Growing up, I loved "B" movies. These were movies usually shown on Saturday afternoons or late at night that were cheaper, a little grittier in subject matter, and often included westerns, film noirs, and adventure films like Tarzan or Maria Montez jungle pictures. These movies may not have starred Jimmy Stewart or Cary Grant, but they had their own fraternity of leaving men -- strong and studly -- who could beat the bad guy and win the lovely leading lady. This week on From Beneath The Hollywood Sign podcast, Nan McNamara Schnebly and I examine the lives and careers of several of these (perhaps) forgotten leading men. THERESA HARRIS was one of the most prolific actresses during the Golden Age of Hollywood. She appeared in over 100 films and shared the screen with every major star in Hollywood. She was beautiful, could sing and dance, and was a very talented actress. Unfortunately, the only roles available to her were those of the maid, cook, waitress, "native" girl, or pr******te. This was the sad fate of people of color back in the days of Old Hollywood. R.I.P. - Donald Sutherland (1935-2024)

I still say to anyone who will listen: One of the biggest Oscar snubs in the history of the Academy Awards was Donald Sutherland not being Oscar-nominated for his shattering performance as Calvin Jarrett in "Ordinary People" (1980).

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. And Hollywood Studio bosses took that to heart. When an actor like CLARK GABLE, GRETA GARBO, or ROCK HUDSON emerged as a mega-star, every studio in town tried to capitalize and create their own version. Often, studios would groom an actor with similar looks and skills to be a “threat” to bigger stars who become difficult to work with, or get older and less appealing, or refuse to appear in assigned films. Most of the stars groomed as a threat to a bigger star usually faded into obscurity, but others learned to get out of the looming shadow of the big star and carved out a career of their own. So in this week's episode of From Beneath The Hollywood Sign, we pay tribute to the stars who got their start by being groomed to replace another star. Classic cinema leading man RICHARD CARLSON is probably best known for several Sci-fi films he made in the 1950s -- most notably "The Creature from the Black Lagoon." But this versatile actor appeared in everything from college comedies to severe dramas to Westerns. He was also a writer and director who made an impact behind the camera. Read all about this long-forgotten star in the latest entry of my blog, From Beneath The Hollywood Sign.
