Designed by who describe the project as a “series of cabins - these structures provide accommodation for couples at the bend of river, just north of Bicheno.
The buildings establish a strong engagement with the wider site, through a series of interior strategies and plan relationships that create unique and memorable experiences for guests. The compact massing of the exterior form belies a complex and surprising interior structure – heightened by the materiality of the rooms. Connections to the wider site are made to focus certain landscape qualities, which serve to background the occupation of the rooms. The sense of interiority is most strongly experienced in the most intimate parts of the plan, where detailing sets a relief for the seasonal inhabitation of the interiors.”

The Forest House in Northern California was designed by as a cluster of tent cabins with three sleeping quarters and a living-dining common area that rise into the forest canopy on stilts and are linked by wooden paths and open gathering places.

The tented roofs and vanishing walls create an
immersive connection with the natural setting—its sounds and changing seasons—while large clear and mirrored-bronze glass windows frame views of the landscape and neighboring “rooms.” Wood walls and floors lend warmth and support the comforts of modern living deep within the forest.

Rustic goodness designed by with a clear brief: “Authentic materials that have visual character and age well were to be prioritised; plasterboard was not allowed. The bathroom needed to feel like it was almost an outdoor bathroom and able to stay open full time during warmer weather.
