We recognized a market friction and created an appropriate lubricant (product/service) to fix it.

I was in Tekedia Institute Mini-MBA programme cohort 11 when Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe made this post (in the feature image).

This post birthed an idea for my capstone research project.

That is how Vengel Fellows was born.

Vengel Fellows has democratized VC investing: You don't need to be a high net-worth individual to invest in this exclusive highly profitable asset class.

Yes, you can still be buying diapers like me and be investing at the same time to own a piece of the global economy.

Vengel Fellows lets you join leading VC's like Prof. at Tekedia Capital to fund the next wave of category-king start-ups.

Now you can join fellow angel syndicates to get access to exclusive start-up funding rounds. Invest deal-by-deal in innovative start-ups.

We’re giving more Africans the opportunity to participate in the private equity and venture capital economy; and more start-ups the resources they need to advance individuals and communities, and change the world.

Many years ago when I made it into America, I sought insights on how to quickly get into the American financial system, understanding that there was no village to relocate to, if one cannot pay the bills (in Nigeria, if you become homeless in the city, you can move to your village!). I went to the foreign students office; they referred me to a woman, Maureen, in the account services.

Maureen gave me a small book on building credits, and told me three things:

-You must build credit in America.

-To do that, since you just arrived from Nigeria, call your bank or a credit card company, and ask for a prepaid credit card.

-Where possible, buy everything with that card, and at the end of the month, pay things off. Do not carry a balance!

I did not have enough but I did send Chase $200, and they sent me a prepaid credit card. I did as she instructed; I picked an extra student job in the farm (Instrumentation Engineer, managing sensors and electronics in the university farm which covered hectares of land. Was an IT guy in Lagos). Within 3 months, Chase returned the deposit, and increased the card to $500. Then $1000, $5000, $20000, etc.

Over the years, I have had a near-perfect credit score: hovering around 820-845 out of possible 850 with today at 828 (cyclical, by month end, it will hit ~840 due to reporting and payment cycles). And that has saved me tons of money because every bank considers me a low-risk borrower.

But there was something missing in what Maureen said: the rent I paid as a student was not used to model that credit. So, when Canada-based Binta knocked on the integration of that into credit reporting, I felt that it was a powerful business model. We invested in them last year, and today, I am happy to report that Tekedia Capital is making further investments.

Binta brings another layer to this: they will port your data from your native home country to North America so that unlike that barren record I began with, you do not begin from ground zero. They report all to Equifax.

Binta: go and support immigrants and new arrivals from around the world and give them financial support. Tekedia Capital is proud to support your mission.

In 1997 one dollar was equal to about N22 official exchange rate, and about N100 in black market rate.

Let's use the black market rate:

$1 = N100 (1997)

That means that in 1997, $100 was about N10,000

If you were born in 1997, you're age mates with Amazon, the e-commerce powerhouse.

Now, here is where I am going...

If your parents had invested just N10,000 ($100) immediately after Amazon's Initial Public Offering (IPO) back in 1997 for you, that single investment would be worth over N300m today.

I mean >Three Hundred Million Naira...
..from doing absolutely nothing, apart from gathering the donations from family and friends during your naming ceremony and doing a one time investment of about N10,000 some 24 years ago.

For you to verify these figures, you have to understand that Amazon started trading with about $18; the concept of compound interest, and stock splits.

Amazon has done four stock splits within the period in review.
(I will not go into that details here in order to keep this post short and sweet. If you need the details of this kind of growth, reach out to me privately.)

This is just one case of so many scenarios.

I don't even want to talk about those who invested in Amazon as a start-up.

However, this post is not meant for you to go and ask your parents, "Daddy, Mummy...but why? Whyyyy? Where were you?"

You that is reading this now, where are you? Shebi you hear and read me talk about buying your future, owning a piece of the economy, creating your personal economy via investing in the financial markets everyday and you think it's just another Facebook post?

No. It is about your future and that of your kids.

What will you tell your own children? What excuse will you give to them exactly?

I can excuse your parents. Access to information, knowledge and tools were not as liberal and ubiquitous as it is today.

Some of you will think 20 years is too long to wait to make that kind of money from a N10,000 one time investment.

You're looking for betting sites and Telegram 'investment' groups to join and 'hammer'. I don't have your strength.

To you young parents, when you have your baby plant a symbolic tree! When you get married, plant a symbolic tree! When you celebrate anniversaries, plant a symbolic tree.

A symbolic tree is making that investment in a growth and futuristic company.

The amount you invest and when you invest is not as important as the time you stay right with that investment.

