The new year is just around the corner, which means new and updated laws are also just weeks away from taking effect.

For Illinois residents, the new year will once again bring an increase in the state's hourly minimum wage as part of a three-year gradual increase to a statewide $15 minimum wage for non-tipped workers.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2024, the hourly minimum wage for non-tipped workers will increase from $13 to $14, while the minimum wage for tipped employees will increase from $7.80 to $8.40.

The statewide minimum wage will see another increase on Jan. 1, 2025, the final implementation of the three-year gradual increase.

Jason Brown, who also went by Abdul Ja’Me, attempted to provide $500 in support of ISIS — aka the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham — three separate times in 2019, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) release.

According to court documents, the 41-year-old believed that he had given the money to a confidential source, believing it would be sent to an ISIS soldier in combat in Syria. However, the individual to whom he provided the money was confidentially working with law enforcement, and the ISIS fighter was actually an undercover law enforcement officer.

Along with attempting to support the terror group, Brown admitted that in 2019 he trafficked fentanyl and other illegal drugs from California to the Chicago suburbs. The drug trafficker also admitted to illegally possessing several loaded handguns to further his illegal activities.

According to the criminal complaint, Brown was the leader of the AHK street gang, which is based in the Chicago suburb of Bellwood, and comprised of former members of other gangs, including the Black P Stones, Gangster Disciples, and Four Corner Hustlers. AHK members trafficked various narcotics in the Chicago area, including a fentanyl analogue, he**in, and co***ne, and often boasted about the gang’s activities on social media, the charges allege.

On Wednesday, Brown pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to ISIS, one count of distributing fentanyl and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Damonica Stewart, 27, is charged with one count of burglary, one count of retail theft and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Omesha Hawkins, 28, and Onequa Hawkins, 32, are both charged with one count of burglary and two counts of retail theft.

At about 3:15 p.m. Monday, the three women allegedly entered the Oak Brook Ulta store located at 2155 W. 22nd Street and stole multiple items, totaling over $300, and left the store without paying.

According to prosecutors, the women then entered a BMW and fled the area. An Oak Brook police officer responded to the area and located the BMW that was allegedly turning against a one-way-only sign near 22nd Street and Midwest Road.

At that time, the officer activated his emergency lights and sirens and initiated a pursuit of the vehicle that was allegedly driven by Stewart.

Instead of pulling over, Stewart allegedly accelerated, reaching speeds of about 70 mph.

As she fled the officer, prosecutors say Stewart drove erratically down 22nd Street, weaving in and out of lanes. She also allegedly drove on the median to pass vehicles that were stopped at a stop light as well as drove between vehicles waiting at a stop light.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop after striking two other vehicles.

At that time, all three women were taken into custody.

After searching the BMW, authorities say they located stolen merchandise from Ulta.

“It is alleged that these three defendants helped themselves to more than three hundred dollars’ worth of merchandise from Ulta and simply walked out the door without paying,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “To make matters worse, it is alleged that the driver of their getaway vehicle, Ms. Stewart, then led police on a high-speed chase in the middle of the afternoon during the busy holiday shopping season, putting the general public as well as innocent motorists at risk.”

A judge denied pre-trial release for Stewart, while the other two suspects were released.

All three defendants are scheduled for arraignment on Dec. 26.

Firefighters were called to the historic home at 45th and South Michigan Avenue twice on Sunday to put down a fire. The cause is under investigation. No one was hurt. The fire broke out in the 4500 block of South Michigan Avenue, fire officials said.

Pictures posted to social media showed smoke coming out of the Swift Mansion as that location. Firefighters put the initial flames out, but just before 3 p.m., CFD posted more photos on social media, saying the fire had started again and was going through the roof. Those flames were eventually extinguished. No one was injured in the fire, and the extent of the damage was not immediately known.

The Swift Mansion was originally home to a prominent figure in Chicago’s meat packing industry before it became a funeral home and then the headquarters for the Chicago Urban League, according to the museum.

