Malawi’s recent presidential pardon of a convicted leader of an international wildlife trafficking syndicate has drawn widespread criticism from conservationists, anti-corruption advocates, and governance experts.

Among the 21 prisoners pardoned by President Lazarus Chakwera over the Easter holiday was Chinese national Yunhua Lin. Lin, considered a kingpin of one of Africa’s most notorious illegal wildlife trafficking networks, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2021 after being convicted of multiple offences including the possession and trafficking of pangolin scales, elephant ivory, hippo teeth, and rhino horn.

CLIMATE CHANGE THREAT: Surrounding communities along the earth road connecting area 23 and Ngwenya market in area 24 have turned a river demacating the two areas into a dumping site for baby dippers, died livestock and other trash collected from their homes.
