Reflecting on a very satisfying weekend of music, with two very different styles of DJ set going back to back with talented mates.

Friday at the Plough with Jonathan Coles aka DJ Dad was a bucketlist moment and the crowd didn't disappoint with their response. We played uptempo bangers to a heaving, sweat-drenched room and I even had to cut the music for a sec to tell em to calm down at one point (Boo! Funspoiler). Rave, dancehall, amapiano, Bollywood, MENA and Afrobeats were the order of the day, skirting through the genres like a gert skirty thing.

Saturday afternoon was a more chilled-out affair, but no less eclectic, at Motion Lock Yard for Balearic Burger. A lovely setting by the river, with a whole afternoon of sunshine vibes. Joe Mugford and I played everything from Sun-el Musician to Sade, Julian Cope to Luke Vibert and even a very exclusive lovers rock version of 'Sometimes'by Erasure. Again, laughing in the face of genre consistency, but increasingly that's become the default with these sets.

Truly two of my favourite times DJing. Vibes were totally on point, and I love the thrill of playing alongside other people, where you don't know where we're going to go next

Last weekend my friends and I got to attend (and play at) a wonderful small festival in Wales.

The people who put it together did a tremendous job, not without a lot of sweat and work.

Putting events like this can feel thankless, so I'd like to thank Stu Housley and his team, and also my friend Kaptin Barrett who took on a large part of the music programming and got us to play.

Kaptin's written a lovely blog about his experiencing running and attending the festival, and I encourage everyone to read it.

Big Love, the really lovely small festival in Usk in Wales are starting to get down to their last tickets, so if you're still thinking of going, take a look. There are £150 ticks for the whole weekend, with the option of "buy 4 get one free". Or there are day-parters too if you can't make the whole thing.

Arrested Development are the headliners, and there's a nice spread of other bands and djs throughout the time, including a Terrain x Super Soca Takeover on the Sunday with me, Sam, Jordan, Kaptin, Nico, Tony Bongosan and a few others.

It really is one of my favourite weekends of the year. Very low stress and hassle. And this year you can bring kids for the first time.

And also.... Come join us this weekend at Bristol's excellent Document for a Courtyard Session.

This'll be lots of fun, and I'm thinking of busting out a bit of vintage funk, reggae, rock, oldies and world music sounds as a treat.

Super exciting news!

The Fire Engine Stage has been announced ar Big Love Festival, and Terrain has been invited to host a takeover on the Sunday featuring Super Soca Show, inda Flo and lol old me.

Been to this festival the last two years and it's become incredinly dear to me, so this is a massive honour. Just a really lovely chilled out affair with an eclectic, fun lineup

They're introducing kids tickets for the first time too, so it's great for families.

Just found a really fun set of classic 50s, 60s, 70s bangers that I played out at Boomtown a couple of years ago. Not releasing it publicly, but there's a private link below

Fun to go out in Portugal and watch people unironically lose their minds to old eighties Eurobeat and Italo songs.

Indeed, "Cheri Cheri Lady" by Modern Talking became something of an unofficial holiday anthem. Kitsch as you like, but delightful nonetheless.

Put me in mind of this mix I made ages ago (see below) of Mutant and Italo disco. It's great! I'd love to play out a set of this kind of thing if anyone would host.

The weekly playlist is updated!

Each week, I scrub it and add an hour of tunes I've been digging, new and old. It's always a big mixed bag from golden oldies to the latest bangers, so give it a follow and let me know what you liked, what you didn't like, and what made you slightly confused. https://tinyurl.com/bdefn2hw

In sadder news, after two and a half years of subjecting its patrons to all sorts of eclectic dubious dubries, Club Stoic no longer has a residency at The Bell pub. All good things must come to an end, and they have made the sound commercial decision to concentrate on garage and D'n'B nights going forwards. Can't blame them.

I'd like to thank Liv and the whole team at The Bell for putting up with us and always making us feel so welcome. It's been an absolute blast and an honour to invite so many guests and great friends to spin with us behind those hallowed decks. Too many to list here, but thank you for being a part of it.

For now, I'll be concentrating on the Terrain project, with our monthly residency every last Saturday of the month at The Jam Jar Bristol playing the latest global club bangers.

All told, I'd like to continue the Club Stoic project, be that at a new home somewhere in the West Country, guest slots, or possibly something like a radio slot or podcast. If you have any ideas, give me a shout and let's talk!

I'd definitely like to make the most of my time and play a couple of DJ sets while I'm there. If you know of anyone who would appreciate a blend of global bass bangers, ravey hype tunes or possibly something else, let me know!

Say, did you check out the weekly playlist yet? Each week for the last several months, I've been putting together a weekly Spotify mixtape of stuff I've been checking out. No fixed genre, new and old, and designed to be listened through in one hour. Each week it gets scrubbed and refilled.

Give it a whirl. Link below

Revisiting The Black Dog's 'Spanners' album this morning. I've never quite known what to think of this sprawling, implacable record, which despite being my introduction to the Plaid universe, boasts less of the melodic immediacy they would more brazenly turn out once the Black Dog parted ways.

Instead this goes for a more alien (as in a 90s "take me to your dealer" type of alien) collage of detuned ambient synths, head-shop syncopated rhythms, weird squiggles, and samples of people talking about extraterrestrial encounters.

Of course this was peak 1995, and the ambient japery of the Orb was still in full swing, so we can forgive some of Spanners' more hippyish indulgences. Still, the difference between 1993 and 1995 feels culturally worlds apart, so it's no wonder Plaid would change tack significantly when they split with band mate Ken Downie.

That's not to say Spanners doesn't have its charms, of course. And coming back to it, I'm surprised at how many tracks stick out that I'd previously ignored. The highlight will always be the one-two of Psil-cosyin and Chase The Manhattan; and while it's deemed very uncool these days to use the word "tribal" when talking about electronic music, these two tracks definitely milk that style of "fourth-world" techno that would garner such a description.

Unlike their later work as Plaid, melodies are hinted at, rather than indulged-in. Some might find this asceticism frustrating: more than a handful of tracks end just as they seem to be getting to where they're going. But restrained as they can be on Spanners, there are moments and snatches of pure loveliness, like on Pot Noddle, and especially the really quite lovely ambient closer Chesh.
