The incident occurred on Thursday night around 19:00 hours in Chifubu Township's Kamba area.

Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba said the report was filed by Lydia Chisenga, 25, of Chifubu Township, on behalf of her aunt, Gertrude Matanda, 40.

Mr Mweemba said Ms Chisenga narrated that the house caught fire following a gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen.

The victim sustained burns on her legs, hands, and forehead, while her 18-year-old niece suffered burns on her knees and hands.

"Brief facts are that the victim was cooking outside the house with her niece when they heard an explosion in the kitchen," Mr Mweemba said.

Both victims were rushed to Ndola Teaching Hospital, where they were admitted in stable condition.

"The matter was reported at Chifubu Police Station, and officers visited the scene, processed it, and confirmed that the fire was caused by a gas cylinder explosion," he said.

Mr Mweemba added that neighbors managed to extinguish the fire before it spread to other rooms.

LET US PRAY

Gracious Lord, we bow our hearts and pray.

Please clear our paths today as we walk along the highways and byways of this gift called life.

Hold our hands as we sometimes forget that we never walk alone.

Let them that have ears let us hear Your direction and lift the veil so that blind minds can see. We ask all these things so that the works of the Lord may be glorified.

Amen.

OUR FRIDAY MORNING BIBLE VERSE

Good Morning ,

Here is our Word for today:

Verse: Ephesians 4:32

‘Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.’

- Unforgiveness is one thing that keeps us stuck in the past.

- When we move past our own hurt and start being kind, our lives change.

- In the process, we can also be kind to ourselves and forgive ourselves.

- Then our lives can be a blessing and we can dispense His grace to others.

PRAYER: Lord, I choose to extend forgiveness to all who have done wrong to me. I want to enjoy the freedom that forgiveness can bring and I want to be a source of blessing and kindness to others. Amen.

Have a wonderful Friday,
Kind Regards

THE love for a soft life has landed a Lusaka youth in jail for three years after he was found guilty of theft and fraudulent false accounting involving over K100,000.

https://www.facebook.com/100064560977290/posts/1046147284213961/

While working as a stores clerk at the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) at the age of 28, Eric Ndhlovu of Lilayi betrayed the trust of his employers.

Ndhlovu stole and engaged in fraudulent false accounting involving over K100,000 from the institution, using part of the proceeds to purchase a Toyota Mark II.

However, his actions have cost him both his freedom and the car.

Lusaka senior resident magistrate Trevor Kasanda sentenced Ndhlovu to three years in prison and ruled that the State can recover the stolen K108,000.

"I have entered a statutory judgment. The State is at liberty to recover the K108,000," Magistrate Kasanda stated.

In this case, Ndhlovu was accused of forging payment instructions for staff allowances at FIC and presenting the forged documents to the bank.

He faced over 40 counts of theft by a public servant, forgery, uttering false documents, fraudulent false accounting, and money laundering.

The allegations revealed that between May 9, 2022, and April 10, 2022, Ndhlovu forged a payment instruction for staff allowances amounting to K8,950.

The forged document falsely appeared to have been issued and authorised by the FIC.

Further, he presented the forged letter of instruction for K8,950 to a banker at Investrust Bank for payment.

In additional counts, he allegedly forged several other staff allowance documents and presented them to the bank.

Ndhlovu was also accused of purchasing a Toyota Mark II suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Although he pleaded not guilty, the court found him with a case to answer and placed him on his defense.

Magistrate Kasanda ruled that the allegations against Ndhlovu were proven.

“Even if there was no direct evidence of someone seeing the accused forging the documents, he is the one who presented them. Witnesses identified him as the person who submitted the documents to various banks,” Magistrate Kasanda said.

The court found as a fact that Ndhlovu forged the documents to defraud the FIC.

"I am satisfied that the K108,000 was stolen by the accused," the magistrate added.

It was also established that Ndhlovu used the stolen funds to purchase the Toyota Mark II.

A ZANACO banker testified that multiple transactions were made in Ndhlovu’s account during the period he acquired the vehicle.

“Deposits and cash withdrawals occurred during the period he purchased the vehicle, including K8,950 on June 10, 2022, and K5,000 on June 13, 2022. These and other transactions were linked to the FIC account held at Investrust Bank,” Magistrate Kasanda said.

