From our compx in the Bronx:
The South Bronx Tenants Movement is a grassroots tenant organizing group in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. Our model is tenant-lead, anti-capitalist, building on class antagonism (against the landlord class), and completely autonomous!

We are looking for organizers interested in supporting our collective work as volunteer tenant organizers. We are offering a two-part training for those interested in learning more about our work and possibly joining us in our fight against gentrification and the landlord class!

The focus of our training is to provide a broader context to housing organizing in the South Bronx, how-to tools, and resources, and give you an idea of what our work as volunteer tenant organizers is all about.

Priority to attend our training will be given to working class, Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) folks in the Bronx who are bilingual in Spanish and show a commitment to organizing in the Bronx, and who are interested in joining us.

We are prioritizing applicants who have availability to attend our two-part in-person training. If someone can’t attend the training but would still be interested in connecting with us, they can contact us at [email protected].

The stresses of the pandemic and the demands for equity have moved many independent-restaurant workers to start labor-union drives. Will they get results?

"This is not a good job. At 7am, our warehouse is 100 degrees. We don't have air conditioning. We have cooks in the kitchen on the fryers that are 130 or 140 degrees making chips and sweating like pigs. Meanwhile, the managers have A/C.

I make $20.50 [an hour] after 37 years here. Most people make between $16.50 and $20 an hour. I haven't gotten a raise in a decade. Three years ago, I got a $600 bonus that was taxed, and three years before that I got another $600 bonus. That was my only "raise" for the past 10 years. This is from a Fortune 500 company that is making billions."

“Title 42 has turned away refugee families, which led the rise in unaccompanied minors reaching the border earlier this year. In the end, this is family separation by other means. For all their supposed differences, the Republicans and the Democrats are ruling class parties committed to enforcement-only immigration policies that safeguard the interests of US imperialism. Indeed, Kamala Harris’ “Do not come” statement is the Democrat’s equivalent of Donald Trump’s “Send them back!”.

Socialists must oppose any immigration policies that do not call for the abolition of border regimes and the fascist institutions that enforce them. When we argue for a world without borders, we don’t do so just for humanitarian reasons, but because we understand that immigrants’ rights are workers’ rights and because immigrant struggles are class struggle.”

Although the Biden administration has attempted to differentiate its immigration policies from those of Donald Trump, the end result has been the same: deportations, abuse and negligence of children jailed in detention centers and refugees turned away at the border. What’s more, Biden’s refusal ...

“If we want to reform labor law or change society in any significant way, leftists themselves need to get to work and build and exercise working class power among unorganized workers, independent of the business unions. It’s not about mobilizing activists to call their senators, it’s about building relationships and independent politicizing organizations of struggle with working class people. We can’t be waiting for business unions or nonprofits to build working class power–we need to do it ourselves, shoulder to shoulder with our fellow workers.”

No simple trick will organize Amazon. A Chicago Amazon worker speaks on how long-term relationships and trust have allowed rank-and-file workers to flex their power on the warehouse floor.

"High turnover has bedeviled unions for as long they’ve been organizing U.S. workers, but the vastness of Amazon’s workforce presents extreme challenges...On a more fundamental level, high turnover makes it harder to build solidarity. Those who come to see the warehouse as just a place to get a paycheck for a few months would feel less invested in the job, or a campaign to improve it. Workers who barely know one another would be less likely to trust each other or take risks together."

The churn inside Amazon’s warehouse and delivery network has created a formidable barrier to organizing.

"Manchin told the assembled donors that he needed help flipping a handful of Republicans from no to yes on the January 6 commission in order to strip the 'far left' of their best argument against the filibuster. The filibuster is a critical priority for the donors on the call, as it bottles up progressive legislation that would hit their bottom lines."

Manchin urged big-money donors with No Labels to talk to Sen. Roy Blunt about flipping his vote on the commission in order to save the filibuster.

14/06/2021

"Maybe [the Defund slogan is polling less favorably lately], but this generates a problem for organizing, not sloganeering. To take an example by comparison, the socialist left would not abandon the project of organized labor if, as it has done in living memory, approval of labor unions polled badly; we treat individual defeats of unionization efforts as failures of strategy and ex*****on, not as popular referenda on unions themselves. We need to extend the same patience to abolition as we do to the more canonical projects of the left. Building a different understanding of collective safety, one that prioritizes meeting people’s needs rather than pacifying the effects of poverty and abandonment, will take dedicated organizing: considerable material and affective support from within socialist organizations like DSA; solid coalition building between explicitly abolitionist thinkers and people who may not currently agree with us in theory but align with us in practice; the support of unions won through significant internal and external organizing; the remaking of legislative blocs at the state and municipal level; effective use of mass media to re-legitimate Defund as a radical demand; and thousands upon thousands of conversations with our neighbors, friends, family and coworkers. Support for, identification with and implementation of Defund, a demand that points towards a radically new ordering of social and political life, will not just take shape on its own. It will have to be built."

The demand to 'Defund the Police' has been under criticism, either for being out of step with public opinion or miring the rebellious potential of last summer in obscure skirmishes over municipal budgets. Here, Kay Gabriel lays out the strategic wager of campaigning to defund the police, recording t...

Repost from 🗣🗣 RALLY FOR STREET VENDORS - CORONA PLAZA! 🥁🥁

STOP THE FINES!
LET US RECOVER!
WE ARE WORKERS & SMALL BUSINESSES WITH RIGHTS!

Street vendors were in crisis long before the pandemic. With NYC re-opening & going back to ‘normal,’ vendors who barely survived this year are now targeted by the City with heavy fines for lack of business licensing.

But vendors are trapped - an arbitrary cap on permits/licenses available set in the 80s still prevents anyone from 'legally' entering the business. So the city hits them with fines - for vending food without a permit it’s $1,000, for selling merchandise without a license it’s $250.

Vendors need opportunities, not fines! We cannot go back to the way things were - we will not go back to the shadows!

If you love your local street vendor, come thru!
