“Body language, in all the intricate, diverse forms it can be expressed, remains the one untainted aspect of human interaction. It’s a natural signal of the way we feel, desire to engage and ultimately connect.” - Bianca Farmakis in HUMAN FORM by Lewis Stevenson for SIDE-NOTE.COM [link in bio]

“Our favourite artists draw inspiration from the creatives that came before them, weaving their expressions into a new body of work that we in turn, wear, watch, consume and discuss. It’s a cyclical pattern of imitation, reinvention and conversation, all geared towards connectivity and the plight of capturing who we are at a given period of time.” - Bianca Farmakis in HUMAN FORM by Lewis Stevenson for SIDE-NOTE.COM [link in bio]

“Bridges are burnt and built, roads and lines are crossed, boundaries are resurrected where monumental experiences once lay. "To know my singular experience of motherhood, I had to know and love my daughter. (Before I arrive at my point about how my little girl wants to be a professional artist one day, I’ll mention here her kindness and her joy, which is endless; it's a privilege to be in her orbit)" - Mariela Summerhays for THE BECOMING OF A MOTHER by Adrian Price for SIDE-NOTE.COM [link in bio]

"It’s an alchemy that has occurred billions of times before, the becoming of a mother –an indiscernible compounding of the minutes spent being responsible for another human – yet it never happens the exact same way twice." - Mariela Summerhays in THE BECOMING OF A MOTHER ft. “Behind the lens, they’re a testament to the artfulness of collaboration and the efforts of hands and minds coming together to create a still moment of humanity, stuck in a constant state of change. They’re a reminder it takes a village to craft a single portrait of a character, and make you question, how do you really see the people who are in your world?”

"I probably learnt too late in life that one of the most liberating things you can say is “I don’t know”. In an era where knowledge is power, confidence has become a currency, and a lack of a concise thought can leave you feeling penniless. Cluelessness and curiosity however, while on opposite ends of a perception spectrum, exist harmoniously – to not know, is often to want to learn, to delve deeper into a subject to make up for what we’ve been missing. Art does this better than anything – it’s a constant pursuit of knowledge, the epitome of evolution displayed on a canvas, screen, catwalk or score.

Most recently cinema gave us Barbie and Oppenheimer – two blockbuster hits that explored the human condition from subjects that couldn’t appear more opposed, both searching for answers to the same complex questions: what does it mean to be human, how do we define the experience, how do we remember – and more importantly, re-examine – our impact on humanity?

To that, my answer unsurprisingly is I don’t know. It seems futile at first, possibly a cop out upon reflection, but it’s honest. The one thing I know for certain about the time lived between the numbers printed on our birth certificates and the numbers engraved on our tombstones is that the constant pursuit of understanding one another and the world around us is far more intriguing than any alternative.“

"The Sado Island ferry left from the port of Nigaata on January 1st. Nigaata is the kind of place you go where people ask you why you'd go there. I imagine some tourists telling me proudly they are coming to Australia to see Gosford or Grafton, and I understand the reactions we get." "Should you not find God in a voice from a burning bush or deity marked by a many-headed snake, whether you be young or old, there is always an altar worth visiting in the stillness, in the centremost of your soul." - Mariela Summerhays in THE AGE OF AUTHENTICITY for SIDE-NOTE.COM [link in bio]

"We used to turn to God for guidance in the search for a good life, but couldn’t be certain that He was listening. So there are those who stopped coming by the altar, and instead, took the ability to be one’s most genuine or essential self as their prevailing moral compass.” - Mariela Summerhays in THE AGE OF AUTHENTICITY for SIDE-NOTE.COM [link in bio]

H is for hair, according to Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski’s FW '23 show, as sleek locks dyed to match monochromatic looks shined under the spotlight.

The creative director said after the show “hair is about identity”, drawing on the “strong feminine attribute” it can encompass, and its capacity to “express your beautiful side.”

Such an idea, coupled with the symbolic relevance of power and seduction our tresses hold, was visible in the collection. References ranged from literal-braided knit sweaters, sleek shearlings, to jackets fastened to resemble a ponytail.

Colour was minimal with single tones leveraged play with textures. One bold Scarlett look paired a simple turtle neck, front-split skirt, over coat and metallic red cap, all boasting different materials.

A sense of solidarity and unity was broken apart solely by the spectacle of the collection’s coats - structured leather trench-adjacent garments and draping shearlings were splintered between crossed-body knit jumpers. Sealed together with a unique take on the bucket bag - some of which were cinched in for an hourglass effect - and revived fall staples, the collection ultimately sang for a communal (chic) evening by a fireplace.