The court further found that forgery had been proven, with Ndhlovu benefiting from stolen funds.

“He was fully aware that the money withdrawn by him and transferred to his account belonged to his employer, the Financial Intelligence Centre. However, instead of fulfilling his duty as an agent of the FIC at Investrust Bank, he exploited his position and devised mechanisms to forge documents and withdraw funds for personal use,” the magistrate said.

In mitigation, his lawyer pleaded for leniency, ssaying that her client is a youthful first offender, a father to a 12-month-old baby, and a caregiver to his blind brother.

“The convict is 31 years old, still youthful, and capable of contributing to society. Throughout the trial, he expressed remorse for his actions and now seeks leniency from this honorable court,” she said.

For the theft by servant charges, Ndhlovu was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment with hard labor and fined K25,000 for money laundering.

He will also serve three years for fraudulent false accounting.

All sentences will run concurrently.

TWO lawmakers yesterday testified in defence of their Lumezi counterpart Munir Zulu whom they said never committed any crime after making utterances which the State deems seditious.

https://www.facebook.com/100064560977290/posts/1046139710881385/

Lunga Member of Parliament Augustine Katotobwe and his Chilubi counterpart Mulenga Fube separately testified that Mr Zulu did not commit a crime but raised alarm over some criminalities that prevailed in the country.

In his testimony, Mr Katotobwe said Mr Zulu’s words were never meant to incite citizens but to alert President Hakainde Hichilema about some vices prevailing at that time such as alleged abduction.

He said the statement in issue , which was made by Mr Zulu during a press briefing, was a call on authorities to attend to grievances to express concerned about various issues, like the alleged abduction of Petauke MP Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda.

“Everything he stated in those utterances, is also to equip the presidency with full knowledge of the catastrophic consequences of leaving such important national issues resolved in the best interest of our people of Zambia,” he said.

This is in a case Mr Zulu is charged with three counts of seditious practices after he allegedly made a statement which linked the Government to the abduction of Mr Banda.

He denied the allegations before Lusaka magistrate Faides Hamundu and he is currently on his defence after being found with a case.

Yesterday, Mr Katotobwe, 56, who is one of the 50 witnesses Mr Zulu is supposed to bring, narrated that last May, there was a press briefing focused on Mr Banda’s disappearance.

He said several lawmakers at the press briefing who spoke include Mr Zulu who explained the disappearance of “honourable Jay Jay Banda”.

“To the best of my knowledge, I recall honourable Zulu stating that the President, his Excellency Hakainde Hichilema must bring back honourable Jay Jay Banda, dead or alive”.

Mr Katotobwe said Mr Zulu was within his rights as an elected lawmaker to speak.

At this point, defence lawyer Boniface Chiwala informed the witness that the State alleged that some of the things Mr Zulu said at the presser amount to seditious practices and the words had potential to cause disaffection among the people of Zambia.

“What is your comment?” Mr Chiwala said.

Mr Katotobwe said Mr Zulu is a bonafide lawmaker who has taken oath to protect the Constitution pay allegiance to the President of Zambia and was therefore within his rights to say what he did.

“He was perfectly within his rights to call upon the Head of State, President Hakainde Hichilema, in light of the disappearance of Honourable Jay Jay Banda, who by virtual of being an MP, is not an ordinary citizen”.

“The statement being referred to had little or no impact in that respect, except for a handful of us who are civic leaders who were happy with the utterances on assumption that this could trigger a permanent solution to these vices which were seemingly taking root.

And Mr Fube said Mr Zulu and the other lawamkers merely wanted authorities to address the lawlessness exhibited by some ruling UPND cadres who threatened to harm former President Edgar Lungu by “threatening to circumcise him”.

“Our desire to have that presser on May 26, 2024 was to bring to the attention, mainly to the President, and institutions charged with the duty to maintain law and order in the country”.

A WITNESS read Whatsapp messages exchanged between r**e charged prophet John Nundwe alias John General and the woman he is accused of ra**ng.

https://www.facebook.com/100064560977290/posts/1046084494220240/

A cyber security expert testified that in one of the 11 messages, the woman sent a WhatsApp message to Mr Nundwe saying she needed a baby, and in response, Mr Nundwe said "Bwela tupange (come we make)

Jeff Sitali, a Cyber security analyst-incidence response from Zambia Information and Communications Authority (ZICTA) said Whatsapp message was one of those extracted from Mr Nundwe’s iPhone 13 pro max.

