I go back and forth on which werewolf horror flick to settle on and watch. I'm beginning to think that 1994's box office bomb "Wolf" might be a personal favorite. Why? Because it finally makes being a werewolf seem like an awesome thing to happen! Why is everyone so down about being infested by a wolf's spirit? Watch as Jack Nicholson staves off retirement, has revenge against everyone, and coincidentally courts Michelle Pfeiffer because he caught a case of lycanthropy. Wolf is good werewolf therapy. One of the only werewolf movies with a happy(ish) ending... if you can accept Jack Nicholson's wife being mauled to death as a happy ending.

Willy's Wonderland is a surprisingly strong addition to the haunted theme park subgenre of horror. Nic Cage says exactly zero lines as the mysterious, no-name janitor who finally cleans up a haunted children's fun center. The movie knows exactly what it is.

Loosely based on the Stephen King short story of the same name. The Boogeyman has some promising visual effects. The use of the little girl's glowing moon globe added some inventive reveals of the titular boogey-person... until the ball breaks. The girl from Yellow Jackets is great, if the audience can get past the bummer first scene. Trigger alerts for babies eaten in cribs!

Upside, downside for the new Hellraiser (2022) from Hulu:
Upside: Great puzzle box, Excellent special effects, cool setting
Downside: Summoning the cenobites seems to have no reward, it's all pain, no pleasure. The cenobites are a little dumb, and easily defeated (one gets stuck in a door!), making the prospect of any future sequels less exciting.

An old, unsung classic of the 1980's fixation on heavy metal album corrupting the youth. Stephen Dorff plays a boy who inadvertently opens a hole to hell in his backyard. If you're looking for a weird little whimsical horror film with 80's kids and bizarre goblin creatures crawling around, this is one to check out. Embrace the fall season, embrace Stephen Dorff.

William Friedkin's recent death has shone a spotlight on his masterwork, The Exorcist. What struck me about viewing the film was how little had changed from William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name. Friedkin succeeded to properly honor Blatty's intentions, while layering on additional visual dread of his own. The Exorcist spawned an entire subgenre of exorcism films, but it remains the best by far.

AMC's Interview with the Vampire is surprisingly good. It takes much of what was said and done in the 1994 film and softly reboots it decades later. Louis' story changes over time as his attitude towards his vampire mentor, Lestat, changes. Don't sleep on it.

As the first wisps of Fall begin, where do we go to get into the spirit of the coming cold? Something Wicked This Way Comes? A Nightmare Before Christmas? Killer Klowns from Outer Space?

Perhaps Night of the Creeps might scratch that itch. An instant classic from the apex of 80's horror, directed by the man who masterfully remade The Blob. Tom Atkins, as the surly, sarcastic detective, is always a fan favorite. The zombie-creating brain slugs are a genuinely unique visual effect. Frat house zombie b***r comedy at its finest.