Fire officials saud there was rehabilitation work being done on the building, but the cause of the fire is not yet known.

I hope yall moved yall cars last night….Chicago’s annual Winter Overnight Parking Ban took effect at 3 a.m. Friday and will remain in place through April 1, regardless of snowfall. The ban prohibits parking on 107 miles of the city’s main streets from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. during the winter months.

Each year, the change leads to hundreds of tows for the first night.

While an exact number on how many people were towed so far this year due to the policy has not yet been released, several cars were seen being taken to one of two impound lots used by the city as the parking ban took effect. Last year, 242 cars were towed on the first night of Chicago’s Winter Overnight Parking Ban.

City officials said the decision to make the ban annual based on dates and not weather is intended to make it easier for residents.

“We’ve got to keep the city moving,” Cole Stallard, commissioner of the Department of Streets and Sanitation, said. “We feel the consistency is key. (The date) is Dec. 1 because you can’t predict Chicago weather.”

A federal judge has denied Texas’ request to bar U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents from cutting or removing razor-wire the state placed along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Despite previously granting the state’s request for a temporary restraining order, Judge Alia Moses said in her ruling Wednesday that Texas had not provided sufficient evidence to prove the federal government broke the law in removing razor-wire.

The state of Texas is currently suing the Biden administration over what they call U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s practice of “cutting, destroying, or otherwise damaging Texas’s concertina wire that had been strategically positioned for the purpose of securing the border and stemming the flow of illegal migration,” according to the lawsuit.

As part of Gov. Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, Texas authorities, including the Texas National Guard, have been installing fencing and barriers, sometimes made of concertina wire.

Placed along the U.S. side of the Rio Grande, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents have at times cut through, lifted or removed portions of the fencing to allow migrants to be apprehended, processed and sometimes disentangled from the razor-wire.

Angelina Ristorante, 3561 N. Broadway, failed a health inspection Monday after the inspector spotted more than 40 live roaches throughout the restaurant, said Jacob Martin, a public information coordinator for the Chicago Department of Public Health. The roaches were spotted in the basement, first floor and second floor of the building, including inside of coolers, Martin said.

Angelina’s license has been suspended until it passes another inspection. The Lakeview staple, which opened in 1988, is known for its fresh pasta and seafood. It’s named after the maternal grandmother of one of the restaurant’s co-founders.

The owners did not return requests for comment.

Letitia Jackson felt passionate about her career after getting hired by one of the state’s largest utility companies, where few other Black professionals worked.

“For me to be the face of a Black woman, that could say I know how to do construction, I know how to do piping,” Jackson said. “I was really proud of that and to say that I work at Peoples Gas — that was something I was proud of.”

But her aspirations of climbing the ranks of Peoples Gas fizzled as she started experiencing a culture she and other workers say discriminates against Black employees. She’s among 11 former and current Peoples Gas employees who filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against Peoples Gas, saying that Black workers and customers were sexualized by non-Black workers and faced racial slurs.

The lawsuit says Black workers are relegated to an area that serves the South Side, and they frequently get assigned to jobs in neighborhoods without security where some have faced attacks. The workers also allege that Peoples Gas did not do enough after concerns were raised about workplace racism and hazards.

Peoples Gas said the accusations aren’t true.

Several retailers, including companies with stores in Illinois, sold fruit that has been linked to a Listeria outbreak that’s left one person dead and at least 10 others hospitalized.

According to officials, the recalled fruit was sold at Publix, Wal-Mart and Albertsons locations in numerous states, and was also sold at Aldi’s locations across the country, including in Illinois.

Illinois is one of at least seven states where cases of Listeria have been reported amid the outbreak.

Officials are urging vigilance on the part of the public. While the recalled food is past its expiration date, some consumers may have frozen fruit, and the freezing process does not kill Listeria monocytogenes, according to the recall alert. Anyone who has eaten recalled products should monitor themselves for symptoms, as it can take up to 70 days for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Symptoms of Listeria can include vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, headache, and neck stiffness.

Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and those with compromised immune systems are at risk for serious illness and life-threatening infection. The recalled items include individual peaches and two-pound bags of peaches, nectarines and plums sold between May 1 and Nov. 15 of this year.

PLU stickets on fruit labeled USA-E-U containing the numbers:

Yellow Peach – 4044 or 4038

White Peach – 4401

Yellow Nectarine – 4036 or 4378

White Nectarine – 3035

Red Plum – 4042

Black Plum – 4040

HMC Farms peaches, plums or nectarines were sold in HMC Farms-branded bags. Signature Farms peaches and nectarines were also sold in branded bags.

Anyone with any of the recalled fruit is asked to throw it away immediately.

Five in total, Venezuelan migrants were arrested in two separate incidents last week after stealing hundreds of dollars in merchandise from retailers in the suburbs outside of Chicago, authorities said.

The latest incident happened just before 1 p.m. Saturday at a Macy’s store in Oak Brook, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Lenguieyer Guevara-Muro, 27, and Jinder Moises Angulo-Aparicio, 20, allegedly stuffed the $770 worth of clothing into a foil-lined bag and left the store without paying. Guevara-Muro left the store carrying the bag and refused to stop when loss prevention officers and an Oak Brook police officer on patrol approached him, according to authorities. He allegedly resisted when the police officer attempted to take him into custody and was taken to the ground and handcuffed.Angulo-Aparicio left the store a short time later and was taken into custody without incident. In a separate incident on Friday, three Venezuelan migrants stole more than $500 worth of merchandise from a Kohl’s store in Elmhurst, the state’s attorney’s office said.

Brandon said “Aht Aht Aht” it’s getting tired na and this BEEN an issue before I got here LOL‼️😩😭Back in May, Freshly inaugurated Chicago Mayor
Brandon Johnson says Chicago is a welcoming place for illegal
immigrants, but he also says that helping illegal immigrants reach his
sanctuary city is cruel and evil. Johnson claims he ‘inherited’ the city’s spiraling migrant crisis at press conference announcing new initiative to tackle the problem
Johnson criticized Lightfoot’s administration for not allocating budget for 2023’s migrant mission
The mayor also hit out at ‘right wing extremism’ he says is deliberately targeting a Democrat city run by a person of color. Johnson told reporters that ‘the international crisis that I inherited six months ago, I’ve made it very clear we are going to move people out of police districts, women and children who are living on floors and sleeping outside that we’re going to create spaces that provide more dignity.’ Windy City has come under strain after the city was inundated by 20,000 migrants over the last 14 months, triggering a crisis. Many were bused north from the southern border, which has been overwhelmed by migrants crossing from Mexico.

In Chicago, thousands of asylum seekers are staying at police stations and airports as the local government has run out of space to house them. Under her watch, crime rose by 42 percent and the city’s police complained about staff shortages and low morale: In May 2021, the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police issued a symbolic vote of no confidence against Lightfoot.

Mayor Johnson also blamed the ‘far right’ for Chicago’s ills during Tuesday’s press conference. ‘What we’ve seen is a very raggedy form of right-wing extremism, and quite frankly and they have been quite intentional about going after democratically ran cities that are led by people of color.’

‘There intention is to create division and chaos because that is what that particular political party has been about.

23/11/2023

Floating down the Chicago River might be something you think about during summertime, but a boating company in the city is hoping to change that, bringing a new kind of winter experience on the water.

The Chicago Electric Boat Company announced this month that it will now offer “hot tub boats” and heated boat rides for the winter months in the city. “Picture this: a bubbling hot tub, on a boat, cruising the Chicago River. It’s not just a boat ride; it’s a floating paradise, exclusively yours to enjoy,” the company wrote in a release. The 90-minute, six-passenger hot tub boat cruise is now taking reservations for the months of November and December, as well as “all of 2024.”