He was testifying in a case Mr Nundwe,52, is accused of ra**ng a 27-year-old married woman, fake name Chansa, on November 22, 2022 at her house in Lusaka.

The alleged r**e happened after the woman asked for prayers so that she can conceive.

During trial yesterday, prosecutor Joe Phiri said the State was ready to proceed with one witness.

In his testimony, Mr Sitali said on January 10, 2024, ZICTA received a police request for the authority to conduct a forensic examination on an IPhone 13 pro max belonging John Nundwe.

“The request was to retrieve deleted Whatsapp messages and voice notes for conversations between the owners of the device Mr John Nundwe with a cell phone number which ends with 5351, and a Chansa with a number which ends with 7884”.

He said police also wanted information on the location of the iPhone on Wednesday 22, November, 2023 between 13:00 and 14:00 plus any other information in relation to the conversations.

The witness said he proceeded to carry out a forensic examination on the device using magnet axiom forensic tool.

Mr Sitali, who has a bachelor's degree in Information Technology-with a major in computer security and software engineering, said he extracted the information and processed it.

“I extracted 11 WhatsApp messages between John Nundwe and Chansa and presented the messages in my digital forensics report”.

At this point, Mr Phiri asked the witness to read the extracted Whatsapp messages.

He said the first message was sent to Nundwe’s phone by Malita on October 17, October, 2022 at 12:18hours.

“There was no message displayed, the message could have been deleted”.

On the same day at 12:19, Chansa sent another message but again, the same was not displayed.

“The third message again was sent by Chansa on October 27, 2022, at 17:07. And the contents of that message are ‘Dady, what can I do for me to have a child, plus [to mean please]".

Mr Sitali said on the same day at 17:08, Chansa sent another message to Nundwe which read "I need a child, Dady, pliz".

“The fifth message was sent by John Nundwe with mobile number ending with 5351 on December 15, 2022 at 14:16, which read "Bwela tupange".

On December 15, 2022 and November 21, 2023, Malita sent messages to Nundwe but the text could not be displayed in the system.

Mr Sitali said on November 22, 2023 around 12:16, Malita made two Whatsapp audio and video calls to Nundwe but the same went unanswered.

“Why do some messages have no contents in the report?” Mr Phiri asked the witness who said “They could have been deleted by the sender” or placed on disappearing timer.

In cross examination, Mr Sitali told defence lawyer Yokonia Daka of the 11 extracted messages, Nundwe only sent one to Malita.

“Are you able to tell with certainty if messages were deleted or there was a disappearing setting?” Mr Daka asked the witness who said he cannot.

The lawyer then asked Mr Sitali if his report has any evidence suggesting that r**e might or might not have been committed by Nundwe.

“It's not in the report because am not the investigator".

Another defence lawyer Elijah Siatwaambo asked the witness to confirm that he knows nothing about allegations that Nundwe is accused of r**e, to which he said “That's correct”

Trial continues next month, February 26.

AS of November last year, the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) owed more than K600 million to accredited health facilities.

https://www.facebook.com/100064560977290/posts/1046076107554412/

The challenges faced by the insurance scheme threaten its ability to provide proper healthcare services to members of the public.

For this reason, stakeholders have recommended a revision of NHIMA’s contribution structure to help revive it.

Stakeholders fear that its collapse will leave millions of citizens without affordable healthcare options, undermining the nation’s progress toward universal health coverage.

Making submissions before the National Assembly's Committee on Health, Community Development and Social Services, Centre for Reproductive Health and Education executive director, Amos Mwale, emphasised NHIMA’s importance in ensuring access to quality healthcare for all Zambians.

He commended the government’s establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as a bold step toward addressing healthcare inequities.

"NHIMA’s success depends on sustainable funding and effective management to deliver on its promises," he said.

During the submissions, stakeholders also raised concerns about NHIMA’s inability to adequately register and support Zambia’s most vulnerable populations, particularly those in the informal sector.

They noted that the strategies used to include the poor and marginalised are insufficient, leaving many without access to critical healthcare services.

However, NHIMA Director General Michael Njapau has assured the public that the authority is not insolvent but admitted that financial constraints are limiting its capacity to deliver effective services.
