Had an utterly fabulous time celebrating the opening of with .ancrum! I also got to watch the artist create this enormous giraffe 🩒 specifically for the store! Isn’t it gorgeous?!

It was a day of delighting in independent bookstores, free speech, and get all the details about Kayla’s upcoming book The Corruption of Hollis Brown. (Y’all are unprepared for how cool it is!)

Mostly, it reminded me that my people are out there, much closer than I told myself they were a few days ago. It’s important to build community, and moments like this are foundation stones.

I’m tired of living through unprecedented times.

I’m voting for good faith and calm heads and rational thought and spirited debated and listening to science and standing by your morals and owning your mistakes and the fundamental belief that no human is illegal and autonomy and choice and putting a person in the Oval Office who can lead with kindness and empathy and joy.

That’s why I voted for Kamala Harris and think you should too.

Welcome to Foxfire.

The rules here are pretty simple. Don’t whistle in the woods at night. Don’t answer if your name is called. Don’t look in the trees.

And remember
everything wants.

Verity Vox & the Curse of Foxfire is a very fake story about a very real place. It is a love letter to the mountains that brought me into this world as well as the people and places that get forgotten when people are treated like things.

It is also about a deal with a devil. A lot of deals with a devil, actually. A cat who is not a cat. A mountain that is not a mountain. And the small towns holding the hearts of q***r kids who keep one eye on the horizon at all times.

It is available for pre-order now and is expected to come out in August 2025 from Page Street YA.

The mantel of the witch is one that has been worn by people for all sorts of reasons.

There are those who don the black hat for political purposes, as a feminist symbol, or a way for those who find themselves on the margins of society in one way or another to reach for the power they otherwise could never hope to have.

Then there are the people call themselves witches because they cast spells and divine the future and talk to the dead. And still there are others conjuring up new titles or resurrecting old ones all in an attempt to define a personal spiritual path that is inclusive, empowering, and allows for a spark of magic in the real world.

I summoned three fabulous witches to help me call the corners, cast a circle, and chat all about how to walk the witches’ road in real life.

Thank you to for a fabulous evening of art and books and protest.

Also, to from for the invite.

There were drag queens reading children’s books and the most incredible ube pastries and zine making and voter registration and Black metalsmiths and did I mention the pastries because I went back multiple times.

Let’s move the needle, indeed. đŸ©”

First abuelita of the season.

Haunted Mansion is playing.

And we are (finally) decorating for Halloween.

I’m delayed because our house was getting several overdue and much needed repairs. They were expected to take 2 weeks, but they took 2 months.

I’m coming back to nonfiction with my fifth book WHERE DID EVERYBODY GO?

Contrary to what my therapist is paid to tell me, loneliness is a useful thing. It evolved alongside other necessary feelings like hunger and thirst.

Hunger tells us to eat. Thirst tells us to drink. Loneliness tells us to seek out others.

And yet we have a loneliness problem. A big one.

WHERE DID EVERYBODY GO? will explore what loneliness is, how it is weighed and measured, why it’s become a problem, and what to do about it.

From the search for new third spaces to the impact on our bodies to which groups are actually winning the war on loneliness, I’ll be cuddling up in your AirPods soon to tackle the question of loneliness together.

In the early 2000s there was this trend in nonfiction called the experiential memoir where an author would go off and do a thing for a year and write about it. You had Julie and Julia, a memoir by Julie Powell chronicling her experience cooking all the recipes from Julia Child’s cookbook in a year. There was Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver in which she and her family move to a farm to spend a year eating locally grown food. And, of course, you had Eat Pray Love where Elizabeth Gilbert trotted the globe finding herself and falling in love over the course of a year.

At the top of that heap was an author named AJ Jacobs. Whereas other authors dabbled in the experiential memoir, he has made it an entire brand. His book The Know It All came out in 2004, the year I graduated high school and went to college. It had a profound impact on me, as on its surface it was simply a book about a man who challenged himself to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in a year and write about the experience, but underneath the text I found a nuanced work that asked big questions like what even is knowledge, what is wisdom, and is knowing a lot of stuff equal to either of those things. He went on to great acclaim with his follow up book The Year of Living Biblically where he spent a year following the Bible as literally as possible for a year.

Jacobs has gone on to write about scientific experimentation, wellness, genealogy, gratitude, puzzles, and this year in a timely publication his book The Year of Living Constitutionally followed him as he tried to unpack what the Constitution is, why it matters, and whether it’s a good thing that the United States allows a document that is hundreds of years old and written during a time when leeches were the height of medicine to influence our lives today.

I kept my cool as I interviewed one of my literary heroes not just on the Constitution but on the concept of expertise, curiosity, and how to be a constant learner.

By all accounts Victoria Aveyard () is both an outlier and as close to the Hollywood version of becoming an author as it gets.

While the average age for a debut novelist is around 36, Victoria’s debut novel—Red Queen—was published shortly after graduating from college and went on to become a massive, runaway success. And so did all of the rest of her novels.

In fact, every one of Victoria’s novels has been a New York Times bestseller, and she even made it onto the coveted Bestseller Series list which is rareified air indeed.

So it came as quite a shock to her readers when, earlier this year, she talked about having to go back out on submission this year with what will be her debut Adult novel. They were even more shocked to learn that she received a number of rejections, thinking, of course, that past performance meant that every future book would automatically receive the green light from any future publisher.

I sat down with Victoria to have a long discussion about the actual job of being an author, what readers and prospective authors alike get right and wrong about the labor of a creative career, and how to reframe rejection for yourself as just another part of the job.
