Congrats to winners of 2018 Ohio's Best awards, an annual all-state competition hosted by three chapters of The Society of Professional Journalists. Among them, recognized at an event today, were Miami grads Emily Williams, 1st, business profiles, Columbus Dispatch; JD Malone, 1st, consumer reporting, Columbus Dispatch; Jenn Smola, 2nd, education reporting, Columbus Dispatch; Katie Wedell, 1st, public service journalism, Dayton Daily News; and Tana Weingartner and Maryanne Zeleznik, several 1sts and 2nds, WVXU-FM. Today: Terence Moore talks about his job as a national sports reporter and the responses he gets from the public to his writing. At 4 p.m. in 419 McGuffey! (flyer has wrong location)

Terence Moore ('78), a visiting prof in the Journalism Program, will speak at 4 p.m. Wednesday McGuffey Hall 419. His speech is titled "Handling the Haters." Moore has faced his share of criticism as a TV and web sports columnist at the national level -- including physical confrontations and even death threats. In his annual spring talk, Moore lays out his best solutions for dealing with Monday morning quarterbacks, know-it-all naysayers and anyone else itching for a fight. (Note: This is a NEW location, with change from the attached flyer!)

Cheryl Heckler Memorial
Scheduled for May 5

The Department of Media, Journalism & Film will remember Associate Professor of Journalism Cheryl Heckler -- our colleague who died in February -- at a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5 in the MacMillan Great Room.

Heckler taught at Miami for 20 years. She was also the adviser for The Miami Student from 1997 to 2004. Heckler also graduated from Miami in 1981 with a degree in journalism.

She died Feb. 18 at her home in Carthagena, Ohio. She was 59.

The Memorial Service will be followed with a reception. The Great Room in MacMillan is Room 212.
