⚠️ An Air Quality Action Day for Ozone has been declared for Tuesday, June 18th, 2024.

Sensitive individuals, including the very young, the elderly, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should avoid strenuous activities during the afternoon and early evening hours. Widespread high pressure is expected to dominate the weather pattern through the end of the week, allowing for hot temperatures, sunny skies, and winds out of the south-southwest. High temperatures on Tuesday will increase into the low- to mid-90s along with minimal cloud cover, causing ozone levels to rise into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) category along the I-95 corridor and in central and northern New Jersey. Fine particulate levels are expected to remain in the moderate category along the I-95 corridor and regions north.

May is the statistical peak month for severe thunderstorms. We enter the month with a full head of steam as April goes into the books with the second-most confirmed tornadoes of any April on record, including our first EF-4+ of the year and a tornado in Alaska! The numbers are still preliminary, but it's unlikely we'll catch #1.

Tornadoes are, however, just one severe weather metric. Overall, it was only slightly above average.

28/04/2024

Here's a look at approximate areas we'll be surveying today. Additional surveys will be needed in the coming days.

28/04/2024

Damage surveys are still in progress today. Our 5 survey teams are finding evidence consistent with at least EF-3 strength in some areas. The preliminary ratings will be shared as soon as we collect and analyze the damage information. Given the length of these tornado paths, these rating will take some time to complete. We will provide additional details as soon as we can!

They say that you should never meet your heroes. On this, the anniversary of Craig Allen On-Air becoming Chief Meteorologist of WCBS Newsradio 880 880, here is the moment that I met mine:

In the pre-Internet era, it was the first time (at least for me) that a face was put to the iconic voice. I almost fell out off my seat when I saw radio on TV.

(Incidentally, Frank Field was a congregant of my grandfather)

WILDFIRE ALERT: Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area & Worthington State Forest

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service and the National Park Service are in unified command on a 5-acre wildfire burning in the area of Old Mine Road and which is visible from Interstate 80 in Warren County. The fire has been named the “Old Mine Wildfire.”

The fire originated on National Park Service property and is believed to be human caused.

No road closures are in effect.

The Forest Fire Service is on scene with ground crews, along with aviation assets including a Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) that can drop up to 800 gallons of water at a time, and an observation helicopter.

Earlier today, Forest Fire Service crews conducted a prescribed burn more than a mile away from the origin of the Old Mine Wildfire on state property managed by Worthington State Forest. The prescribed burn was immediately ceased to allow Forest Fire Service resources to respond rapidly to the nearby Old Mine Wildfire. The Forest Fire Service confirms the prescribed burn neither caused nor impacted the Old Mine Wildfire in Worthington State Forest because the wind direction at the prescribed burn was opposite from the wind direction at the Old Mine Wildfire.

An update on the Old Mine Wildfire is expected at approximately 9 p.m. today.

There are several media reports regarding the exact epicenter and magnitude of this morning's earthquake. The exact information is still being nailed-down by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Preliminary info is M4.7-4.8, centered in Somerset, Hunterdon, or Warren County. Again, data is initial and still being narrowed-down. You can do your part to help narrow it down on the USGS's website at https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ma74/tellus

Emergency officials are pleading with the public to only call 911 if you are in imminent danger. Do not call for information.

As with earthquakes, themselves, aftershocks cannot be predicted. The likelihood of aftershocks is unknown. In the event of an aftershock, seek cover beneath a table or in a doorway.

Watch extended into . Fulton and DeKalb Counties, which include the City of Atlanta, as well as Henry County constitute the eastern extreme of the expanded Watch. It is in effect until 3AM EDT.

Atlanta is by far the largest population center affected, so far. What's worse, is that it will be happening while most people are sleeping.

Please keep multiple redundant alert methods active to wake you in the event of a Warning.

The hatched area is where the risk of EF-2+ tornadoes is greater than 10%.

❄️ 𝙃𝘼𝙋𝙋𝙔 𝘼𝙉𝙉𝙄𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙎𝘼𝙍𝙔! ❄️

While I'm not quite old enough to remember 'The Great Blizzard of 1888' (though, sometimes I feel that old), I have fond memories of 1993's 'Storm of the Century.' All sorts of crazy numbers came out of that one. My favorite remains having 𝙏𝙒𝙊 consecutive snow days! There's also the 𝙏𝙒𝙊 baby booms, including the one induced by the record-low barometric pressures. As for the second one, nine months later, well... let's try to keep this thread clean 😏