The best time to ever start investing was when you were born. The next best time was yesterday. The third best time is right this moment.

You love Agriculture too much. Your dream and purpose in life is to feed the world.

But the issue is you don't yet have the capital to start your own farm or AgroTech company.

You are looking for where to 'invest' in agro-tech companies.

Let me tell you a secret.

The right or best way to expose your funds to agriculture investment is to buy the stocks of companies that are into agriculture.

Example: Okomu Oil and Presco

They are listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

This way, you do not just 'lend" someone money to run his private business. But you become a co-owner of the business.

The amazing thing is that with companies like this you won real estate too. Okomu controls over 19,000 hectares of land, while Presco holds a plantation size of over 39,000 hectres.

You share in the yearly palliative they give out to shareholders ( DIVIDENDS).

You enjoy asset value growth too.

You also have access to their books and can attend Annual General Meetings and cast your vote concerning corporate decisions.

You don't need millions to do this. All you need is knowledge and a percentage of your salary.

Buy income today. Earn your future.

(The companies mentioned here are not investment advice. This is just for educational purpose.)

The Christening

Somewhere in Bayelsa, there lived a retiree named Mr. Labros, who had spent his entire life working hard, with dreams of one day receiving his severance benefits from the government.

He was finally looking forward to enjoying his golden years, albeit a bit late, when his much younger wife announced she was pregnant. The whole town buzzed with excitement for the impending arrival of their child, who would symbolize years of labour and hope.

At last, the baby girl was born, and joy spread like wildfire through the Labros household.

The neighbours came to celebrate, not just the birth, but also the long-awaited arrival of Mr. Labros’ pension checque, which, as luck would have it, arrived just in time for the baby’s arrival.

On the day of the christening, the small church overflowed with curious onlookers, eager to hear the name of the baby.

With a solemn air, the father handed a note to the pastor, who read it aloud to the congregation.

"Friends and family," the pastor began, "we are here to christen this beautiful baby girl. Her name is... Pension."

The congregation's initial shock gave way to laughter and whispered jokes.

The pastor, keeping a straight face, continued,

"Little Pension is named in honour of her father's lifelong wait for his gratuity. After decades of hard work, Mr. Labros finally received his due, just as his daughter was born. A fitting tribute, don’t you think?"

He blessed the child and offered prayers for the family.

Though, many in the audience couldn't help but chuckle. They knew all too well the satire of the situation:

Mr. Labros had spent his entire life working for a pension that barely came in time to meet his new-born.

The real joke, many mused, was on the system and mindset that encouraged such dependence.

The story of Pension is a reminder to the young and old alike.

Instead of waiting a lifetime for a pension cheque, perhaps it would be wiser to invest and build wealth during your working years.

After all, creating a personal pension portfolio and a robust family economy might be the real key to retiring wealthy and passing on prosperity to your children.

Baby Pension Labros' story would inspire a new generation to think beyond the traditional pension scheme, aiming instead for true financial independence.

A Message of Hope for Retirees

The mistake most employees make is to work all their lives and then attempt to 'retire into business.'

At this point, the wind aimlessly sways them like a feather. They squander their hard-earned gratuities and pensions, chasing shiny business ventures that inevitably lead to disappointment.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

You do not retire into business. You build a business to plan and prepare for your retirement.

Retirement is not the time to stumble blindly into business; it's the time to prune your existing business that paves the way for a secure future.

Imagine this: While you're still young and actively employed, you can lay the foundation for something extraordinary.

Even if you're unsure of what to build, fear not. You can align
yourself with the brightest minds in entrepreneurship by partnering with visionaries who have already constructed their empires.

Think of your investment portfolio as your very own business
—a business that:

(a.) Has the power to shape your retirement.

(b.) Can generate regular passive income to take care of you throughout your retirement days.

(c.) You can pass on to your children and children's children, many generations long after you're gone.

It has been scientifically proven that if you invest 15% of your salary or business profits consistently for 5 years, then you would have 2 years of free salary to live on (barring inflation and currency devaluation to the contrary).

For all the paralysis in the land, Nigeria is having one of its finest Cambrian moments on the formation of enduring companies.

The last time we were this bold, on entrepreneurial capitalism, was in the early 1990s when some of Nigeria’s current leading banks were established.

The 1990s gave us the new generation of banks. The 2000s brought voice telephony. The 2010s ushered mobile internet.

The 2020s would deliver the era of application utility across industry sectors and market territories.

We will see technology systems change the ordinance of markets by fixing frictions. From education to healthcare, from financial services to logistics, and beyond, it would be exciting.

