Small Town Dapper Canadian Small Town. Tailoring enthusiast. Follow my style journey Greetings, I’m Simon B. I have worked over 10 years in public, parapublic and private sectors.

I’m a professional computer engineer by trade, with a passion for menswear and craftsmanship for many years. Studying engineering made me appreciate the effort, knowledge and practice required for proper craftsmanship, especially in suits, shoes, ties and other garments. After I started reading about watches from an engineering perspective, my interest shifted towards menswear. I am also a directo

r on a few boards, both public and non-profit, while also working in management. More often than not, I have been the youngest at the table, hence the importance of looking the part. Therefore, my interest lies in executive attire but isn’t limited to suits. I also appreciate a more casual approach and am always willing to learn. Even though I live in a small town, dressing up is a part of me. I never skip an occasion to wear a suit, a tie or a sport coat. My style is something personal that grows up with me. Mistakes, missteps, change and improvements are all part of the journey. Wearing proper suits lets me feel amazing while encouraging the industry I love and the artisans I admire. I believe executive menswear enables you to express yourself and feel confident while giving you opportunities you would otherwise miss. It goes far beyond the clothing, style or comfort, it just works. Military uniforms, politicians, kings and public figures all use executive dressing, simply because the psychology behind it was proven again and again. After all, clothing is a tool like any other. In August 2021, I started an Instagram account and made it to 45k followers in less than a year! I love sharing my passion on menswear and being part of that community. Matching the off colors of the outfit : the orange and gold of the tie highlight the cuff links and watch, which also matching the shoes and pocket square.
This outfit can certainly become a go-to outfit for formal business meetings or boards.
It checks all the boxes and was actually fun to put together!

Fall means the darker charcoal and heavier fabrics are back in fashion.
Hence this double breasted charcoal herringbone suit, striped shirt, cuff links and unusual tie.

Up close outfit details!

This is the houndstooth suit I recently added to my collection, styled in a more casual manner, without the waistcoat.

The merino woll shirt features a similar sized pattern called basket weave. I chose a bolder tie in brown and navy, highlighter by the shoes, socks and pocket square.

Do you prefer this suit with or without the waistcoat?

Glencheck and green details!
Not much going on here at first sight.
However, after closing inspection, there are a few mixes of textures and patterns : glencheck jacket, herringbone tie, striped shirt. Also, there are several shades of greens in the accessories, all highlighting the tie.

What do you think about the combination?

Textered three piece suit details!
This one is a personal favorite when not going for a boardroom look.
The is some much texture going on here : the merino wool shirt, the linen tie, the herringbone socks and of course the houndstooth suit fabric.

Despite the waistcoat, the fabric and accessories make that ensemble perfect for off the clock events. I dare say it might be the perfect Sunday brunch suit, if you can ever wear a suit to such events.
Also, the pocket square brings everything together here in my opinion.

Would you wear this to off the clock events?

Wearing that suit like I believe it is meant to be worn : a textured casual ensemble.
The off white shirt, the textured linen burnt orange tie and pattern of the suit all pair quite harmoniously. This is not something I would wear to a board room, but rather to a social event outside business hours or for travel.

Lighter color palette details.
Double breasted navy blazer with some light blue, navy and cyan shades and cream trousers.
I also tried picking up the the more subtle colors like the pink of the tie with the pocket square, which is a less obvious choice than a pink or light blue pocket square.

Did I succeed?

Business royal blue pinstripe details!

The orange and blue tones of the tie match the stripes of the shirt and the colors of the suit pretty well. Don't be afraid to mix stripes with pinstripes, you'll be surprised.
Also, personally, I really enjoy geometric patterns with pinstripe suits, always seems to work.

Have you mixed stripes ties or shirt with pinstripe suits?

Detailed shots of my business diner outfit is Nashville.
The suit is simple, yet the double breasted waistcoat, peak lapels and waistcoat give it some character.

The tie is the piece that steals the show in that outfit in my opinion. The silver lines pair very well with the suit, cuff links and watch, while the orange/red details are highlighted by the pocket square and shoes.

Which part of the outfit is your favorite piece?

Navy 3 piece suit details!

This is the suit I wore for the first day of the trade show last week.

I think this fabric is perfect for a business suit : it has that classic solid look from afar while showcasing some lighter blue checks up close.

The double breasted waistcoat, peak lapels and stronger shoulder make it perfect for those dressed up occasions.
Combine that fabric with a few orange accessories and you are business ready!

Have you ever tried a checked fabric for a business suit?

