Tibetan monks return to Hancock College to create sand mandala as part of nationwide tour

For the last year, Lobsang Jamyang has toured the United States with monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery to raise support for a community of refugee monks living in southern India. On Monday, the group arrived at Hancock College for a four-day visit — their fourth since 2013 — to share Tibetan Buddhist teachings and authentic traditions through chanting, sacred performances and construction of the intricate sand mandala. Righetti head football coach Tony Payne talks about preparing for first year at alma mater

Tony Payne graduated from Righetti High School in 1995, and played two years on the varsity team as an offensive tackle. He returns to the campus this year as the school's head football coach. Joe Bailey sat down and talked with Payne in our Santa Maria office about his feelings on returning to his alma mater, the off season, his preparation for the upcoming season and how he believes the Warriors will play this year. Karlos and Jose Balderas fight Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles

Santa Maria resident Karlos Balderas is 4-0 in his professional boxing career. He will try to stretch his perfect string to five Saturday. Balderas, 22, will face 26-year-old Pedro Lopez at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in a lightweight bout. Lopez, a San Diego native who lives in Tijuana, Mexico now, is 7-3-1. He has not fought since February of 2017. Karlos' older brother, Jose Balderas, who will turn 23 on June 16, is also set to box at the Staples Center Saturday. Karlos and Jose Balderas will fight on the same undercard. Jose is scheduled to go against Tijuana resident Luis Montellano, 21, (0-1-1). That bantamweight fight is scheduled for four rounds. The Santa Maria Elks Rodeo is less than a week away now. The Minetti Mini Rodeo entertains thousands of area students on Thursday morning and the big show kicks off later that night. And both shows have new representation. Miss Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and Miss Mini Rodeo were named on Sunday - Ashley Singh and Hannah Palin, respectively - and Elliott Stern talks a little about each new role. There was a time, in the not too distant past, when getting your “Bell Rung” was seen as a badge of honor. After taking a hard hit to the head, woozy athletes were regularly told to “shake it off” or “walk it off.” Chris Nowinski hopes those days are gone forever. He’s doing everything he can to make sure of it. Nowinski, in conjunction with Dignity Health Central Coast and its network of local hospitals — Marian Medical Center, French Hospital Medical Center and Arroyo Grande Community Hospital — led a symposium Saturday at Arroyo Grande High School about the dangers of Concussive Brain Injuries, more commonly referred to as concussions.
