On this day in 1892, 14 scientists organized the first Texas Academy of Science at the University of Texas to investigate and report upon such scientific problems as might be submitted by the state. Edgar Everhart, a chemist, served as the first president.

Come enjoy all things wool at the Frontier Times Museum on Saturday, Jan. 18. The museum will host a fun family activity day from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., to celebrate Bandera’s traditional wool and mohair industry. There will be wool-themed arts and crafts and fun activities for children throughout the day along with an author’s talk and demonstrations.

Looking back over the last seven decades, from this lofty perch I obtained by reaching what some call the golden years, I see a lot of things that make me thankful for the life I led as a kid. I can't imagine anyone claiming they had it better in some other place. Bandera was a paradise where we had freedoms that people can't even imagine being possible in our town today.

Also, the annual Bandera County Chamber of Commerce Taco Sale, held annually in front of the Bandera County Courthouse, will be Thursday, Jan. 9, beginning at 7 a.m.

Medina basketball is off to a great start in district play. The Lady Cats are currently in second place with a 4-1 district record, and the Bobcats are in a tie for the lead at this point with a 3-0 record. The Medina teams will host Utopia on Friday, Jan. 10, with games beginning at 4 p.m.
