A joint venture combining chemistry, biology and engineering expertise seems to be causing quite a stir. An article by T. E. Mallouk, USA, and T. J. Huang, China, now published on Early View in our sister journal AngewandteChemie, describes the ultrasonic propulsion of rod-shaped nanomotors inside living HeLa cells. This study opens a new door to those investigating subcellular components and the response of cells to internal mechanical forces, not to mention its potential biomedical applications: http://bit.ly/MMVrXh The video attached demonstrates very active gold nanorods internalized inside HeLa cells in an acoustic field:
