them will get a chance to contest the Lok Sabha elections. Although formal talks have not yet started for seat sharing in the NDA, but according to highly placed sources, the highest demand for seats from the allies is likely to be in Maharashtra and Bihar. In Maharashtra, Shinde faction of Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar faction of NCP are strong regional parties, but BJP has made it clear that it will fight on 30 to 35 seats alone and both the allies will have to be content with the remaining seats. In 2019, BJP had contested 25 seats in Maharashtra and was successful in winning 23 seats.

How will the equation come out to be?! let's wait for further updates.

18. The Seventeenth Loksabha (2014-19):

Riding the wave of Nationalism, popular schemes and the lack of an alternative leader who can match Narendra Modi, the BJP romped home with an increased mandate. Narendra Modi led BJP won 303 seats on its own and crossed the 350 mark with its NDA allies. Narendra Modi became only the 3rd person in India’s history to have secured a single party majority two times in a row, after Jawaharlal Nehru & Indira Gandhi. The Congress received a drubbing again winning only 52 seats. Congress President Rahul Gandhi even lost the election from Amethi.

17/01/2024

17. The Sixteenth Loksabha (2014-19):

The second term of the UPA proved to be a disaster with numerous allegations of corruption & scams. 2G, Coal Block, Adarsh, Commonwealth Games to name a few. The silence of the Prime Minister and the perception that he had no real power made matters worse. The BJP was successfully able to project Narendra Modi as the man of the hour and also as its Prime Ministerial candidate. Rahul Gandhi could not match Narendra Modi. The BJP won majority on its own with 282 seats while the Congress recorded its worst ever performance with just 44 seats. This was the first time since 1984 that a party won a majority on its own.

17/01/2024

16. The Fifteenth Loksabha (2009-14):

The Congress led UPA implemented a lot of its promises including the enactment of Right to Information (RTI) & the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). It also waived off farm loans in 2008. Against this background, it went into the polls in 2009. The NDA on the other hand was led by L K Advani. The Congress won 206 seats, a huge improvement from 2004. The BJP could win only 116. The regional parties won 146 seats. The UPA came to power for the second term in a row. Dr. Manmohan Singh was sworn in as the Prime Minister for the second time.

17/01/2024

15. The Fourteenth Loksabha (2004-09):

The BJP went in for early elections alongside launching an ‘India Shining’ campaign. Though it could win the middle class vote, the poorer sections voted for the Congress and other regional parties resulting in the defeat of the NDA. The BJP could win only 138 seats while the Congress improved its tally to 145. The regional parties again ruled the roost with 159 seats. The BJP conceded defeat and the Congress then formed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) with support from other parties and outside support from the left parties. Sonia Gandhi refused to become the Prime Minister amidst the controversy about her foreign origin. Manmohan Singh was chosen as the Prime Minister.

17/01/2024

14. The Thirteenth Loksabha (1999-2004):

These elections were held in the backdrop of the Kargil war. The BJP again emerged as the single largest party with 182 seats while the congress could win only 114. This time the regional parties won 158 seats. The BJP was able to form a more stable NDA this time around and this was the first time that a non congress alliance lasted a full five year term. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was sworn in as the Prime Minister for the third time.

17/01/2024

13. The Twelfth Loksabha (1998-99):

The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 182 seats out of 543. Congress won 141 and the other regional parties won 101 seats. The BJP formed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with other regional parties. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was sworn in as the Prime Minister for the second time. His government could not last long and he had to resign after 13 months in office after the AIADMK withdrew support. The NDA lost by just one vote when Dr. Giridhar Gamang, the then Chief Minister of Odisha and also a MP, voted against the NDA. The nuclear tests at Pokhran, The Kargil war were some of the important incidents in this term.
