On 19 September 2025, about 30 people including police and residents confronted Malaysian Animal Welfare Association (MAWA) shelter after receiving a complaint that the shelter waste was being washed into the river.

In a social media post, the shelter owner clarified that the river was polluted before the shelter was established and that their only connection to the river is a PVC pipe for draining excess rainwater.

On 22 September, the local council served a notice asking the shelter to evacuate the land immediately due to alleged smell and disturbance. Lembaga Urusan Air Selangor (LUAS) also arrived to collect water samples from the river for testing.

🔹 On 24 September 2025, the shelter owner was invited to the office of Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Dusun Tua, YB Datuk Wira Johan, to discuss matters concerning the evacuation. After hearing the shelter owner’s explanation about MAWA’s purpose and
operations, YB Datuk Wira Johan promptly contacted Majlis Perbandaran Kajang’s (MPKj) Head of Enforcement to halt any further action until a meeting with the Mayor can be held to discuss humane solutions for the shelter dogs.

On 18 September in Ipoh, a man was caught on video chasing and beating his sister’s dog with an iron rod. The dog later died from his injuries despite treatment.

Today, the 23-year-old, M. Thineshkumar, pleaded guilty and was fined RM20,000 under the Animal Welfare Act 2015. SAFM (NGO) expressed that a fine isn’t enough and is calling for mandatory jail time to send a clear message against animal cruelty.