The empires of the future are being built – get ready, Nigeria is a promise!

From next week, Tekedia Capital Syndicate will be writing cheques to about 8 companies.

Sure, in this cycle of our syndicate, we will be investing in Congo DRC, Canada, USA, Togo and of course Nigeria! It’s time to !

It is Not About the Exchange Rate. It is All About Patriotism.

I wrote this piece below in 2022. I think it is evergreen. So, I thought to share it verbatim for greater introspection.

The Hope-Despair Index (HDI)

Recently, a friend visited Nigeria from his base abroad.

We met and talked at length about his career and exploits in his place of work.

The dude is doing well in the Benjamins. But he told me something surprising:

"I keep most of my money in my Naira account."

I was surprised.

I asked him, "What happened to your domiciliary (Dom) account? Why keep your money in Naira when our economy is suffering from kwashiorkor and the naira dipping against the dollar steadily weekly?

The exchange rate was about N500 when we had this conversation.

Today, it is N610. And the bottom is not in sight.

He casually told me that he just likes his money kept in Naira. I was just looking at him like, 'are you okay?'

Wasn't going to take that as an answer. So, I went on...

"But, don't you realize that you can simply be earning the FOREX profits with the NGN/USD pair on your money in your Dom without lifting a finger? That's what people who trade Forex seek."

He said he knew about that.

And went on to analyze that even with the exchange rate in his favour as one who earns in dollars and uses the funds to execute some projects back home in naira, it would still cost him about six times (6X) the amount he used to do some projects about 3 years ago if he was.to embark on the same project now.

"Materials are too expensive now. So, I don't really care about the Forex gains. A lot of people are suffering in this country too much. But your fuel pump rice is cheap, though."

He schooled me on why he thought our fuel pump price is cheap. That is by the way.

The dude is very comfortable and he couldn't be bothered with chasing the exchange rate. Oh, nice.

However, recently Peter Obi (PO), the Labour Party presidential candidate gave a story in one of his speeches that made me remember this conversation with my friend.

PO, said his teacher in one of the courses he did had ask him which he preferred between the N1000 and $100 bills they were looking at.

He told his teacher that he preferred the $100 bill.

When asked why he chose another country's currency over his, he replied that it was because of the exchange rate advantage.

So, his teacher went on to cite first world countries whose citizens keep their money in their local currency despite being weaker against the USD.

"You don't have faith in your currency. And by extension, your country and economy. It is not about the exchange rate," the teacher said.

How true!

We no reach 10 for dis country wey get faith for the naira. My friend is one of about the 9 people or thereabout.

We are blaring, 📢 📢

"The naira is not smiling. It is N610/$ today. Earn in dollars. Keep your money in dollars. Save in USDT crypto. Invest in US markets..." 📢

Even the delegates of the popular political parties are bribed in dollars cash. Not naira.

That 'exchange rate' is the polar star that measures our faith or hopelessness in the currency and the country.

Today our hope-despair index is at 610 basis points. How bad can it get?

A line on the National Anthem says;

"To serve our fatherland With love and strength and faith."
Without this faith, there is no patriotism.

There is more to patriotism than reciting the national pledge at events or freezing when the national anthem is being played.

When next you want to measure your/our level of patriotism in this country, simply Google, Naira-Dollar Black Market Rate.

The deeper our despair, the dipper the naira.

Think about this as we prepare to go to the polls again.

Don't trade stocks.
Go and trade Crypto.
Use your profits to buy and own businesses.

The Corporate Affairs Commission has urged social media content creators, Instagram users, and TikTok users with large followers to register their businesses with the commission in accordance with the Company and Allied Matters Act 2020.

"If you are a content creator on the internet and you have a large followership and you are gaining or making money from it, you must register and that’s the provision of the law.

And we are all out to enforce the provision of the law with its penalties.”

Most people have the fear that if they register their business, the tax man would start going after them.

Well, note that only businesses that make an annual profit of N25m and above are required by FIRS to pay tax.

And, as for annual returns for registered businesses, it is a little amount paid annually to the CAC by every registered entity. It only becomes burdensome when you default for years and the money piles up (plus the penalty for defaulting for each year).

Let us help you register your business name, company, church, mosque, NGO, Association, club, group of companies, etc.

Click on the link in the comments section to chat with us now let's help you file your annual returns.

Most people rather spend 1000X more to solve a problem they created rather than avoid the problem in the first place.

Don't allow the weight of the law to descend on you.

If your registered organization: business, company, school or church is owing CAC annual returns, make sure to clear it off now.

And, ignorance is not an excuse before the law.
