'Shine' from Makeover by Laurie Bolger (@lauriebolger_) 💗✨
Some women hand down bits of cloth a decent teapot heart-shaped things
wartime irons so heavy they could hold open the door
I’ve been handed wedding rings and the force to hold
a whole house above my head —
Mum’s rings don’t fit now
says her hands are as knobbly
as the trees that lined the street she first held me in —
Mum lost her favourite colander in the pub kitchen
straining the sticky sweet pineapple to go with the cheese
on sticks —
So leave me the power in your hips
so when I think of you
I think of the sink as a lake you could dive in
and if I’m left that pie dish
I want it full of all the things they said about us
leave me the measurements of a kitchen, Mum
I want to live without weighing things —

'The cartographer and I have had a tiff:
I don't appreciate his profession,
my slapdash approach to boundaries is troubling,
the distance the crow flies is not the same as walking.
But that's just fine because I
am more interested in flying than walking.' - Commissioning a Map, from ACCESSIONING 🏛️by Charlotte Wetton

Book launch for "Milk Snake"
This is the booklaunch for our newest poetry pamphlet: "Milk Snake" by Toby Buckley. The event features a reading from Toby plus Q&A with our founding editor Emma Dai'an Wright.
You can order a copy of the pamphlet here: https://theemmapress.com/shop/poetry/pamphlets/milk-snake/
The book's blurb:
In Milk Snake, Toby Buckley invites us to look at the world from a slightly different angle, where small things become unsettling if you look closely enough. The poet explores queerness, displacement and trauma through clear-voiced, deceptively gentle poems about fishermen, maggots and bees.
Book launch for "The Fabulanarchist Luxury Uprising" by Jack Houston
This is the booklaunch for our newest poetry pamphlet: "The Fabulanarchist Luxury Uprising" by Jack Houston. The event features a reading from Jack plus Q&A with our founding editor Emma Dai'an Wright.
You can order a copy of the pamphlet here: https://theemmapress.com/shop/poetry/the-fabulanarchist-luxury-uprising/
The book's blurb: Playful, formal, satirical and tender, the poems in The Fabulanarchist Luxury Uprising are wildly wide-ranging. Jack Houston whisks the reader through meditations on family life, the teachings of Lucretius, the sexual potential of Captain Barnacles, and dreams of a socialist utopia, managing to be both deeply weird and touching.
In his debut pamphlet, Houston draws out and scrutinises the mundanities of life, showing how they can form part of something much bigger. His poems aim to awaken the capacity for revolution within us all, even if it only gets us as far as the roundabout in the local playpark.
Big announcement for us! We are so proud to be part of Puffin Books #worldofstories initiative along with six other amazing indie publishers! 🌟
Libraries at 152 schools across the country will be receiving HUGE packages filled with amazing books and we're thrilled that some of ours will be amongst them 💚📚📖
Book launch for "The Fox's Wedding" by Rebecca Hurst
This is the booklaunch for our newest poetry pamphlet: "The Fox's Wedding" by Rebecca Hurst. The event features a reading from Rebecca, supported by fellow poet Siân Thomas and Mariah Whelan, and a Q&A between Rebecca and our founding editor Emma Dai'an Wright.
You can order a copy of the pamphlet here: https://theemmapress.com/shop/art-squares/the-foxs-wedding/
Rebecca Hurst’s debut pamphlet is woven through with fairy tales, folklore and landscape. She uses the natural world, family mythology and the theory of fairy tales to unpack, embroider, and explode traditional tales and tropes, exploring themes of voice, concealment, and transformation.
Prickling with magic and spells, the poems in The Fox’s Wedding lead us down a twisty path to find – what? A prince made of needles? A cursed box? A golden key? Take care and keep your wits about you; if you’re lucky you might just find your way home.
Guest poets:
Siân Thomas is poet in residence for Ashdown Forest in Sussex. Her pamphlet Ovid's Echo and collection Ashdown are both published by Paekakariki Press and her work has appeared widely in magazines and anthologies. She teaches creative writing both online and in Sussex and Kent, and presents The Poetry Bath on Wildhart Radio.
Mariah Whelan is a poet and teacher. Her novel-in-sonnets the love i do to you won the AM Heath Prize and was an Oxford Poetry Library Book of the Month. Her writing has been shortlisted for The Bridport Prize, The Streetcake Experimental Writing Prize and Highly Commended in The Poetry Book Society Student Poetry Prize and The Artlyst and The Poetry Society Art to Poetry Award. She teaches at Homerton College, Cambridge and University College London. She is one of the co-founders and editors at bath magg.
