Our base for exploring the Rioja region was the lovely Camping de Haro, bookable through the Caravan and Motorhome Club 😍

The site itself is fantastic, with hedge-lined pitches plenty big enough for our car, caravan and ramps, 6amp electric hook-up, a lively restaurant/bar, and a small-but-functional (and very clean!) accessible toilet and shower facility…

But it’s also in a fantastic location—Especially if you like wine—as you can walk right into the centre of Haro, which is beautiful, and a wine lovers paradise 🍷

What a beautiful town! 😍

Today we took a little self-guided walking tour of Haro — known as the capital of the Rioja wine region. And what we found was a lively atmosphere, stunning architecture, sunshine, olive trees, and soooo many bodegas (wineries).

We stopped for a drink at C.V.N.E, before wandering through the square and up the hill to the viewpoint over the valley.

Spain… We are absolutely loving you 💗

Well… this is the first accessibility disaster we’ve encountered in a long time 😅

Today’s plan was to visit the Salt Valley of Añana — A unique Spanish salt works with a fascinating history.

We’d checked the opening times, planned the route, and of course researched accessibility. Everything was looking good!

The one thing we failed to spot on their website, is that the adapted tours MUST be booked in advance.

Had we done this, we’d have gotten a guided tour along the wheelchair accessible paths throughout.

But we didn’t. So the most we could do was enjoy the view from the top 😆

I must admit that it was a bit disheartening to watch other, able-bodied people, turning up unannounced for their tour at the same time that we were being turned away, but that’s life sometimes.

It was still really cool to see it, if only from a distance, and we learnt a valuable lesson! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♂️

We’ve landed here in the stunning La Rioja region, world-famous for its wine, so where better to start than the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture?! 🍷

This was such an interesting place to visit, and we learnt so much — From the 8000 year history of wine in this region, to the way it’s made, bottled and corked. And of course we enjoyed a little sample before picking up a case to take home 😋

♿️ Accessibility: Fantastic! Disabled parking outside the entrance, and the entire museum is accessible to wheelchair users via a series of long, smooth ramps. They even have tactile signage for people with visual impairments.

We made it! 🇪🇸

Our first overnight crossing with Brittany Ferries was a resounding success, and we’ve arrived safe and sound in Spain.

We couldn’t believe how big the Pont-Aven ship is — It’s like a mini cruise! With so much to see and do, including restaurants, bars, cinemas, a swimming pool, live music, games arcade, bingo, talks from a marine biologist, and more.

AND WE SAW DOLPHINS 🐬😍
Memories have already been made, before we’d even stepped foot in the country.

♿️ Accessibility onboard: We were really impressed from start to finish!
The crew parked us in a suitable position on the car deck, then from there, getting around the ship in a wheelchair was easy. They even pre-arranged an es**rt to take us back down to our car ahead of the crowds when disembarking.
Onboard there weren’t many places I couldn’t access. And our wheelchair accessible cabin was spacious and comfortable, with an automatic door opener (from the inside), a humongous porthole window, and an en-suite wet room that included a shower seat, roll under sink and grab handles.

Guys… Our Spanish trip has officially begun! 😁

After a convenient stopover at Stover Caravan and Motorhome Club site, we’ve made it to the Plymouth port to catch the ferry to Santander 🛳️

It’s a 21 hour crossing, so we’ve got our overnight bag packed and we’re looking forward to checking out our accessible cabin and the onboard facilities.

It’s our first time doing this crossing, so we’re a little apprehensive but VERY excited — Fingers crossed everything is smooth sailing (literally and figuratively 😅)

We had SUCH fun discovering some of the gems Worcestershire has to offer 🥰
During our flying visit, we packed in…

🌳 A 2.5km wheelchair-friendly walk in the Malvern Hills, to the highest point in the county — The Worcestershire Beacon.
From Upper Beacon Road Car Park, the path was mostly tarmac, with a few bumpy sections and lots of benches. It’s a continuous fairly-steep incline, which my chair managed fine, but you can also hire all-terrain scooters from the nearby Cafe H2O.
And the views?… STUNNING the whole way 😍

🛏️ Then we checked into The Malvern Spa hotel, for some R&R. We’ve never been to a spa before, but WOW! What a relaxing and romantic setting — We quickly settled into our spacious “Mixed Ability” room before enjoying the plethora of facilities and getting dressed up for a date in the restaurant.
Although we don’t need it ourselves, it would’ve been nice to see a lift in the pool for those who do (they welcomed this feedback). However, we loved how the spa was all on one level and really easy to navigate in a wheelchair, and there was a great accessible shower/changing room, and height-adjustable massage tables to make transfers easier.
It was a real taste of luxury and we will certainly be back 💗

🦁 The following day (after a delicious breakfast in bed 😋) we headed to West Midlands Safari Park for more fun.
On the Safari Drive, we couldn’t believe how close we got to the animals—then we saw even more in the Safari Walk!
With a mixture of tarmac, boardwalk and pressed gravel paths, getting around in my wheelchair was easy. There’s also mobility scooter hire available, plenty of Blue Badge parking, and a fantastic Changing Places toilet facility, complete with a hoist and full-sized changing bench 🤩

It was the perfect end to a fun-filled, accessible trip!
