Stay safe and stay warm, Cibola!
Be cautious and avoid driving if possible. Because of the storm a number of local businesses and government offices may be closed. Please call ahead before you risk driving on roads which may be slick and dangerous. Avoid creating additional work for first responders (and a potentially costly medical bill) by staying off the roads in these dangerous conditions.

📰 Correction of Fact 📰

We at the Cibola Citizen Newspaper would like to issue a correction regarding a recent article that was published in our publication. The story, Grants Firefighter Faces DUI charges, covered an incident that occurred on July 22, 2023, involving Officer Kyle Saavedra of the Grants Police Department.

In the article, we mistakenly stated that Mr. Robert Morris was a firefighter, which was inaccurate. We deeply regret this error and sincerely apologize to both Grants Fire and Rescue and the Grants Police Department for the mistake.

Upon reevaluating the report, we have confirmed that Mr. Robert Morris is not associated with Grants Fire and Rescue or any other firefighting department. Instead, he was involved in a vehicle accident and was subsequently arrested due to suspicions of driving under the influence.

As a responsible and committed news organization, we strive to provide accurate and reliable information to our community. We understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of our reporting, and we deeply regret any confusion or inconvenience that our mistake may have caused.

To address this issue, we will be publishing a formal correction in next week's edition to ensure that our readers are fully informed and have the correct details regarding the incident.

Once again, we extend our sincerest apologies to Grants Fire and Rescue, the Grants Police Department, and our readers for this oversight. We value your trust in our reporting, and we will continue to work diligently to uphold the highest standards of journalism.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

BLM Rio Puerco Field Office implements Chain of Craters prescribed fire
Press release
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Beginning TODAY, April 10 through the month of April, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will conduct the Chain of Craters prescribed fire, weather permitting. The Chain of Craters prescribed fire is located south of State Highway 53 and west of County Road 42, approximately 35 miles southwest of Grants, in Cibola County.

Over the last several years, the BLM has treated over 20,000 acres in the Chain of Craters landscape using prescribed fire and thinning. Fire managers estimate it will take five to seven days to complete burn operations; however, smoke may be visible during and for several days following the burns. BLM will continue to monitor the project post-implementation to help ensure the fire stays within the planned burn area.

The project area is approximately 2,500 acres of ponderosa pine, piñon and juniper trees and will be conducted in several phases. The goal is to reduce the density and hazardous accumulations of vegetation that, under the right conditions, could contribute to high intensity fire. Coordination has occurred and will continue with the National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, New Mexico Air Quality Bureau, Ramah Medical Facility and local grazing permittees. To notify the public during the burn, signs will be posted along County Road 42 and at the Continental Divide Trailhead. Smoke may be visible from State Highways 53 and 117.

Our managers carefully develop burn plans for implementation of each prescribed fire to ensure they meet land management objectives and that fire can be safely and effectively managed. If conditions move outside the predetermined parameters, ignitions will be conducted a different day when conditions improve. Reducing the volume of vegetation under prescribed conditions enables land managers to mimic the natural fire cycle, thus minimizing the dangers and risks associated with unplanned wildfires.

Before and during all prescribed fires, fire managers coordinate with the New Mexico Environment Department and follow all air quality regulations. People susceptible to or affected by COVID-19 may have health conditions that make them vulnerable to smoke exposure. For more information about risks and protecting your health, please visit https://nmfireinfo.com/smoke-management/.

For questions about this project, contact the BLM Rio Puerco Field Office at (505) 761-8700. For details about the implementation of the project, visit NMFireInfo.com; Twitter , or facebook.com/nmfireinfo.
