🗣️Interview with Charlie
Hodge 👨‍🦱

🎙️: I'm sure when the baby was born, Elvis was very elated.

✨: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Well, it's just... You know, there's not an experience like that anywhere. That, you know, she was like my niece or something, because we were that tight as a family. And I felt like it was a miracle or something like that.

🎙️: Did Elvis have nicknames for Lisa?

✨Well, he called her an I***n and different little names like that. Mine for her was Punkin. In fact, I wrote a book. And it says in the front of it, 'For Punkin'. And Lisa asked me one time, she said, 'What's Punkin?' I said, 'It's a southern pronunciation of numnkin' And Looid And that's whot pumpkin'. And I said, 'And that's what we call like little children is Punkin'. She said, 'Oh' and then no more comments.

🎙️: What were Lisa's favorite things to do around Graceland when she was a little girl?

✨She had some children her own age to play with. And Elvis slept all day. And she just more or less ran wild. I mean, she did what she wanted to. I remember they used to take Pepsi-Colas and put sugar in them, you know, and shake them up and drink them, things like that. I remember one time his Aunt Delta who took care of the house for Elvis. She said, 'Charlie, can you get Lisa Marie to go take a bath?' She said, 'She won't do it for me'. And I think Joe and I were the only ones that could handle her this way. I went over, and I said, 'Lisa, let's come on......

She said, 'What?' I said, 'Come on upstairs. I'm going upstairs and giving you a bath. You won't do one for Delta. So, I'm going up and giving you a bath. And when your daddy wakes up, I'm going to tell him who did it'.

She said, 'You don't have to do that, Charlie. I'll take a bath'. ✨✨

Elvis Presley, known as the “King of Rock and Roll,” is arguably the most significant cultural figure of the 20th century. Born in 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis rose to fame in the mid-1950s with a unique blend of blues, gospel, and country, creating a new sound that would change the face of popular music. His early recordings at Sun Studio in Memphis, such as "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Hound Dog," became instant hits, and his charismatic stage presence and sultry voice made him a cultural phenomenon.

Elvis’s influence on rock music cannot be overstated. He was one of the first major artists to fuse African-American blues, gospel, and rhythm and blues with mainstream pop, creating the foundation for rock and roll. His distinctive style, both musically and visually, made him an icon, and his groundbreaking performances on television and in films helped him reach an audience that stretched far beyond the borders of the United States.

In the 1960s, Elvis’s career took a different direction with a series of successful films and a more mainstream pop sound. Despite this shift, his musical prowess never waned, and his 1968 "comeback" special marked a return to live performances, showcasing his enduring appeal. Hits like "Suspicious Minds," "Burning Love," and "American Trilogy" reaffirmed his status as one of the greatest entertainers in history.

Elvis's impact was not just musical; he was a social and cultural icon, embodying the rebellious spirit of rock ‘n’ roll and helping to shape the youth culture of the 1950s and beyond. He became a symbol of freedom, desire, and defiance, and his appeal transcended generations. Despite his personal struggles and the toll of his fame, Elvis's influence has endured in all corners of popular culture.

Tragically, Elvis Presley passed away in 1977 at the age of 42, but his legacy as the "King" of rock and roll lives on. His music continues to inspire artists across genres, and his influence can still be felt in the sound of contemporary pop, rock, and even hip hop.

Elvis Presley remains one of the best-selling and most celebrated artists in music history, and his status as an icon of American culture is unshakable. His songs, his persona, and his legacy continue to resonate with millions of fans around the world.

Elvis Presley, often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll," is one of the most influential cultural icons in history. Born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley rose from humble beginnings to become one of the biggest music stars of all time. He blended various genres such as blues, gospel, country, and pop, creating a sound that revolutionized the music industry and made him a global sensation. Presley's unique voice and charisma helped him bridge the gap between racial and social divides in the 1950s, and his contributions to music, fashion, and pop culture have been immeasurable.

