We’re two collective-less qu**rs who got fed up with our arts’ self-obsessions - poetry and design. Meanwhile is what’s come out of our frustration. Ultimately, we’re a magazine that juxtaposes those two elements.
Upon a little reflection, though they’re strange bedfellows, poetry and design are a well-matched couple. The former is the most independent literary form - unrestricted in scope and distilled in nature, whilst the latter is dependent by design, conceived around something other than itself. We think this ultimately mirrors the experience of modern queerness - trapped oscillating between the polarities of a heightened ostentatious pride and the societal concealment into which it’s been forced. The combination of the two we hope will elevate the form - when each is wound around the other, it self-curates.
Meanwhile is a project that hopes to open an artistic space for the voices concurrent and contrary to those dictating today’s mainstream to be heard - that is to say, those voices that have been speaking in the meanwhile. So with that in mind we’ve thrown open the doors on submissions for our first edition and can’t wait to see what you all have got.
