In Part 1 of our series adequately titled "Apocalypse Now" we focus on Creativity and look into the critical role Artificial Intelligence is playing by reshaping our societal and interpersonal underpinnings as well as our fundamental definitions of consciousness and reality.

Additionally, we'll look at some of the tools allowing creators to fashion their imaginations into literal and graphical reality.

From artist Von Wolfe to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, we’ll discover the basics of LLMs and Diffusion Models and what this means for the future of Art in general.

We also turn our lens toward the fashion industry and deconstruct how A.I. is currently being accessed and utilized—even by some of you, dear readers—to both fabulous and terrifying effect.

This is a pretty wild topic. And whilst the topic itself has matured, the technology has only just begun to showcase its potential.

Join us as we deep-dive into the wild world of Artificial Intelligence and learn how the world of fashion will never be the same. Live on our website. Link in bio.

The team at .style.series have formally announced a rebrand, removing "Seattle" from their name, but maintaining their local focus with an international scope. According to their recent post:

"Even though we are still in our growing phase, we are envisioning The Style Series to become a space for the next generation of fashion—accessible to anyone who loves it and wants to be a part of it, which is different than Vogue and other fashion media platforms that only focus on infamous designers and the same circle of celebrities (no shade intended, we love these publications). The truth is, there is a need for more exposure in the fashion industry, not only in Seattle, but around the world. And we want this platform to be a space for talent to be seen, noticed, and applauded—and, more importantly, a space for new voices to be heard. We plan to deliver this in the most authentic, real way that we can."

Hosts & launched Seattle Style Series in 2022 and have grown their audience considerably.

In addition, The Style Series have partnered with editor-in-chief Chele Sellman to expand the scope of new media coverage for both publications. Chele is the founder of several startups including the newly announced Seattle Fashion Council, and while details remain scarce, the future remains bright for fashion in the Northwest.

We look forward to hearing good news of their fruitful partnership in the seasons to come.

Have you ever imagined what a Luly Yang SS24 haute couture collection would look like? Or have you ever imagined a fashion editorial with Lisa Marie Couture photographed in the style of Richard Avedon? Well, there's an app for that. Several in fact. And with them, a host of questions about the coming AI revolution that has already impacted the fashion world, for better and worse.

In our Summer 2023 Issue, fashion editor A.M. has a look at Artificial Intelligence, from large language models to hallucinatory states, and approaches the question of creativity from first principles. Is AI merely a parlor trick to be used and easily discarded? Will it render human creativity entirely obsolete? What are the ethical ramifications of employing copyrighted work in data sets? How can one compete when corporations monopolize the underlying technologies?

More importantly, what does AI mean for our local fashion community? Can AI predict the future by examining the past? Should we use AI to supplement our creative process? Many questions. And hopefully many more fruitful discussions.

Read all about the intersection of Fashion + Artificial Intelligence in our Summer 2023 Issue, available now in print & digital editions.

"I don't want to hear about war all the time. But I have to because it's part of my world," Parker, now 18, reflects. "I would say we as humans have a lot of potential. We definitely do, because with this new generation, I think we're open-minded and can make a bigger change. I think we have more hope, too." "Joy Egbejimba was a friend to Seattle Fashion Collective. More importantly, she was a visionary leader in every sense of the word. And on a personal note, she was my friend and mentor offering advice when I was too young and foolish to know any better...And while she is deeply missed, she will forever be celebrated for the great light she brought into our world."

SFC founder and editor A.M. remembers the many times Joy brought her irrepressible light into our lives, sharing past memories and lessons learned along the way. Please take a moment to remember Joy's kindness as well as her clear impact within our local and international fashion communities. Feel invited to view our Celebration of Life. And send love and kindness to her family during this difficult time.

“I consider Seattle now my home. I’ve met incredible people—models, designers, makeup artists, photographers—and I've been looking forward to every opportunity to work with them. It's wonderful to see that there's so many people supporting each other. I can see that everybody's tagging each other on social media. I’m like, 'Oh my God, they’re really working as a team!' They don't even know each other. But that's so cool. People in Seattle just like supporting other people's work."

For the next installment in our Spotlight series, former Tijuana-based fashion designer Iván Delfín opens up about his life and career, from his early days as an intern and working for Benito Santos, to owning a studio in Tijuana and then San Diego, to the impact that The Pause had and is still having within our community, to why Seattle is an incredible city for fashion, and much more. "It was easy not to care where your garment was made—or under what conditions—when everyone from Macy’s to Zara fed you beautiful campaign images of happy and wealthy Americans buying more with less. But as with so many truths, what is seen can never be unseen. What’s left, then, in the wreckage of our lost innocence, stands as a rallying cry desperately pleading with us to do better."

Op-ed from A.M. coming in hot.

Much has been said on the topic of sustainability in fashion. But as with so many things, it's worth our continued investigations into how we can make better decisions that positively impact our future.

In the latest edition of we interview fashion designer and optician and follow their journey throughout the pandemic. Their current label has specialized in dark fashion and evening wear since its inception in 2017.  However, as a result of the pandemic and unforeseen developments, the line has been placed on hold.  In its stead, we’ve witnessed the reemergence of a creative artist and skilled technician whose personal victories rival their professional ones.

Born in Seattle, Hollis spent most of their developing years in a small town in Eastern Washington.  From backyard battles against imaginary dragons to high school victories in honors classes, there was little Hollis couldn’t overcome.

But an understated, nebulous feeling emerged, hampering each new development and marring victories with an anxiety that brought forward momentum to a crashing halt.  Despite encouragement from friends and family, as well as the fashion community at large, nothing, it seemed, could quell the voice of doubt that gnawed at their peace like a splinter in the mind.  Until one day, when the damming of emotion could bear no further restraint, Hollis finally uttered the words they had waited decades to say aloud.

Last month, produced the 2022 fashion show at LeMay in Tacoma during one of the hottest months on record—and we're not simply addressing the weather. Writer shares her experience.

"Elegance.  Luxury.  Innovation.  Design. Did you picture a clothing line or a Cadillac? On the surface, apparel and automobiles seem to have little in common.  Hemlines and headlights don’t mix.  Blouses and brakes live in different worlds.  But the stark dichotomy begins to blur when what fashionistas love about fashion is juxtaposed with what car fanatics love about cars."

22/08/2022

In the Editor's Letter from our Summer '22 Issue, we dive into the landscape of both national and international headlines and examine how our local independent fashion industry fits into the larger narrative.

"This season marks a significant shift, both in the fashion industry at large and for Seattle Fashion Collective at home. There’s something undeniable in the air. While the media landscape reminds us of our constant state-of-emergency, the flipped-side of the coin tells of a planet poised to begin an era of increased abundance where the quality of life for everyone will benefit from innovations in energy, tech, production, logistics, automation, and in terms of fashion, the promise of a truly sustainable era. Is this the inevitable arch of history or a hyper-capitalist-fever-dream?"

"Our Summer ’22 Issue focuses on identity, both personal and professional, within the greater fashion landscape. We ask difficult questions and seek meaningful actions. How does fashion connect with our region’s continued health and wellbeing? What visions currently captivate us and inspire growth and purpose? How do we communicate our intrinsic value and identity to a world so often at odds with itself? And more personally, how can we best serve our community with timely and relevant coverage?"

"The proof is in the issue, from Walace Style, Sskein, Paychi Guh, Molly Ray Parfums, Hollis Hamilton, and many others. All of whom faced incredible odds and have come through the other side with a dignity and grace befitting an Olympic medalist. And all of whom collectively add to the rich beauty and independent spirit of our now thriving industry."
