SPOTLIGHTING THE BENUE FILMMAKER: PART 2

A filmmaker by virtue of what he or she does rarely needs an introduction when he or she walks into an arena or a function, especially those working in the acting department because they are constantly in front of the cameras.

Those in the profession understand that after having all the talent, your face needs to be known before you can pass for a celebrity. That is why most times actors are known better than the directors or any other technical crew. Typically, if a Kunle Remi or Wole Ojo walks in he will be recognised immediately while it will take some time to notice a Kunle Afolayan who is a producer and director except for people with very keen interest in the film industry.

Now this is not magic, it is the simple fact that these people asides coming up on our screens every now and then in movies also have the privileges of serving as ambassadors of different brands who put them up on billboards in strategic positions in cities and even outskirts of cities, by the roadsides and so on. It is very hard for one not to commit such faces to memory when we see them so often.

Back home in my state Benue, we have so many big and small brands plying their businesses here yet refusing to recognise our talents here to be their brand ambassadors. That's why you will see a big billboard with the face of Yul Edochie campaigning for the Hero beer brand at High Level Roundabout in Makurdi instead of an Akume Akume A or a Lucy Ameh. That's why you will Seun Akindele on an Amstel Malta billboard in Wurukum Roundabout instead of an Apel Orduen or a Ray Adeka .

Let me forget the big brands and come back home, we have small companies owned by Benue indigenes and the question is how many of these people use these talents to campaign for their businesses. Only recently, some transport companies in the State tried using these actors to shoot commercials for their adverts and it worked for them with companies witnessing a rise in patronage.

That's what I am talking about, as a filmmaker Conan Anyamikegh is not supposed to walk the streets of Makurdi and go through the hassle of telling people what he does. People as supposed to readily recognize him and not the other way round. This is one of the conversations that birthed the idea of Bennywood Watch Party (BWP).

SPOTLIGHTING THE BENUE FILMMAKER:
PART 1.

I am moved to write this article because of my bias as a filmmaker. I have practiced in the Nigerian Film Industry for 15 years with my career ofdicially starting on the film set of Sacrifice of Uzoigwe where my brother and friend Shadrach Teryila Ukuma had introduced me to the producers Institute for Christian Drama and Film (ICDAF) in far away Idiroko, Or in State. Before then I was running up and down the towns in Lagos State attending auditions to get a role in the industry.

Since that fateful moment, I never looked back but kept pushing my dream in this career and to God be the glory I have never had cause to regret being a filmmaker.

However, it has never been an easy road and in these tasking 15 years of my career one would still say I am not really successful if you would measure success only in monetary terms. I still do not make the list of household names even though I have been privileged to either work as an actor or Director with very prominent names in the industry.

Many people have told me "Conan, you don't belong here. Your kind of talent does not pay in Benue State just go to Lagos or Abuja or any of the Eastern States and practice ". Well, they say these things out of love and concern for me but they also say them in ignorance.

Benue State has whatever it takes for a filmmaker to thrive, only that bought practitioners and investors have neither utilized these factors nor made efforts to grow the industry. A typical filmmaker in Benue State makes films for the sheer love of it and not to make a living so he hardly goes through the due processes of preproduction, production and preproduction. And mind you, when you don't plan it is said you are planning to fail.

Producers have complained of funding, but there are a lot of investors in the State who are sceptical of investing in the film industry because producers have been unable to draw business plans concerning their films with a proper return on investment.

Filmmaking is a business for those practicing and should put food on the table, but in Benue State there is no resident filmmaker that will tell you he or she is financially stable making films. Only those of consistent in the art will tell you what we go through and how we make ends meet. That not withstanding, this could be a money spinner for us all if we redirect our focus from rushing to make films just out of passion but having an eye to make films that people would want to be a part of.

Executive Producers are business men and money spenders who would want to know exactly how you plan to make money from the film you want them to sponsor. They would also want to know what it is in it for them, and not just give their money like some charity.

A lot of practitioners complain about the government's poor involvement in the film sector but truth is we have not shown the government how lucrative a business filmmaking is so it can not just keep sinking money. All creative enterprise like filmmaking thrive 50 percent on proceeds gotten from Corporate Social Responsibility of Corporate Bodies, but in our case the resident Companies have poorly executed these responsibilities either because practitioners are not tapping into these opportunities or because the companies are trying to be negatively smart by not giving back to their host community.
