SAILING FROM BYZANTIUM

My family heritage is very important to me and the connection to a deep love for Hellenism had been fostered by my parents from an early age. Our ancestral family towns had a long and rich connection to many periods of Greek history which fueled my interest in extensive study of all things Greek. My Papou Constantine was the first of my refugee grandparents to leave what wa

s to become the graveyard of Hellenism and the Greek Orthodox faith in the lands of Anatolia and Thrace. His sailing away from Constantinople for the promise of America in 1909 was a wise move. I dedicate HELLENIC HERALD to the spirit of the diaspora Greeks scattered to the corners of the earth.

ANCIENT GREEK TRIREME 'OLYMPIAS' IN THE MODERN HELLENIC NAVY

Olympias is a reconstruction of an ancient Athenian trireme and an important example of experimental archaeology. It is also a commissioned ship in the Hellenic Navy of Greece, the only commissioned vessel of its kind in any of the world's navies.
Olympias was constructed from 1985 to 1987 by a shipbuilder in Piraeus. The bronze bow ram weighs 200 kg. It is a copy of an original ram now in the Piraeus archaeological museum. The ship was built from Douglas fir and Virginia oak. The keel is of iroko hardwood. In 1987 exercise crewed by 170 volunteer oarsmen and oarswomen. Olympias achieved a speed of 9 knots (17 km/h) and was able to perform 180 degree turns within one minute, in an arc no wider than two and a half (2.5) ship-lengths. These results, achieved with an inexperienced, mixed crew, suggest that ancient historians like Thucydides were not exaggerating about the capabilities of triremes. In 2004 she was used to transport the Olympic Flame ceremonially from the port of Keratsini to the main port of Piraeus, as the Olympic Torch Relay approached Athens for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

The Sultanate of Absurdistan (formerly known as Turkey) currency is set to replace the Lira. The new national currency will be known as the IOU!

There has always been a method to the madness of Turkey’s leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who cut interest rates even while the value of the Turkish lira vanished on foreign exchange markets. The meth…

Journalist Uzay Bulut upholds truth and justice for the oppressed minorities in her homeland of Turkey by defying the autocratic government. God bless this woman!

Endangering her own safety and living in self-imposed exile is the sacrifice Uzay Bulut makes as she continues to unearth and publish articles on Turkey’s genocidal past and continued human rights violations.

TURKEY TRAVEL ADVISORY - US STATE DEPARTMENT

Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Turkey. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas.

Security forces have detained tens of thousands of individuals, including U.S. citizens, for alleged affiliations with terrorist organizations based on scant or secret evidence and grounds that appear to be politically motivated. U.S. citizens have also been subject to travel bans that prevent them from departing Turkey. Participation in demonstrations not explicitly approved by the Government of Turkey, as well as criticism of the government (including on social media) can result in arrest.
