In a recent legal brief filed before Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Appeal Commission, state Attorney General, Dana Nessel argues that residents fired from their jobs for cannabis use outside the workplace are still eligible by law for unemployment benefits.

Nessel and Solicitor General Fadwa A. Hammoud filed the brief with the commission on Monday, August 9, over three cases in which ex-employees are facing the possible loss of unemployment benefits after being fired solely for cannabis use during their personal time. In a statement, the attorney general said, “Ma*****na was not used on the job or on the employers’ premises, nor did it impair the employee during work hours.”

Michigan’s Attorney General argues ma*****na use does not disqualify unemployment eligibility as more cases arise of people losing their unemployment aid.

In its fourth purchase of 2021, Hydrofarm closed on the acquisition of Canadian nutrient company Greenstar Plant Products, Inc. for a purchase price of $83 million.

Hydrofarm funded the deal through a combination of cash and an existing credit facility. Greenstar will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hydrofarm.

In its fourth purchase of the year, the Pennsylvania-based Hydrofoam bought Canadian plant nutrients firm Greenstar Plant Products for $83 million.

In its latest World Drug Report, the United Nations Office on Crime and Drugs calls for a comprehensive ban on advertising, promoting, or sponsoring cannabis. The report argues that a ban is necessary to protect public health interests over business interests.

The concern is that a widespread belief that cannabis isn’t harmful despite increasing potency is “associated with a variety of health and other harms.”

Applications by Charlotte’s Web Holdings Inc. and Irwin Naturals seeking to sell CBD h**p extracts as dietary supplements have been denied by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The agency said it rejected the applications because CBD is an approved drug and, therefore, excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement and that both applications failed to show that the extract meets the “reasonably expected to be safe under the conditions of use.”

Cannabis investment firm RIV Capital Inc. has signed a deal with The Hawthorne Collective, a newly-formed cannabis-focused subsidiary of ScottsMiracle-Gro Company, for the purchase of a $150 million unsecured convertible note from RIV Capital.

The investment is expected to close near August 24. The Agreement establishes RIV Capital as The Hawthorne Collective’s preferred vehicle for investments not currently under the purview of The Hawthorne Gardening Company.