The price for the boats is $158 per hour, with two-hour windows available starting Dec. 8.

Authorities in the Chicago area have arrested more than 40 noncitizens for offenses they say include sexual assault, drug distribution, aggravated assault, and driving under the influence. Between Oct. 23 and Nov. 3, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) conducted a sweep which resulted in the arrests of 44 noncitizens that were determined to be a threat to national security, public safety or border security.

The operation targeted individuals with felonies, or misdemeanors for domestic violence, sexual abuse or exploitation, unlawful possession or use of a firearm, drug distribution or trafficking, or driving under the influence. Additionally, noncitizens who unlawfully re-entered the US after being previously removed were targeted.

“The noncitizens apprehended during this operation have shown a complete disregard for the laws in the United States,” ERO Chicago Field Office Director LaDeon Francis said in a statement.

Among the dozens arrested included:

A 42-year-old Mexican national in Rockford, Illinois, who was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim less than 13 years of age.
A 34-year-old Mexican national in Chicago, Illinois, who was convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
A 52-year-old previously removed Mexican national in Aurora, Illinois, who was convicted of manufacturing and delivery of co***ne, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and mob action.
A 27-year-old Mexican national in Chicago, Illinois, identified as a member of the Surenos 13 (Sur-13) street gang, and who was convicted of aggravated battery and domestic violence.
A 45-year-old previously removed Mexican national in Chicago, Illinois, who was convicted twice of felony manslaughter and aggravated assault. During the arrest, officers seized approximately 12.20 grams of suspected fentanyl.
In fiscal year 2022, ERO arrested 46,396 noncitizens with criminal histories across the US.

Extreme Weight Loss” star Brandi Mallory reportedly died in a Chipotle parking lot in Atlanta after dining at the restaurant.

A police report obtained allegedly states that Mallory, 40, was last seen on Nov. 8 in police-reviewed surveillance footage as she drove to the Chipotle around 5:53 p.m., entered the eatery, then returned to her vehicle, but never left the parking lot or got back out of her car.

An owner of a nearby deli told police he noticed a lone vehicle parked in the parking lot of a strip mall on the morning of Nov. 9, but claims the woman inside appeared to be sleeping, according to the docs.

But he became worried something was wrong later in the day when the car was still there.

Mallory was then reportedly found dead in the car.

Police do not suspect any foul play in Mallory’s death but her official cause of death is still under investigation.

17/11/2023

Johnson made the unanticipated announcement at a news conference after the Chicago City Council voted 41-8 to approve his 2024 budget, which sets aside $150 million to care for the more than 21,200 migrants sent to Chicago from the southern border, many on buses paid for by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Johnson said he would not “sacrifice the needs of Chicagoans in support of those who wish to become Chicagoans.”

Johnson’s remarks were his most direct acknowlegment of the deep racial divisions exposed by the crisis that has defined the mayor’s first six months in office.

“Chicago, I heard you, and I hear you,” Johnson said.

Johnson cast the city’s new approach as a fiscally responsible effort to respect the taxpayers of Chicago. Through the end of the year, the city expects to spend more than $363 million to care for the migrants, with little help from the federal government.

“This approach that we have right here is to make sure we are addressing the anxiety and fear that people have, whether you are a taxpayer or someone who is seeking asylum in the city of Chicago while speaking to our hopes and aspirations,” Johnson said.

The announcement represents Johnson’s first attempt to reduce the city resources available to the migrants currently in the city’s shelter system. It comes amid a significant backlash to the city’s efforts to care for the migrants and a political firestorm that defined the debate over the mayor’s first spending plan.

“We will always be a welcoming city and a sanctuary city,” Johnson said. Johnson said the move was designed to put “pressure on all levels of government to help move with some expedition” to get the more than 1,800 people forced to sleep on the floor of police stations or outside in thin tents, exposed to the rain and cold into more permanent housing.

Johnson first pledged to move the migrants out of the police stations in July, only to see the crisis escalate.
