It was my first trip to Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island). What an honour to be among the co-facilitators for the University of Queensland’s Anthropology Society (UQAS) Minjerribah Writers Retreat 2024.

We learnt about different plants and animals, poetry, and had the chance to walk in other people’s shoes. My session was entitled ‘Writing to Preserve and Transmit Culture.’

Minjerribah is a beautiful Island in the Moreton Bay region of South East Queensland. I had the opportunity to speak to one of the locals, an aunty, who informed me that the Island is great for retirement. I might take her up on that suggestion.

Thanks to UQAS and everyone who made the day eventful and successful.

Beyond the alluring mirage, Timbuktu's whispers echo through the shifting sands. My essay, written in Acoli, delves into its captivating narrative, from the brilliance of its golden age as a centre of learning to the realities of natural and human-made destruction. Join me in reclaiming Timbuktu's rightful place in African history and highlighting the importance of safeguarding its legacy for future generations.
