Interesting article about some canoeists being reluctant to carry a spare paddle. I have never broken one but you sure can drop them in the water easily enough. It is nice to have a spare even if you only use it to retrieve a dropped paddle once or twice in your paddling life. On my last trip to Wabakimi I carried two spares, one Ottertail style wooden blade identical to my main blade and a slightly longer shafted carbon fibre white water blade that I tend to pull out only in white water. If I ever broke my main blade I wouldn't want to rely on a fat whitewater blade to propel me the rest of the trip. https://paddlingmag.com/stories/columns/butt-end/backcountry-spare-canoe-paddle-debate/?fbclid=IwY2xjawEt6rBleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHao0pAjOmunO0z6Z55ilsr6Z8Nsf-5rgCk0DHjHom1Ng_tbSiusjJdgvAw_aem_VYCtEuhF_fTgNCOrKd53-Q

Is two paddles too much of a good thing? Kevin Callan weighs in.

Photos are starting to emerge from Jasper. Stunning before and after pictures from the 2024 fire. Our family has hiked the Edith Cavell area and my wife and I started our Tonquin Valley backpacking trip there. Fire is natural but the change is drastic.

One thing that I didn't expect when I wrote a cookbook about dehydrated food was all the scammers that call wanting a piece of the action. I get tons of calls asking for money to put my book in book fairs. Last month I got a call asking for money so that I could be interviewed and 30 million viewers would see it. Today someone called asking to buy the movie rights to my book. I felt compelled to clarify that this is a cookbook about dehydrated food, there isn't much of a story line.

It just amazes me how many people are out there combing through data and trying to find an easy mark. I am sure there are lots of folks who self published a novel and think it should do better in the market and some of these folks must fall prey to these scams. There is a whole industry of scammers out there cold calling self published authors.

I don't think you can get any more niche than a dehydrated food cookbook. The average person on the street probably doesn't even know someone who would be interested in my book. I think that level of niche helps me spot these scams. I'm not really interested in getting my title in front of 30 million people, but if someone could get it in front of 1,000 through hikers then I would be interested.

“It was a dream!”

"On my latest canoe trip, my group spotted bags of garbage left at several backcountry campsites, lined up by the shore like you’d put garbage by the curb for early morning pickup. On our campsite, the forest floor behind our tent pads was decorated with white toilet paper mounds and human p**p. Countless living trees had been hacked down by Daniel Boone wannabes. And while on a day trip on Lake Opeongo, we went to shore to put out campfires left burning after the occupants had cleared off their sites. What the heck is going on out there?" asks Kevin Callan.

Increased backcountry use—and misuse—has some paddlers calling for mandatory educational orientations for backcountry canoeists. Kevin Callan wades into the murky debate: https://bit.ly/4dqIY7d

I made a video of my solo backpacking trip on the Casque Isle Trail a few years ago and since then the group has referred to me as "Friend of the trail". In the video I say "That's the trail" a number of times. I have hiked all the long trails on the north shore of Lake Superior (Pukaskwa, L. Superior, Sleeping Giant, Superior Hiking trail and even Isle Royal) a few sections of the Casques Trail are more rugged than any other section of those other trails. It is a challenging trail, in places, but it is well worth it. Those videos are starting to look old and aren't the production quality I am able to do now, but I hope they continue to highlight this amazing volunteer maintained trail.

In honour of our friend, yes, that is the trail. Kevin Outdoors

WE'RE GOING TO OPASQUIA!!!!

Starting July 1st we'll have one 40lb 16' Souris River Kevlar Prospector available for rental, located in Opasquia at Big Hook Wilderness Camp's Central Lake camp.

If you've ever dreamt of being as far from the maddening crowds as possible, this is the place for you. Imagine being the only canoe in a 1.1 million acre park!

We are modernizing wildland fire management by enhancing our wildland fire program and proposing changes to the Forest Fires Prevention Act to:
• strengthen community preparedness and response
• improve the prevention and mitigation of wildland fires

Review our proposal and provide comments on the Environmental Registry of Ontario at: https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-8756
