Henrietta Lacks had cells stolen from her body which is the basis of so many modern medical advancement including mRna vaccines. Her family was never compensated at all. Only recently did a court decision against Thermo Fisher award her family after it had been found they continued using the cells after being ordered to stop.
Companies would rather steal and illegally profit than simply compensate properly
@margari_aziza talks about the pervasive attitude among people that Black women are somehow magic for being able to endure many of the hardships and barriers thrust upon them. And how this attitude is used as a justification for continued oppression and exploitation.
What does this have to do with science? So much of the advancement of one of the most technologically advanced civilization on Earth is built largely on the exploitation of labor and people. Black people in particular. The immortal HeLa cells harvested from Henrietta Lacks has produced trillions of dollars in revenue for the medical industry and saved countless lives and yet this woman remains largely unknown.
Part of the insidious power of empire and neocolonialism is it's ability to instill a sense of self loathing. That by "accident of birth" you are less than. Less deserving of movement, healthcare, education, opportunity. We say we resist and want to dismantle it but cosign it with our very existences. And it continues unabated because we are not only not vociferous enough in our desire to dismantle it, we shrug meekly and make ourselves complicit for a little bit of privilege and adjacency.