The contrasting waistcoat, something I appreciate more and more as I go through my menswear journey.
I used to be scared of it, always sticking to the same fabric as the suit. I find it adds a lot to the outfit, while also showcasing a bit of personality.
In my opinion, the rest of the ensemble must remain rather simple because the waistcoat already introduces another color/texture.

This is a look that definitely requires so getting used to, at least for me, but it is well worth it.
Have you tried to wear a contrasting waistcoat?

Grey and blue details - Go-to look!
If you've been around this page for a while, that look will be very familiar.
Grey POW with blue shirt and trousers is a personal favorite.

Here's another take on it, featuring a madder silk tie over the typical grenadine one.
Very similar, but very different feel in my opinion.
The unique sheen provided by the tie changes the whole dynamic, making that outfit much less modern, more sartorial.
The pocket square picks up the red in the tie, though that remains quite subtle.
I played a bit with the socks as well, which add a bit of fun to the whole affair.

Full business attire with a mix of patterns.

I was reluctant to pair that shirt with the suit because of the stripes being somewhat similar in size. It turned out surprisingly well in my opinion.
The look is also "almost" monochromatic, showing only a splash of red in the tie and silver in the cufflinks.

Except for the waistcoat that I purposely left out, this look ticks all the boxes for me.
Are you one to try several stripes pattern in the same outfit?

Gold and blue details!!!
This is pattern mixing the way I like it : solid suit + double stripes.
A very simple but effective approach, both formal and visually striking.
I decided to go for black shoes for added formality, even though brown shoes would have worked just as well.

Are you one to repeat the same pattern twice in your outfits?

Orange and blues with pattern galore.
The linen suit and accessories might not look like much at first sight, but there are a ton of patterns displayed here :
1️⃣ Glen check linen suit
2️⃣ Floral orange tie
3️⃣ Striped blue and white shirt
4️⃣ Geometric pocket square
5️⃣ Herringbone orange/brown socks

As you can see, many patterns does not mean chaos, balance and harmony is possible.

Starting the week with a splash of purple, a color very underused in menswear.
When it does manage to get worn, it is often with dark suits or evening outfits (at least from what I have seen).
Here is a different way : with a sport coat. Polka dots and glen check pair very well, even better with a grey stripes.

Grey and brown are meant to be worn together, but that doesn't mean it has to be casual. Mixing the stripes of the shirt and tie also highlights the pocket square contour.

Navy and gold is turning out to be a combination I quite enjoy and go back to.
At first glance, the outfit doesn't appear to have that many patterns going on.
If you look closer, there are many : striped shirt, basketweave tie, glen check jacket and a pocket featuring an image.

Back to classic formal outfits without the full suit.
To me, this is a fine example on how the blazer/chinos look can be elevated to a boardroom ready look :
1️⃣ A bold quality tie : Serves as both high and low since the pattern is bold, but the orange tones complete the blues and navy colors.
2️⃣ French cuff shirt and cufflinks - bringing some formality
3️⃣ The shirt collar tucking nicely under the jacket rather than a button down one.

The lower formal garments are actually the trousers and blazers, because of both the fabrics and a general style : Hopsack, cotton and patch pockets

In my opinion, this outfit mixes some fun elements all over while achieving the put together impression I enjoy.

Kicking off the week in a rather business casual look.
I wanted a more relaxed look, suited for a terrace or outside event in the country.
The brown jacket, knit tie and cream trousers achieve just that, while the white shirt keeps things somewhat formal.
I intentionally matched the watch dial, socks, pocket square and tie to create some harmony in the outfit.

If you've been checking my page for a while, you should not be surprised by this combination : grenadine and checked shirt is a personal favorite.
However, the choice of pocket square pushes my usual comfort zone to new boundaries. The splash of color highlights the socks, tie and suit very well, without being too much.

This pocket square is my favorite one in my collection at the moment. With all the colors it features, I can wear it with pretty any other combination, which is a testament to how good this garment is. Truly a masterpiece from Silvio Fiorello .

A very light colored outfit to address the heatwave.
Once again a menswear uniform - but with much lighter shades than usual here.
I have been wearing this tie for years, but I still struggle to find this right balance of colors to make it work every time. Don't get me wrong, I think it is perfect for summer.
But the sheen and almost white shade makes it a strong contrast with almost any shirt.

But honestly, the pocket square steals the show.

Fighting the heat with proper summer garments :
1️⃣ Unlined Linen suit - Breathability reigns supreme
2️⃣ Merino wool shirt - Surprisingly lightweight, works equally well for summer or winter
3️⃣ Linen tie - Not as important as the other two, but provides some much welcomed texture without blocking the air.

This is easily something I can default too for summer office days.