Presley's career took off in 1956 when he released hits like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Hound Dog," which topped the charts and brought him international fame. Over the next two decades, he continued to dominate the music scene, releasing iconic songs such as "Love Me Tender," "Jailhouse Rock," and "Suspicious Minds." Aside from his music career, Presley was also a successful actor, starring in numerous films, though his movie career was often criticized for being formulaic. Despite this, he maintained a massive fan base and remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Sadly, Elvis Presley’s life was also marked by personal struggles, including his battle with addiction and the pressures of fame. He died on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42, but his influence continues to be felt worldwide. His legacy lives on through his music, films, and the millions of fans who continue to celebrate his achievements. Presley’s Graceland mansion remains a popular tourist destination, and his name is synonymous with the very essence of rock and roll.

Sam Thompson, Bodyguard:

"One time my sister Linda, my wife Louise and I had been down with Elvis to see the old Circle G Ranch in Mississippi and were on our way back to Memphis in Elvis's Stutz Bearcat.

We passed a little boy, maybe ten or eleven years old by the side of Highway 51. It was summer, it was hot - dust in the air. The kid was caked in dust, sitting at a little watermelon stand.

As we go by, Elvis pulls over; this was the middle of nowhere. This little kid - I know he knew who Elvis was, but he wasn't gonna let Elvis know that he knew.

He was a businessman this kid. He sat there and waited for Elvis to walk up. Elvis had to initiate the conversation, "How much are the watermelons?" A price was established. The kid was real tough and he wouldn't come off the price.

So finally Elvis just turned around and said, "We'll take the whole stand..."

That's the only time the kid's visage cracked...Elvis bought the whole watermelon stand, bought all those watermelons and took them back to Memphis... 🍉

Elvis spent most of the final months of 1973 in Memphis, where in November he watched a rerun of the NBC-TV "Aloha from Hawaii" satellite show and from December ten through* the sixteenth went again into the Stax recording studio for RCA. Although this session was considerably more satisfying than the one in July- eighteen songs in seven days- in no way did it represent Elvis at his most productive. Or happiest. Still overweight and depressed about the year behind him, many of the songs seemed as autobiographical— and sad—as anything he ever recorded.
Some of the material reflected his general mood, such as in Lany Gatlin's composition, "Help Me," where Elvis literally dropped to his knees in the studio to sing the song.
Others were more specific, as in "Take Good Care of Her" where he seemed to be singing to Priscilla's new es**rt, Mike Stone. Perhaps the saddest of all-and ultimately most pro-phetic-was the mournful "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues".
Three of these songs would be released as singles in the next year and all would be included on his albums. There were up tempo songs as well-including Chuck Berry's rocker, "Prom-ised Land" —but it was the mournful ballads that set the tone and remained most memorable.
Christmas Eve 1973 was not the happiest of times. Again three stockings were hung on the staircase with Linda's name replacing Priscilla's. The usual bounty of gifts were exchanged.
But many of Elvis's presents were still under the tree unopened a week later.
New Year's Eve was quiet, too, as Elvis held another party at Graceland rather than rent a nightclub, and pared the guest list to out thity of one went out an Thou at cham png n, but
Pancho's, a Mexican fast-food takeout place not far away. Elvis and Linda didn't come downstairs to join the party until after eleven.
Elvis finally appeared, freshly shaved and cologned, wearing an all-black fringed "Superfly" outfit, a knee-length coat and a wide-brimmed, floppy hat. Linda looked as if she had spent a lot of time making up and was wearing a silver lamé pants suit with a transparent top. They made one circuit of the room, greeting everyone cordially, then went back upstairs. Total time they were at the party was under fifteen minutes.
In their wake they left a disgruntled and deflated party. "I flew eighteen hundred miles for this?" Joe Esposito grumbled.
"This is the greatest party on earth," said Lamar Fike. "Fun! This is really great."
At midnight, the men started playing cards and the women gathered in front of Elvis's closed-circuit television and waved Happy New Year to him. He had a monitor in his bedroom, but no one knew if he was watching…

Elvis Presley from G.I. Blues - Wooden Heart (1960).
Elvis Presley, the undisputed King of Rock and Roll, had a knack for taking a song and making it his own. Wooden Heart is a prime example. Released in 1960 as part of the soundtrack for the film G.I. Blues, this track is a delightful blend of pop, country, and a touch of German folk, showcasing Presley's versatility.
