#OnThisDay we celebrate Bruce Palmer, bassist of the influential folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield. Born on September 9, 1946, Palmer's innovative playing was crucial to the band's distinctive sound. Buffalo Springfield, formed in 1966, launched the careers of Stephen Stills, Neil Young, and Richie Furay. Their brief but impactful existence shaped the folk-rock sound of the late 1960s, and fueled the country rock and singer-songwriter movement in the 1970s. Bruce first met Neil Young in Toronto in the 1960s when he asked Neil to play guitar with the Mynah Birds, a Toronto R&B band fronted by future funk star Rick James. Even after Buffalo Springfield's breakup, Palmer maintained musical connections with his former collaborators touring with Neil Young as his bass player on Young's 1982 Trans tour. In 1986 the original members of Buffalo Sprignfield secretly rehearsed for possible reunion shows, which were filmed for posterity. You can witness here how the original musical chemistry was still strong after nearly 20 years apart. In 1970 Bruce Palmer released his only solo record, 'The Cycle Is Complete' that has become a cult record and influnced a new genearation of folk musicians. Tragically Bruce Palmer passed away in 2004, gone too soon at 58. His legacy serves as a testament to the enduring power of boundary-pushing music.
